Ken Rosenthal just reported on Fox that A-Rod will opt out of the final three years of his contract. The diminutive sideline reporter was quoting evil incarnate/super agent Scott Boras (pictured at right) as saying A-Rod made the decision today because he's unsure of the direction the Yanks are headed in.
There are two ways to read this:
1. A-Rod and Boras are full of sh!t. The Yankees were planning on meeting with them in the coming days to discuss exactly where the organization was headed, and tacking years onto his current deal.
2. This is a ploy by Boras to squeeze more money out of the Bombers. Everyone and their mother has heard the Yankees won't negotiate with him if he opts out. By stating publicly that he will opt out (but not actually doing it, yet) Boras is in effect turning the heat up on the Yankees to make their extension offer a pretty sweet one.
Either way, it's a pretty class-less move to announce it before the Yankees even had a chance to sit down with the guy and discuss an extension. Not to mention the fact that it was announced during game 4 of the World Series. Anyway, if it actually happens, I'll have my thoughts in depth, for now, I'm operating as if this is nothing more than an opportunistic piece of crap agent trying to gain some leverage.
