, all the time

The meetings haven't even started yet, but we've got our first bit of news from Tennessee. I'll update this post throughout the day with any/all Yankee rumors/innuendo, so check back early and often. Keep in mind, the rumors are going to be coming fast and furious. Any actual transactions will get a post of their own. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments:
  • La Velle E. Neal III (MLBTR) - It seems as though Hank has ruffled some feathers in Minnesota with this statement: "“Because as much as I want Santana, and you can make that clear — for his sake, to know that I do want him — but the fact is that I’m not going to play the game,'’ Steinbrenner said." The word tampering is being muttered. Personally, I love it. It's like blinking in Morse code "We'll throw a boatload of money at you after this season, just veto any trade." [Dec. 3, 12:25 p.m.]
  • Beaver County Times & Allegheny Times (MLBTR) - Yanks show interest in Damaso Marte. He's a hard-throwing lefty reliever. His numbers from last year: 45.1 innings, 51Ks, 32 hits, 18 walks, 2.38 ERA, 1.103 WHIP. He looked dominating when I saw him pitch, I say go for it. [Dec. 3, 11:15 a.m.]
  • Jayson Stark - Billy Beane is smoking crack. He says he wants two of the Big Three (Joba, Hughes, Kennedy) for Dan Haren. Probably only a starting point, but still, thats crazy talk. I think this is a stupid move by Beane. He could effectively usurp Minnesota and land a top prospect or two with a reasonable asking price for Haren while the Yanks and Sox are dueling it out over Johan.  [Dec. 3, 11:15 a.m.]
  • Ken Rosenthal (MLB Trade Rumors) - The Yanks are showing some interest in Octavio Dotel (so do the Mets). Bullpen help is definitely needed, but I'm not sure Dotel exactly fits the bill. [Dec. 3, 2:47 a.m.]
  • From the Providence Journal (River Ave Blues, via Alex K, from NY, again) - Santana only wants to go to the Yanks or the Sox. He'll veto a trade anywhere else. So if the Sox pull off a deal for say, Ben Sheets, then the Yanks are instantly bidding against themselves. This is actually good news, depending on what happens in the next couple of days. The Twins lose every last shred of leverage if one of the teams drops out of the running, and probably wind up taking pennies on the dollar or just keeping him. I'm 100% convinced that this price has been driven more by "Don't let the other guy get him," economics than pure baseball and money logic. [Dec. 3, 1:24 a.m.]
  • From Baseball Prospectus (hat tip to Alex K, from NY) - The current Yankee offer is apparently not enough for the Twins. They want three major-league ready prospects for Johan. This means the Sox offer also falls short. BP says this may open the door for the Mariners to step in. I hope they do. I wonder if the Twins consider Alberto Gonzalez (the Yanks AAA short stop) major-league ready. His glove probably is. [Dec. 3, 12:55 a.m.]
