jason kidd is a career 13.6/gm scorer. you don't need to score to be an effective PG.

About the last thread, I don't get how people are projecting Holiday to be a good offensive player. Can he shoot, does he blow by people, is he a good finisher? The answer is basically none of the above. Brian compared him to Tony Parker, and Parker struggled offensively his rookie year, but the raw ability to become a good scorer was obviously there. In his sophomore season Parker was already averaging 15 a game and shooting 46% from the field in an era where that was really good for a point guard. He may make, or deserve to make, an All-Defense team one day, he may learn to run an offense very well, but as far as scoring goes, he has good size and that's really the only basis on which you can project anything. And size doesn't guarantee anything. Shaun Livingston got hurt a lot, but when he played he was never that good. Holiday may well turn out to be the Luc Mbah A Moute of point guards.

Livingston was averaging 5 assists per game in 27 minutes as a rookie, and 6.8 assists per game in 32 minutes in 15 games as a starter. Those are actually fairly insane numbers for a 19 year old kid. It's really hard to project what kind of career he had if it wasn't for the knee injuries.

I don't think many people expect Holiday to ever be a 20-25 ppg guy. But I think most feel that if he gets his jumper to be consistent, and continues to show a little promise finishing with his left hand as he has, he can be a 15 ppg guy. If Holiday develops into a 15-18 ppg guy with 6-7 assists and stout defense, that's a borderline all-star.

Well fair enough, but it's not easy to average 15 a game in the NBA, not on a good team anyway, and I don't know that he has the skills to do it. Of course, the real question isn't how many points he's capable of putting up if given enough shots, it's how efficient he'll become, and he has quite a long way to go there, starting with the jump shot. His threes go in often enough somehow but more telling, I think, is that 28% mark from 16-23 feet.

I wasn't clear about this from the previous post, but I wasn't saying Jrue is going to be like Parker, what I was saying was he was the best comp, statistically, as a rookie for what Jrue has done to this point.

And why is poor shooting from 16-23 feet more telling than good shooting from three, other than the fact that the former supports your argument while the latter pokes holes in it?

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Feb 26 at 23:31
+/-

Because the guy's shot looks so flawed and was so flawed in college (.307 from the three there) that it seems more likely to me that he's just been a lucky three-point shooter and that his poor percentages from other areas on the court are a more accurate index of what he's currently capable of. He's only taken 82 threes this year, make 5 fewer and he'd have the same percentage he did in college. It's like if a guy hits a lot of home runs in April but you can just see that he's really not a power hitter, what your eyes see is probably more predictive of results in May-September than the raw numbers.

9 boards for Iguodala. One more board for the triple double. At least I can still root for that.

user-pic
JohnEMagee on Feb 26 at 19:58

Shooting is not as important to me as other skills for a point guard - People seem to forget what point guards are supposed to do

By the same token, a pick and roll point guard who can't shoot off the dribble and can't finish at the time can be much more easily neutralized.

I tend to try and think positive about a 19 year old kid with a work ethic (reportedly) improving in what he has...too many others seem ready to write him off at 19 but I'm willing to bet none of them 'peaked' skill wise at 19 (or if they did, well that's just sad)

I tend to try and think positive about a 21 year old kid with a work ethic (reportedly) improving in what he has...too many others seem ready to write him off at 21 but I'm willing to bet none of them 'peaked' skill wise at 21 (or if they did, well that's just sad)

BTW, I'm not sure where you got that response from my post, as I've never said anything about writing Holiday off.

My response was about whether Holiday could be effective without shooting, which you said isn't what you look for in a PG. I don't think he can be very effective without a jump shot. That's far different than me saying I don't think he'll develop a jump shot.

out of curiosity, why do you still incorporate the coaching comparisons in the game preview? just to leave us with a sour note before we watch the game?

It always makes me laugh to think about our coach vs. any other coach in the league. Vegas has already made a 3pt per game Jordan adjustment to every Sixers line.

funny that i was just watching jason kidd completely take over this game in atlanta while thinking about holiday. kidd was a big point guard who could defend & rebound, and who obviously ran just about the best floor game of anyone we'd seen at the time. but he couldn't shoot a lick for the first decade of his career. it's kind of awesome that the joke used to be how there was no "j" in kidd, and now he's like the best 3pt shooter in the league. anyway, i'm not saying holiday is the same kind of talent, but they have a lot of the same attributes, and ideally jrue grows into that type of player.

i love Iggy; but if he plays as bad as played the last time we played these Lakers, i'm going to have to start calling Artest the Iggy stopper...

Same starters.

Here we go.

Jrue's family is there tonight and Jrue is looking forward to guarding Kobe (even Jordan gave some applauds to Jrue's defense on CSN tonight).

If Jrue is going to have a great game, it should be tonight. This is his home coming.

I want Jrue to have a breakout game tonight. I don't care about anything else on this game.

Brand went w/ the headband, a more youthful look to bring some of the lift back to his legs.

Please stop....lol.....

Fisher's guarding Jrue, Kobe on Lou, Artest on Iguodala.

Lou on Fisher on the other end, Jrue on Kobe, AI9 on Artest.

Good penetration on the first two possession, dunk on the first, Sammy fouled on the second.

With the Sixers luck this season, I thought that Odom half-courter was going in.

Good first quarter. Up 25-24 heading into the second.

Didn't settle for jumpers. Lou, Iguodala and Jrue all put pressure on the defense w/ their dribble and either finished inside or sucked the defense to them and dished off to Sammy. Need to see another 36 minutes of that.

8 assists on 12 made shots. 4 for AI9, 2 apiece for LW and JH.

Second quarter much like the first.

24 minutes for Iguodala, didn't sit for a second in the first half.

Sorry, didn't see your post above before typing mine. Wow.

4. Brand, AI9, Jrue, Lou.

Dalembert's career high is 24 (set 3 times). Most shots he's ever made in a game is 12, most shots he's ever attempted is 19. (He's 10-16 now.) Which sort of interests me because it means that in one of his 3 career nights, he shot, or at least made, no free throws, as is also the case tonight. A career night without free throws has to be a rare thing.

He attempted 2 FTs early, missed both.

There we go. Nice drive by Thad.

Tom, then why did he not try different players. Carney was 3-9 and played 20 minutes? Brand played alot till the 4th quarter? Sammy sat on bench alot of the 2nd quarter.
