The official word, directly from Michael Kay's mouth is a pulled oblique muscle for the kid.
This came out of the blue, amid discussion of sending Hughes back to the minors to right the ship. It's unclear who the Yanks will insert into the rotation, probably either Darrell Rasner or Kei Igawa.
