Jodie Meeks: Ballboy? Waste of a 2010 second round pick? Gunner extraordinaire? Viable rotational player? My feelings after the jump, yours in the comments.
The best thing I can say with any confidence about Jodie Meeks is I'm glad we're going to have the entire 2010-2011 season to better evaluate him. He's on a minimum contract for the upcoming season, he'll (hopefully) have a real coach, so before we have to make any kind of decision on signing him to a real contract we'll know if he can legitimately shoot, if he can do anything else on the floor and whether his defensive effort will translate into effective defense.
My gut feeling is Jodie is cut from the Willie Green cloth. A marginal pro. But I've been wrong before. He seems like a streaky shooter without a pure shot, but his hot streaks looked very hot toward the end of the season. He's going to need to do more than shoot every time he touches the ball, that goes without saying. My best guess: He's probably here for the remainder of his contract and then maybe brought back on another minimum contract deal. He's maybe the 8th or 9th man in the rotation and provides a little bit of scoring punch when his shot is falling, not much more.
The contract is the good news, if you're an optimist. If you're a pessimist, pay close attention when pick number 36 comes up in the draft, because that's what the Sixers gave up for him. More players than usual seem to be declaring for the draft, if someone falls into that area, I know I'll be kicking myself.
