With more and more rumors hitting the Web, including this one about Adam Dunn
(who I'd like to see in pinstripes), I decided to take a closer look at the Yankees stats to see if there was something that I'd overlooked.
We've seen the Yanks floated as possible suitors for the 20 lefty relievers believed to be available. While getting a lefty specialist would be nice, I guess, it's really not necessary.
The way the pen is built right now, only 5 guys will throw a pitch in a close game, Mariano Rivera, David Robertson, Edwar Ramirez, Jose Veras and Kyle Farnsworth. Look at the combined stat line for those guys...
9 wins, 6 losses, 18 holds, 26 saves
168.2 innings, 119 hits, 50 walks, 45 earned runs, 183 strike outs2.40 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 9.76 K/9
Those are the total numbers on the season for these five guys, and it doesn't even include the work Joba did in the pen before moving to the rotation. This bullpen is absolutely the strength of this team right now. The Yanks need a bat, pure and simple. A distant second on their wish list is someone to replace Rasner in the rotation. Getting an arm for the pen shouldn't even be discussed, as far as I'm concerned.
