It took me longer than most to admit that Mo Cheeks is just a bad coach. All the evidence was there, but he's Mo and he was a big part of the Sixers last championship team so I admit it, I had blinders on. That being said, after tonight's game I am 100% certain that Mo Cheeks needs to remain this team's coach for the rest of the season. Why, you might ask? Because if the Sixers had a good coach, games like tonight's 103-98 loss to the Spurs would be wins. And every last loss counts for the Sixers this season.
I had this game chalked up as a loss from the get-go, but Sean Elliott's idiotic commentary for the Spurs made me really want them to sneak away with a win, and they should have. Andre Iguodala took this game over in the second half, scoring 19 of his 27 points after the break. He was a man possessed, driving to the hole, hitting jumpers and grabbing rebounds. Cheeks did his usual job of mismanaging timeouts to short-circuit Sixers' runs and sitting hot players at the absolute wrong times. Kevin Ollie played the game of his life, going 9-11 from the field for 19 points, a career high. Of course, this means that Cheeks sat him for the bulk of the fourth quarter.
On a lighter note, I saw Greg Oden play a full game for the first time today when Ohio State massacred Cincinnati. If Oden comes out in the draft this year, the Sixers absolutely must get him. He looked bored at times, but he's big, he's fast and he's talented. He's the kind of guy you can build a franchise around, think Dwight Howard, but bigger.
Player of the game: It would've been Kevin Ollie if he'd seen the court in the fourth quarter, but I have to give it to Iguodala. He tied his career high with 27 points and added 7 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block. I just hope the injury he sustained driving to the hole in the fourth quarter is nothing major. He's the only reason to watch this team at this point.
