, all the time

The Moose had another atrocious first inning, thanks mostly to shoddy defense, and the Yanks found themselves in a quick 4-1 hole. As we've noted before here, they Yanks had only come back from one deficit of more than 2 runs this season coming into the game. Tonight would be the second.

It took 16 hits to squeak out 6 runs, but the Yanks were able to get to the 8th with a 2-run cushion, enough to withstand the obligatory solo bomb off Farnsworth, and Mo came in for the save. Mussina cruised through his final five innings of work, and shocked everyone by coming out to pitch the sixth and extend himself beyond 100 pitches. It was probably needed, and Girardi had Veras warming the whole inning, so I'm going to say it was a good call by Joey Jr.

This was my first look at the upstart Twins and a couple of things struck me. First, why has Joe Mauer's power regressed over the years? He's a big guy, he should be hitting bombs, at least a couple. He has zero on the year. That's not good for a #3 hitter. Second, Carlos Gomez is atrocious in center field. Yes, he's got a ton of speed and he gets to a lot of balls that other center fielders would not, but his angle, or lack thereof, to balls in the gap is just silly. Every ball hit out there he takes a direct line to. Bobby Abreu wouldn't have had either of his triples tonight if Gomez knew how to play the position.

The Wanger vs. Bonser tomorrow night for the second of four in the series.

Player of The Game: Melky. 3 for 4, 2 RBI. His only out was a seed hit right at the second baseman for a double play.
Team Record: 27-27, .500 again.
