A trade that’s been rumored for weeks has finally come to pass, and I’m sad to say, Scott Proctor is no longer a Yankee. The Bombers have pulled the trigger on a deal to send the Doctor to LA for Wilson Betemit.
Betemit is a young utility guy with pop in his bat and successful pinch-hitting experience. Buster Olney is saying he’s also an insurance policy at third in case A-Rod walks after the season. I don’t buy that, but who knows.
As Mike from Green Pinstripes said in an e-mail to me minutes ago, “The Yanks traded the wrong guy.” This deal would have me smiling if it was Farnsworth leaving town. Instead, it leaves me with mixed feelings. On one hand, this clears a spot in the bullpen for Joba. On the other hand, Farnsworth is still in the pen, and that is definitely not a good thing.
Buster Olney is also saying the Yanks have reconsidered trading Farnsworth to Detroit because the Yanks may be chasing Detroit for the Wild Card. To me, this is a perfect reason to trade Four-Eyes to the Tigers. He can go blow games for them. Seems like a win-win to me.
In other rumors, it looks like the odds of the Yankees getting Gagne are shrinking by the minute. Teams interested include the Red Sox, Mets, Brewers and possibly the Cubs. I can only hope that one of those teams pays way too much and saves the Yanks from making a huge mistake.
The addition of Betemit probably means Shelley Duncan’s days in the bigs are probably numbered. In case you forgot who Shelley Duncan is, he’s the kid who hit three HRs in his first three games, and has gotten exactly 8 at-bats in the 8 games since.
