Defense Ruins Old-Timer's Day
![]() A day featuring nearly 6 hours of baseball at the stadium came to an unfortuitous end in the bottom of the 13th after Miguel Cairo’s errors allowed the Angels to break a 1–1 tie in the top of the inning. Cairo tried to make amends by singling, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, but Melky Cabrera and Derek Jeter couldn’t bring him home. The Yanks fell 2–1, and honestly, they deserved to lose. You can’t make 5 errors and expect to win. A monstrous effort from Roger Clemens was wasted, but you have to tip your cap to John Lackey, who matched Clemens pitch for pitch. The Yanks are 2 games under .500, and look to win the series tomorrow when Chien-Ming Wang faces Ervin Santana. Player of the Game: Roger Clemens: 8 IP, 1 earned, 5 hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks.
