David Aldridge has some info I find encouraging and some analysis I find sorely lacking on a workout the Sixers have scheduled.
The news is that the Sixers have apparently scheduled a workout for about a week prior to the draft. The invitees are Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins. Before we go any further, I'm thrilled they're bringing these guys in together. I'd give anything to be a fly on the wall to see them go one-on-one. The best offensive big in the draft vs. the guy who I think will be the best defensive big. A head-to-head competition, possibly with millions of dollars on the line. I can't think of a better way to get to the heart of Favors' alleged passivity. It'll also be interesting to see if Cousins gets rid of some of the lard between now and then.
These guys played against each other in high school, and from what I've heard, Favors absolutely dominated Cousins.
Like I said prior to the jump, the news is very good. Even if they're 99.9999% sure they're taking Evan Turner at number two, it would be gross negligence to not even work these guys out. Aldridge's logic, however, is sensationalist at best. First, the entire premise of his report is that the Sixers may not like Turner, and this workout shows that they're looking to use the pick on someone else. To try to support that faulty logic, he then says there's no way these guys would agree to work out for the Sixers unless they got a nod or wink that the Sixers were going to pick one of them. It's just silly. They're projected to be the numbers three and four picks on most mock drafts. They should be falling all over themselves to work out for either the Wizards or the Sixers in the hopes that they could move up. The Sixers aren't sitting in the mid lottery trying to get a top-tier player to work out for them here, they're sitting pretty and honestly, they should be able to get anyone they want in for a workout.
Aldridge is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill here. He's better than that.
