Are the Suns For Real?

OK, it looks like this thing is working. If it goes down again, check on twitter, we'll have the game thread elsewhere.

user-pic
JohnMagee on Nov 9 at 18:26

For real or not they're better than the sixers

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 18:37
+/-

Same starting 5 as always. Speights will play.

Hm, how many three pointers for J-Rich? I say he hits at least 7. Kobe your three point record in one game (as well as yours Donyell) is in danger!^^

Richardson is the least of my concern. Iguodala's on him. It's the other four guys I'm worried about.

user-pic
deepsixersuede on Nov 9 at 18:45
+/-

Brian, Frye is softer than my pillows but the fact he has 3 inches on Elton doesn!t bode well for Elton having a big night. And who chases Frye at the 3pt. line, he has been lighting it up.

Yup, Frye's range is a huge issue. Need to attack him on the blocks and utilize the strength advantage (maybe put him foul trouble).

Read an interesting blog post from Kate Fagan today. http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/sixers/Tough_Times.html

Trouble in paradise?

user-pic
JohnMagee reply to Max on Nov 9 at 19:10
+/-

Why wold anyone assume paradise with the sixers organization? It's probably not even one of the top 10 run organizations in the league

NBA TV blows. Anyone catch that first possession?

Nice low-post move by Brand. Grant Hill abusing Thad early.

Nothing you can do about that three. Iguodala's hand was literally on the ball when he went up.

Brand is shooting his free throws well, have to give him that.

The second Richardson three was on Iguodala, sucked down into the lane needlessly.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:18
+/-

2 and counting for Richardson

Jesus, the middle of the suns D is so friggin' soft. Just keep going to the rack.

"If _______________ the Sixers will win: Elton Brand attempts 15 shots."

Now why would a guy shooting 44% from the field on just 9 attempts a game win you the game if he shoots 15? (Although, interesting factoid here - Brand shot 47.65% from the field last season in games he attempted 15 or more, whereas just 42.05% in games he attempted 14 or less. Usually, the usage-efficiency correlation works the other way.)

Because he has a mismatch and he's not the type of guy who's going to take bad shots. So 15 shots should mean they went to him in the post and he attacked the mismatch. Ergo, good offense.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:21

3. I give him now 10+

I stand corrected, so far.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:22

It's the pace we need and like, but can we keep up?...

We should have fresher legs. Don't have the shooters they do, though. Funny that the Suns are trying to run some press. Don't think that's wise on their part.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 19:27

And the Suns have been pressing some too, which isn't wise on their part either.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:24

Our transition D is so bad it's scary. I think we shouldn't look for defensive improvments over the next years as long as Jordan is the coach.

The suns are even more weak on the defensiv end. Lou should try to give Nash as many fouls as he can.

user-pic

Nash only gets superstar fouls

user-pic

First stop of the season by Brand?^^

good game so far from him.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:26
+/-

EB just doesn't seem to getting proper extension on his elbow with his jumpers. His elbow/forearm extension is not high enough, hence the flat mid-range jumpers.

Again, don't have a baseline with him. Was his shot like that in LA? Being short all the time is usually a conditioning problem, could be elevation as well. You'd think it would be something he'd correct. He looks intent tonight.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 19:31
+/-

His shot wasn't like that in college or LA. He just needs to extend more, sort of like Dala does to a certain extent. His release point is too low b/c of the non-extension which makes it come off flat and short.

Willie first guard off the bench. One pass too many on that last play.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:34
+/-

Jrue sighting.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:34

Holiday in the game. YES!!!

Jrue in for final minute of the first.

Willie fighting for a board. Ugly pass doesn't hurt as the quarter ends.

Sixers up two after one, 27-25.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:38

Not a bad 1st quarter. They went to the line too many times which is the difference. 12 times to our 4.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:38
+/-

Bad pass by Green. If your not sure, let the clock run off.

Solid quarter, one of the better ones this season. Thx to the suns defense.

I like these 5 guys of the bench. I like Carney more than Kapono because of his defense. No Ivey is always a plus.

Lets see how they continue.

Beg. of second has been the worst stretch this season. Let's see who Jordan goes with.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:40

GOOD PASS SP8's!!

Nice! Head up after grabbing the board.

Gotta say I like the energy and I like how long it's taking for Phoenix to get into their offense, thanks to ball pressure.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:42

Great defense by the second unit. This looks like a group that could work.

Drive, drive, drive and drive some more.

user-pic

Nice steal. And the pass off the floor by Jrue.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:45

Holiday is a dream

Holy shit.

That is why we want Jrue Holiday on the floor.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:46

This game is similar to Fri. night's game in that the bench just has good energy. Wish it could become contagious with the starters.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:48
+/-

Wow that's the best the sixers played all year. The second unit looks very good so far. Holiday is so much better than Ivey. I can't understand how you can play Ivey before this kid. His handles are unbelievable good at his age and his D is just great.

The rotations look better today. Perhaps Jordan came to the conclusion that he can't just throw a player in there.

Carney and Holiday over Ivey and Kapono and our second group is a lot better

user-pic
JohnMagee on Nov 9 at 19:48

Speights has some real nice court vision I think...

BINGO. Jrue 4 3.

And, a charge :)

user-pic

I see confidence rising with the kid. A few hustle and positive plays will do that.

user-pic
JohnMagee reply to eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:01

Or maybe just getting on the god damn court.

He's good enough to play against the Suns but not the knicks?

Thad kid will be a great player.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 19:51

Thad, 4 on 3 there, use your teammates. The slump will wane if you just stop forcing.

Jrue guarding Grant Hill right now?

Jrue 4 3.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 19:57
+/-

I don't want to go to far but Holiday reminds me with every move he makes about Wade. His crossover looks very similar. The same with his change of pace. He has all the tools you can dream of. A shot that can develope into a weapon, a great handle, amzing defense....

Thad has a lot of tools but no handles, Iguodala has all the tools but no shot, Speights has all the tools but no defense. Holiday seems to have everything.

There's 4 for Richardson.

Sick fade by Holliday on the baseline. Finally missed a three, though.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:01
+/-

This kid will be a superstar!

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:03

We have to make a better job to get back on defense after a made basket. The young kids try to celebrate a little too much when they score. That's the first time of the season I like Jordan keeping the two bigs on the bench.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:03
+/-

Here it comes - how much burn will EJ give Jrue in the 2nd half with this showing he is having? Remember, he is odd with his rotations.

Probably none. Have to keep Ivey feeling involved :)

Everyone seems to have more pep in their step.

4 on Sammy.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 20:09
+/-

Sam got in in that quarter?

Yep, picked up 2 fouls in 1:32. I couldn't see the second, neither was what I'd call a quality foul. He scored after rebounding his own miss right when he came back in.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 20:15

I was too busy evaluating Jrue :)

5 for Richardson.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:08
+/-

Sam and EB on the bench the whole 2nd quarter? Well Brand in for the last few seconds. Any relation to the run we have been on. The energy of those bench guys was high level.

Suns are 8/16 from three and down by 12. Explain that.

66-54 at the end of the second. Big first half.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 20:11

We're shooting 60%. Which is similar to the percentage in the Knicks game.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:09

Without Richardson that game would be over. Just bad defense on that play. If you have to choose between Frye and Richardson choose Frye. Damnit. 12 points. Best first half of the season?

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:13
+/-

So, do we look this good or is it the Suns 5th road game showing itself? Long way to go with the way the Suns fire the long ball.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:30
+/-

Was my last statement an omen? Gave back 8 in the 1st 3 min of the 3rd.

Not sure if I like or dislike what Jordan did at the end of Jrue's run.

When Nash came back in, he brought Lou in to guard him and put the rook on Grant Hill. I would've liked to have seen how the rookie handled Nash, but I also get it. Sort of. Thought Jrue did a really good job even with a size mismatch on Hill.

Brand played well in the first quarter, Jordan just stuck with a second unit that was dominating and hustling in the second. I'd go back to Brand on offense to start the third.

I bet Sammy's on the bench to start the third w/ four fouls.

Steve Smith is apparently a moron.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 20:18
+/-

Not sure if you are on the same page but, I feel he did it to keep his confidence up. You could see the confidence showing in his look and his play. Probably didn't want him to maybe get abused and ruin his demeanor. But it would have been nice to see.

6 for Richardson.

Iguodala's hurt. Calf maybe.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:31
+/-

How many wide open Three pointers do we have to give up till Jordan understands that we at some point have to defend the three point line. Iguodala does a very poor job tonight on that end.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:33
+/-

Big 3 by Dala to stem the tide there.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:35
+/-

No extension again EB. It is too flat.

Nash is carving Lou up.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:35
+/-

Brands jumpers looks bad. Why is that?

We have to start to defend. Put Holiday on Nash, Williams does a very poor job. DAlembert isn't aggressiv because of his 4 fouls so Amare has an easy job down there.

It's too flat.

Man Amare is a load down there.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:36

Sam has to stop thinking he can drive or create after receiving the ball at that high post like that.

Sick look from Sammy to EB. And a two-hander for the finish! nice.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 20:40

That was a nice high/low. Just wish we had a better passing 5 to throw that pass. Reese?

user-pic

WTH is Bennett Salvatore looking at on that BS call on Speights?

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:43
+/-

We're not driving anymore. Settling for J's instead.

Barbosa is guarding Iguodala now. It's a huge failure every time they don't send him down to the blocks.

Finally went to it on the fourth time down the floor, he got doubled but they didn't do anything with the possession.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:45
+/-

Good for Dala to holler at Lou that he had a mismatch w/ Barbosa on him which created a double from the Suns but J Smith missed the shot after the swinging of the ball.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:45

We have to defend better. Iguodalas' shot looks a lot better so far this year.

Now please put Holiday on Nash.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:47

Yep, wish he'd show EB how to get more extension from that elbow up.

Sam Dalembert is leading the team in assists right now. I'm flabbergasted.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:49

Time for some of that bench energy. NOW!

Not one single second for Kapono through three quarters.

Sixers, up 86-84. Bad quarter there. Jrue didn't get back into the game.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:53

F me. 1 on the shot clock.

Great pass Jrue!!!

Jrue to Speights for an and-one. Sick.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 20:56

Just look at the different energy level from the bench compared to the starters. It is very noticeable.

It starts with pressuring the ball. It starts with Jrue.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 21:00
+/-

Everyone is more intense from the bench. Or does it just look like it b/c the Suns bench isn't up to par?

That was clearly a kick on Dudley w/ no call. Willie can't handle with that type of pressure, though.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 20:59
+/-

Why does Green bring up the ball when Holiday is in there. You can see a clear difference between a natural ballhandling like that of Holiday and one that came through hard work of Green. So give the Ball to Holiday now.

Speights = best midrange shooter in der league?

You love hyperbole :) Speights loved sticking that J in Amare's face, though.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 21:00

sorry German came through with der = the^^

Good move by Willie passing up that three and hitting Smith in the corner.

Speights a monster on the glass.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:02

Man, Speights fires it so quick and at will, with so much ease like he already knows it's going in before he lets it go.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 21:03
+/-

Brian, could you check in one of your next posts if Speights is one of the best midrange shooters in the league statistic wise? I can't believe it. He hits those shots every game.

He's more efficient than 82% of the league on overall jump shots. 74% of the league on spot-up jumpshots. On catch and shoot he's more efficient than 89% of the league. On midrange shots (17' to 3 pt line) he's more efficient than 95% of the league.

He's shooting 55% on all jump shots. 63.6% on spot-up jump shots. 75% on catch and shoot situations. 61.5% on shots between 17 feet and the 3 pt line.

All these numbers are heading into the game. I can't imagine them going down after tonight.

Smith has a finite number of minutes and a finite number of fouls. He's going to do his best to use all of the latter in the former.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:04
+/-

If we could just guard the dang 3 pt line! Make them make two's and they can't beat us.

Subs are getting whatever they want offensively here..

Dudley? Come on.

That was Kapono's fault. I know Dudley is only 30 percent but come on he's made 2 in the last 3 minutes.

Was that Kapono running out late? I thought it was Smith and it was just a weird rotation. ugh.

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 21:06
+/-

Dudley suddenly a 3point specialist? That's ridiculous. Man we should be up 10+ not only 2.

The bench is just great today.

You have to leave Jrue and Speights on the floor out of this timeout. Get Iguodala back in there and probably Thad. And stop giving up open looks at three.

user-pic
Rich reply to Brian on Nov 9 at 21:08

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 21:15

That's just tough. Why can't they get that layup to go. Now 3 behind. Please sixers get this win.

Two killer plays there-

THAD getting boxed out by Dudley for a put-back. An absolute killer.

Carney missing is close. He HAS to try and get fouled there

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:16

Why does it seem we always have someone sagging down to the lane on the weak side and then running out on a shooter behind the arc after a swing or cross-court pass? Stay with the shooter!!

A bad three from Lou. Great offense at this point. I'm fucking disgusted.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:18

Why does Lou keep gunning? They are inviting him to take that three.

And they should be.

Lou is killing us right now... bad on offense too

user-pic

I will be ............... Son of a .....................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sick to my stomach right now...

Iguodala locks Nash down, they get the miss, and no rebound. If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. Jordan not even thinking about a sub here either. Why get your best three-point shooter in the game.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:24

With 20 sec left, now you want to drive and attack Lou? Too little, too late. Sheesh!!!!

user-pic
TheAnswerAI on Nov 9 at 21:24

Thx lou and Jordan for taking away that game.

Great, I have to get up in 5 hours. It's 3:30 am over here. Why do I do that every time for that team? It's a shame.

Padding Lou's stats at this point. Still no subs.

They led by 4 when he sat Jrue for no reason, btw.

Sensing some discontent with our new coach.

F me.

Alright, going to try to eat dinner now. I'll have my wrap and the rotation chart later.

Here's what I would tell Eddie Jordan right now-

If Steve Nash could draw up a defensive scheme to play against, he wouldn't change a thing from what you just did.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:28
+/-

It would be too easy for me to single out Lou for this one, but what bothers me is like you said in your post the other day - why do they cheat down so much on the weak side with the intent to help when it is not really needed b/c it is the damn weak side.

Those three's given up were the backbreaker and senseless and something they already knew were coming since it was the Suns. Just stay with the shooter and you don't have to go desperately flying out trying to get a token hand in their face!! MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did we hire a coach who doesn't stress defense?

Honestly, you have to try to make Nash a scorer. I understand it's easier said than done, but come on you have to try. He eats up over-helping teams like nobody in the game does today. He lives to make the other guys better, you have to do your best to stay in front of him and make Amare try to beat you one on one if it comes down to that.

Another point- For all of the helping that goes on I sure see a lot of uncontested dunks and lay-ups. We're freakin stuck in the middle on the defensive end. A few easy dunks would be alright if we stayed with shooters. Yet we don't even come close..

user-pic
Court_visioN on Nov 9 at 21:44
+/-

Why did we hire a coach without a clue? No defensive scheme that I can see, other than excessive helping off the weak side and allowing dribble penetration. No sound offensive system getting the guys with mismatches (BRAND!!! IGUODALA!!!) shots down the stretch. Lou and Eddie Jordan cost us this game.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 21:48
+/-

I had that one as a win too I think. That one hurt. Real bad.

I am still waiting to see some more intensity and hustle out of certain guys (particularly most of the starters). How many of them would have dived on the floor like Jrue did or crashed into the back of a Suns player going for a board like Marreese did? They just seem to be going through the motions or something. Maybe it's the uncomfortableness with the schemes. I don't know. But they never realize to seize the moment and play every play like it is the last of the game and they are down by one.

very poorly coached through 7 games

eddies' heady's reply to Mike on Nov 9 at 21:55

user-pic
Court_visioN on Nov 9 at 21:55

A positive I took out of the last couple of games: Andre Iguodala has shown he can carry the team at times. He needs to assert himself in crunch time and demand the ball from Lou Williams.

yea iguodala will nab his 1st all-star selection this year. i like the way holiday looks too.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Mike on Nov 9 at 22:34

I don't see it. They don't often select all-stars off of poor teams. Or at least one's with poor records.

uh yea they do

and there is always that 1 guy who's overlooked every year who finally makes it. that's iguodala this year.

Haven't read the entire blog. So, forgive me if I'm repeating other comments.
What is this coaches agenda? There is no continuity. There is no pattern to the substitutions. How can Brand and Sammy spend the entire 4th qtr on the bench? He gives the opposition too much credit. If this game was coached properly they would've won it.

user-pic
bebopdeluxe on Nov 9 at 22:12

WORD, Max.

Anybody who does not think this team's primary problem is defense needs to go back and watch the tape of Game 6 against Orlando. This team has not defended since the LB era, and it is simply unfathomable that Stefanski would bring in a coach that does not have a proven pedigree of stressing defense.

A quick question: If Collins, JVG or Thibodeux were coaching this team, do you think they would be defending the perimeter as poorly as this team does?

user-pic
Court_visioN reply to bebopdeluxe on Nov 9 at 22:27

re: question - maybe, probably not, and no way in hell.

This team has a longggggg ways to go.

Generic post for every Sixer game for as long as I can remember:

-Poor pick & roll D
-Poor 3 pt D
-can't guard the PG
-Poor D rebounding
-Offensive lull in 3rd Q
-Missed FT's

Tonight at least hit FT's.

Otherwise another generic Sixer loss by an average (at best team) and moribund franchise. As usual the only bright spots were promising play by young players but nothing to suggest the TEAM is getting better in the short or long term.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 9 at 23:06

Moribund is a befitting term. At what point is someone, anyone going to remember the storied history this franchise once had? And the depths it has been sinking too for years? Please rescue me from all the water piling onto this ship. Please!

Here's looking at you Ed. That's right, either one. Stefanski or Snider, doesn't matter....you're both one and the same to me.

The E.S. brothers - Errable Simpletons.

Now I'm sure you two are nice guys but just not the one's that I want running my beloved and meaningful franchise. Sorry, I'm off the box now....
