The Daily News is reporting that the Yanks are interested in Joel Pineiro who became a free agent when the Mariners didn't tender him an offer by Tuesday. Pineiro's history of elbow and shoulder problems, 58-55 career record and 6.36 ERA last year should make him an ideal candidate to compete for a spot on the roster, maybe even in the rotation.
Not only are his numbers stellar, but he'll probably be cheap, especially when Gil Meche, his former teammate, just signed a $55M deal for five years. Honestly, when is this madness going to stop?
For some reason, after a couple years of reasonable salaries, this offseason the owners have gone mad again. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out why. In the past, Steinbrenner has been at least partially to blame, but this year I think it all comes down the Cubs setting the atmosphere. They signed Soriano for way too much, followed that up with a couple more bonehead moves (Lilly and Marquis), and now everyone else is looking at what's left and grasping at straws.
The Yanks need to take a step back and realize they don't need to join in the fray. They already overspent for Pettitte, assuming he passes his physical. Let's stop the bleeding there. If this is the roster you're going into the season with, so be it. No one in the AL East got better. In fact, I'd say the Sox got worse, and will continue on that path until the season starts. The only free agent out there who could possibly make a difference is Zito, and I don't think he's worth the $100M over six years that Texas has reportedly offered him. This is the winter to let the other teams make the bad moves, so let them do it George.
