Over the next couple of weeks I thought we'd take a quick look at each player on the roster, mainly to gauge how the fans feel about him going forward. Let's start with a guy who I go back and forth over, Lou Williams.
This series is not going to be stat-intensive, it's more about gut feelings.
Lou is an interesting case, because I spent most of the season loathing his play on the floor. The matador defense, the terrible decision making on the break, the dribbling the air out of the ball when he was supposed to be running the point. When Lou isn't attacking, and I mean mercilessly attacking the hoop, he just doesn't do anything for me on the floor.
On the other hand, he seriously cut down his turnovers (even though he rarely creates scoring opportunities for others), and he really can take over a game with his scoring ability when he's in attack mode. Most importantly, unlike Willie Green, when Lou goes off he picks up the whole team. By this, I mean he isn't just hitting contested 20 footers, his effort spills over to the defensive end, he puts a ton of fouls on the other team and he can seriously turn a game around. He's shown that he can do this type of work in the fourth quarter, and that's a nice quality to have in a bench guy.
So here's the question, you wear the GM hat. What would you do with Lou?
He's owed $15.5M over the next three seasons.
Personally, I do believe Lou can play a role on the team going forward, but I don't believe it's going to be a big enough role to warrant that contract, and I do think it's a role you can fill with a cheaper player, at nearly the same level (possibly Jodie Meeks). I'm not sure I'd assume a "we just need to get rid of this guy," approach to trading him, but at the same time, I'd listen to all offers.
Thoughts in the comments, as usual.
