The streak is alive!!!! There were some tense moments in the Yankees’ 5–4, extra-inning win over the Pirates tonight, but all’s well that ends well.
Pettitte pitched much better than his final line would indicate (8 IP, 4 earned, 9 hits, 1 BB, and 5 Ks). Andy had two outs in the top of the seventh in a 2–2 game, with a man on first, and Chris Duffy at the plate when Melky badly, horribly, terribly mis-played a line-drive off the bat of Chris Duffy with two outs. Duffy wound up with an inside-the-park bomb, and Pettitte found himself in a 4–2 hole.
The Yanks bounced back with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh on singles from Jeter and Posada. Pettitte came out for the eighth, which was a surprise, but he put a zero on the board. Mo two scoreless, striking out three, and giving the Yanks a chance to mount the game-winning rally in the bottom of the tenth.
Cano just missed a walk-off bomb leading off the tenth. Melky bunted him over to third, Cairo hit a dribbler which Freddy Sanchez played into a hit. Cairo stole second, Damon was intentionally walked, setting the scene for Derek Jeter. Bases loaded, bottom of the tenth, one out. Jeter hit a dribbler to second, Freddy Sanchez tried to barehand the ball and get Cano at the plate, but couldn’t make the play. Yankees win! Jeter got jammed badly on the play, and got very lucky that it was hit as softly as it was, in the spot that it was. As the saying goes, “you make your own luck.”
Big win. That’s four straight, and 7 out of 9. Detroit lost to the Mets. Boston is leading Arizona 4–1 in the top of the fourth. If that score holds up the Yanks will remain 10.5 games back in the East, and move to within 5.5 games of the Wild Card.
If you’re at the stadium tomorrow for Rocket’s ‘07 debut, keep your eyes open for a guy with a shaved head, soiled Giambi t-shirt and green mesh shorts. I’ll be in Main Box 284, stop by and say hi to the Mrs. and I. My recap will come late night tomorrow. Let’s go Yanks!
Player of the Game: Mariano Rivera, 2 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 1 BB, 3 Ks.

Wait a minute, Joe Torre is managing a game?!? Key bunts, key stolen bases, playing small ball... wow. I'm a huge Torre fan, but if there's one thing that has bothered me over the past 5 years, it has been that at some point Torre gave up his "NL style" of creating runs, and just sat there waiting for his team to hit homers.
Need I bring up that he could manufacture a run in Games 4 and 5 against Boston in 2004, even though the opportunities were there? Last year in the playoffs against the Angels?
Now, if he's actually managing again - maybe it's just because it was an interleague game, or maybe he has realized that his team has only one slugger on it right now - A-Rod - but if he's managing for real again... I have to say the rest of the AL has to be on notice. Joe Torre might be playing for keeps.
The Mets beat Detroit, so the Yankees are now 5.5 games out of the wild card, a big change from about two weeks ago (when they were like 9 games behind the Tigers)....
You might be onto something with the Giambi shirt and shorts....
SML,
You know what's changed? Melky is in the lineup, and playing like he was last year. They played exactly like this when Matsui and Sheff were on the DL last year. His youth and energy up everyone's level of play. More on this in my recap of today's game.
JJ,
The shirt was in the stadium today, the Pirates never had a shot.
