Game 27 Thread: PHI @ ORL

Holy crap.

So it looks like Orlando is getting Arenas, Hedo and Jason Richardson for Lewis, Gortat, Vince Carter, a #1 pick and cash.

This is such a desperation move, and they're just shuffling deck chairs, to be honest. They had a strong team that could've given Miami problems if they were just a little smarter about how they used Dwight and they got a legit point guard. Now they've tied an unbelievable amount of money up in Arenas and Hedo. Dwight is going to walk when he's a free agent, and I just hope the Sixers put themselves in a position to get him.

I have no idea what they are doing with these trades in midseason either. It might work but i they are absolutely crazy and a long shot IMO. I wonder if they push for Hinrich from Washington because he would fit perfectly in ORL

user-pic
Jason reply to Brian on Dec 18 at 15:21

I doubt the sixers have a chance to get him. Could you imagine him next to blake griffin though?

In a world where it rains lollipops and candy canes - sure why not

user-pic
Jason reply to GoSixers on Dec 18 at 17:45

Are you saying it wouldn't happen because LAC is cheap? If so they did offer Baron Davis and EB a max contract just a few years ago. If you're saying it wouldn't happen b/c Dwight wouldn't go to LAC, then maybe. but if that team is talented why not? Why would he choose sixers over LAC?

He wouldn't choose the sixers over the clippers, he wouldn't go to the clippers, and the clippers wouldn't offer him what he's worth to the league (as of the current CBA)

Certain posters here are obsessed with the clippers and yet seem ignorant of their history and their owner

user-pic
Jason reply to GoSixers on Dec 18 at 18:36
+/-

He offered both EB and Baron davis max contracts in the summer of 2008, but would be too cheap too offer Dwight howard a contract? I don't understand how you can say that sterling is a cheap owner.

Dwight Howard supposedly comes from a strong religious background. Donald Sterling uses whores, is a racist and a slum lord who boos players on his own team.

Dwight Howard will get 'max money' from every team in the league, not sure what makes the clippers so special, except of course you know they already have super stars in griffin and gordon...and well, they did finally win a road game last night against the powerful clippers

D'oh - pistons not clippers

user-pic
Jason reply to GoSixers on Dec 18 at 18:46
+/-

How many teams will be able to make a max offer? It can't be every team.

Reason that I like the clippers is because they can probably find a way to offer two max contracts that summer (can move gordon with davis to get out of that contract if they need to, i'm sure there are other ways as well) and bring Dwight howard and Chris paul or D howard an Deron Williams who would play with Blake griffin, their 2011 lottery pick and 2012 wolves pick or clippers pick. I'm sure they could turn that team into a much better version of what the heat did this off-season.

"a strong religious background. "

I'm not going to rule the clippers out of D-howard FA landing because of that. If that's the case and he chooses to go to a place with less talent good for him.

If the two rumored trades are really that close to being completed isn't it likely the players will be held out of the game tonight? I think with all the turmoil in the Orlando locker room (this is my assumption) with this looming trades, this might be a good chance to beat a very good team on the road.

The rumored trades of course are Carter and Gortat to the Suns for Richardson and Turkoglu and Lewis for Arenas and a big. That's three important players (at least) that will not play tonight if the trades really are going through. Pietrus is also questionable due to injury...

user-pic
Rich reply to Xsago on Dec 18 at 14:50

Yeah I assume then they don't play tonight, right? That's not a lot of options for SVG tonight if that's true.

user-pic
kevinollie4three reply to Xsago on Dec 18 at 14:52

pietrus is included in the trade too so he's out. the lewis deal is still pending apparently they're trying to get the wizards to take richardson as well. either way how many are dressing for the magic tonight? 9?

By my count that would be 4 guys out of their 9-10 man rotation held because of trade issues. That's including 2 starters.

Why would they want to do that? Richardson is the only good player Orlando's getting back!

Oh, you mean Quentin.

There will be some lineup juggling, but i think the final roster will be:

Dwight
Bass
Hedo
Richardson
Nelson

Sixth man:
Gilbert Arenas

Stretch Four:
Ryan Anderson

user-pic
Tray reply to jakey on Dec 18 at 16:05

Well more time for Bass is nice. They could've done that just by benching Lewis, though.

If both these trades happen, otis smith has created a disaster

ESPN is confirming the Phoenix trade as of an hour ago but still saying the Arenas trade is in discussion. I think if you get rid of Vince you don't need to get rid of Lewis and adding Arenas (just based on injury history) is a mistake

For those interested - UNC is on CBS in about 20 minutes

Smith is nuts. He needs to be clearing space to re-sign DH and add CP3- while instead he is taking on a boatload of long term salarty that will drive Howard away.

IIRC, both Howard and CP3 have player options after next season. And the Kninks only have essentially only 22M in guaranteed salary after next year. So you could see Amare, CP3 and Howard after next year... or at least DH and CP3 on the same team somewhere other than orlando.

I would rather have Gil's contract on the books than Rashard's since Gil is turning his player option into a team option.

Both are incredibly overpaid and useless beyond their jumpers.

user-pic
tk76 reply to CB on Dec 18 at 15:47

I have not heard that... I thought Arenas had a player option and then another guaranteed year after that. Has something changed where it is now a team option?

Shamsports lists Arenas as having an early termination option. This is different than a player or team option. Not realy sure what it means...

http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/wizards.jsp

whoops, misplaced my ETO explanation reply. It's below.

Well at least that's one potential long-term contender knocked out. I mean the guy literally just blew up his franchise. You would think he was Rip Van Winkle or something, like he's been sleeping in a cave for 5 years and he still thinks it's 2005 and these players are good.

user-pic
Rodney Buford on Dec 18 at 17:24
+/-

If they weren't so committed to their 3pt offense, Carter + Gortat could have gotten them Iggy I'd guess.

They are primed to be picked off tonight down so many bodies. Have to win this one now.

ETO is a player's opt-out option (whereas a traditional player option is an option to add a year to the contract). This is what Lebron/DWade/Bosh etc. all had. Obviously no way Arenas opts out of his contract since he'd be lucky to get the minimum in a new deal, so Orlando is stuck with this morass for years on end and a gazillion dollars. This is a good warning for teams to not hire former NBA players as GMs, they become friendly with current players and it completely clouds their brains. The Wizards save $20 mil with Lewis, in addition to unloading a man who brought guns into the locker room, faked an injury, and took a dump in a teammate's shoe. What did the Magic fans do to deserve Otis Smith?

It's not a good warning not to hire former players (Jerry West is a former player folks), it's a good warning to people to make decisions with their head and nothing else. If Otis being friends with Arenas had ANYTHING to do with his decision to make this deal, he should be fired immediately, not because he's a former player, but because he made bad decisions.

Though according to all reports, Dwight Howard signed off on every one of these deals and is excited about it (reminds me a lot of bad deals Cleveland made in an attempt to appease Lebron)

user-pic
tk76 reply to GoSixers on Dec 18 at 17:43
+/-

Yeah, they appease Howard this year... and then he leaves after next season. Sort of like how the Cavs are stuck with Jamison.

And the wizards deal is now official as well - bucher claims it actually saves orlando some money this year tax wise :)

So does this mean DH is pre-destroying his team for when he makes a Decision to go somewhere else?

Hmmm well Kate Fagan has some info and a video on how the trade will affect tonight's game...kinda:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/deep-sixer/Lineup_shuffling_for_Orlando_Magic.html

Well you'll enjoy this, Brian. A giant puff piece on Cousins (who is playing a little better recently) and how he talks to kids with cancer and has a white roommate. They even have video of his visits to cancer-ridden children.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/12/17/demarcus-cousins-reputation-precedes-him-deceives-you/

Raise your hand if you grew up without a father or any male role model in your life (raises hand)

Cousins issues are eminently understandable and easy to deal with if you know how - sadly most people don't know how to deal with them - acknowledge them as issues or have a god damn clue how to understand em.

Cousins issues are blown completely out of proportion and easy to deal with, but much like the whole 'grienke can't pitch in new york' BS - people refuse to acknowledge things that they don't understand - and honestly are pretty easy to fix.

Take about six months to break cousins down and rebuild him most likely as long as it's someone who understands it and has been through it. The talent is there, the Kings should work their ASSES off to getting him past his attitude, and it's really not that hard. Trust me

user-pic
Tray reply to GoSixers on Dec 18 at 18:51
+/-

Um... I kind of agree! Except, I wouldn't be so certain that everything will be fine in six months, as we know from experience that some players with mental makeup issues just never change. Or only get worse. Like Arenas, who went from weird and funny to totally out of touch with reality. I do think that Cousins's issues are overblown, though.

I care less about his petulance than I do his laziness. And his attitude isn't what's causing him to kill his team at every opportunity. He's just not a very good player at this point, and he's never going to be unless he puts in a ton of work.

Brian

I don't disagree with what you're saying but I still think it all goes back to the same sources, his attitude, his perceived laziness, coachability issues.

When I watch Cousins play and read interviews about him he reminds me a lot about Rasheed (who I believe had issues no one ever dealt with in the ADHD department)

I'm not psychologist, so I can't really speak to what the actual problems are, nor how fixable the guy is in that department. All I know from what I've seen so far is that he's destructive to his team on the floor, and a lot of it stems from being lazy.

Read what I said and tell me where I said it WILL be better in six months, I said it could be with the right people working with him. Less if he's willing to really work on it.

So the 10 turnovers and 10 fouls over the past two games is him playing better?

Here's a fun stat for you, Cousins leads the league in personal fouls, in only 591 minutes of action.

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Dec 18 at 18:53
+/-

10 and 12 over the last three. Anyway, he's been scoring in a not completely inefficient manner and rebounding lately. In previous games, not so much. So, I say he's playing better.

The rebounding has been good, I'll give you that. Still a big drag on the team in terms of scoring efficiency, turnovers and fouls.

user-pic
tk76 reply to Tray on Dec 18 at 19:10
+/-

Its funny how there there there is a PR puff piece for every player with "attitude problems" in sports. It fdoes not matter if its Darryl Strawberry, AI, Sprewell or whomever. They all have had sugary sweet articles written about how they are misunderstood and simply learning and growing up to overcome their trouble youth.

The truth is there is no good way for us to guage any of these guys. We only see them on TV and read whart the press puts out. I have no idea how Cousins issues rank as compared to other trouble makers. I just know he has issues. maybe he will outgrow or overcome them, maybe not. It will likely be entertaining.

user-pic
Tray reply to tk76 on Dec 18 at 23:50

Yeah, it is pretty funny. Though to be sure, Cousins is probably a pretty decent guy some of the time. I mean, he doesn't seem like a total prick or something, like, I don't know, Jose Canseco.

I've got the Orlando broadcast, should be fun listening to them gush about Hedo and Arenas.

We all know how much of a team first guy Gilbert is, he's going to be an awesome sixth man ;)

So Orton is their backup five at this point? Wow.

Well, at least we'll get a chance to see what Gortat can do with legit playing time now in Phoenix.

Nah, Earl Clark is :)

Hawes' rejuvenation (that is if he was ever good, which is unclear) gets its biggest test tonight.

Goukas talked about the rotation charts I do here on the air last year. He didn't mention the blog by name, though.

So at what point does Steve Nash say ' are you freaking kidding me'?

This is a funny (ironic?) read from Monday about how important Rashard Lewis is to the Magic :)

Ted leonsis on simmons podcast talked nicely about Arenas and what he meant to the wizards yesterday.

Holy crap Hawes beat Dwight on the tip.

Howard on Brand to start.

Jrue misses a short J. I'd like to see them get Jrue a layup early, he needs to see the ball go through the hoop.

Damn what a block by Hawes, after the Jrue turnover.

Shit, Jrue. Not sure if that second TO goes to him, but it should.

Really sloppy with the ball here.

Good move AI9.

Our defense is not getting back. And when it does, it's chaotic.

Jrue boxed Howard out on that last play.

Good job by jodie to get the first foul on Dwight.

Keep making Bass shoot jumpers and Nelson a driver on defense.

Hawes with another block. They gave the foul to Brand on the second attempt.

Nice sequence there. Iguodala is so much better when he's shooting threes in rhythm.

Sort of a helter-skelter start. We just need to calm down some. Seemed to on those last two possessions.

Nothing we can do if Howard goes quick with that hook off the glass. Luckily, they won't go to it consistently.

Great quick outlet by EB

Sixers have no respect for Malik Allen. Brand doubled off him onto Redick right away.

Nice EB, let's keep getting good looks.

Brand can do work with either Allen or Bass on him, they need to take advantage of that.

Hawes blocked Howard again.

Don't like that shot by Jrue. He dribbled it into a worse jumper, then took it.

Good foul by Hawes there. I'm not crazy about some of the shots here. Jrue with an off the dribble long deuce, Hawes with a Kobe-esque fadeaway.

Then AI9. Take the ball into Dwight's body like Jodie did.

This Meeks/Lou back court is such a bad idea. At least Igudoala is out there w/ them. He should be running point forward.

Andre's getting involved early tonight on the offensive end. We need that from him.

In comes Speights. He's got 6 fouls, if nothing else. Use em on Dwight.

Boy, teams sure are playing Thad hard to that left hand. They've scouted him well on that. He's going to have to counter that with a spin-move or something.

Jason Williams is on Lou. I'd iso him and tell him to drive right by him to the hole.

This defense on Howard is awful. Thad should be helping off him, and then blowing by him on the other end.

user-pic

It's a shame we're on a back-to-back tonight, as we should try and run them in the ground only having 8 players available.

This sure would be a nice one to steal. Sixers need any edge they can get on this trip.

There best stretch was when they were getting early offense. They should keep trying to push the ball.

Missing open threes, sounds familiar.

Why is Nocioni back in the rotation, all of a sudden?

Showcasing?

I wish. Though if anyone's watching, his stock is moving in the wrong direction.

And here I thought his stock couldn't be worse

Speights had a dunk there and just coughed the ball up.

Enough with this split screen, we don't need to see this jackass to hear his spiel.

God, this Magic unit is a joke, and our guys can't take advantage. Thad needs a touch every time.

Our unit is kind of a joke too. Probably going to tread water.

If Redick stays on ET, they should post him up.

They did. ORL doubled and Turner found Nocioni on the weak side. Need someone on the strong side to give him an easier outlet, then swing the ball quickly.

Lou leads a fast break slower than anyone I've ever seen. Collins is getting a double every time when Turner touches the ball in the post.

Anyone else follow Chris Mannix from SI on Twitter? I swear the guy is related to Arenas.

Maybe all of SI

This is an excerpt from Ian Thomasen

The Orlando Magic have made a bold return to championship contention Saturday by packaging Vince Carter in a six-player exchange for Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu, a league source confirmed to SI.com. Feels sort of like last night's game score-wise. We play very respectable D for the most part with our usual lapses, but we just look inept as hell on O at times. Yes, the talent's limited, but we're not that bad to where we can't score vs another 2nd unit. It's been like this for the last 4 or so games.

Yeah, but last night they got pretty good shots with the exception of the 1st four minutes of the second half. Not many good looks tonight at all.

Have we seen Jrue and EB in pick and roll against Dwight at all tonight?

Don't think so, no.

Yep, with the exception of the second half of the Clippers game. Thad hasn't been there, that's been the big difference. He was fueling the offensive attack off the bench w/ those drives from the top of the key. LA was doubling him, not sure what ORL is doing to him, but those plays haven't been there.

Way to draw the foul EB on DH, his third.

Yes Brand! Much better start to the third offensively.

Three on Howard. Good pump fake by EB after Jodie and Jrue cut through, taking help defenders out of the picture (not that they would've doubled EB with Dwight on him).

Excellent D by Jrue on that possession. Denied the ball to Jameer, then ran him out of bounds w/out fouling. Bass bailed them out late in the clock, though.

I think our strategy has to change. We shouldn't leave guys wide open, but Duhon is a guy that we can help off a little. Same with Bass and Allen. Foul Dwight hard when he gets it.

If the game stays close it is definitely Hack a Dwight time.

If Malik Allen is going to hit 18-footers, fine.

Dre for 3!

Wow, Iguodala is ON tonight.

Iguodala is not bad on those wide open 3's. He'd get more on a better team.

On cue, Brand starts helping really strong off Allen. Nice.

Iguodala is feeling it now. Seemed like he was due for a really hot shooting night.

Yup, they're leaving Allen and Brand is doubling to keep the ball out of Howard's hands. Good move. Hawes has been terrible tonight.

The bench is going to have to hold up when they come in, up 8. Just finish guys.

Sixers are pretty much right at 1 point-per-possession. Orlando is -8. If you care.

That's the second time Jrue tried to go under a screen and Howard pivoted and picked him off, that's actually a foul for a moving screen, but they won't call it.

Can't stop Brand.

EB looking crisp.

14 in the third for EB.

Great defensive possession, EB just got manhandled. Nothing he really could do.

He's feeling it too.

Very, very good third quarter.

Please don't go with a stupid lineup to start the fourth, Doug. Push this lead now and Orlando will fold, they're feeling sorry for themselves, don't give them a second wind.

I don't think Iguodala has his usual mobility. He's not looking to drive at all.

Tech on Dre? what?

Rare tech for Iguodala. I never saw what happened on the play.

Thad has been off by just a hair on so many of those drives. So frustrating.

I wish Marreese would get his head together. He could be very useful, if for nothing but his size.

Why Nocioni instead of Turner here? Come on, Doug.

"good Lou"

Heh. Speights is unconscious.

First one to 90 wins? That's only 8 for us, 18 for them.

How does that shot not count?

There have been many excellent defensive possessions tonight. Lou's work on Nelson and Thad on Bass there was AWESOME.

Yeah, that was a really nice def. possession. Unfortunately, if they hold out for this one, it'll be another win that's discounted. Whatever. Just finish it out.

user-pic

Lou, Dre, Thad, Speights, Hawes. Hmmmnnn.... maybe not Lou though...

Bad call.

Ugh, Lou.

Iguodala is pissed, decided to take it out on them w/ a drive. Like to see that.

Orlando is tired, they're just fouling now instead of playing defense. Just put them out of their misery.

Will Iguodala step up for a big last 5 minutes? this game is still in question.

Btw, Q Rich goes on Iguodala's list, too. He had those two drives in the first half, otherwise he's 0/6.

user-pic

He should be on everyone's list...

Big lineup here: Lou, Iguodala, Young, Brand, Hawes.

user-pic

We're getting slaughtered on the boards, aren't really shooting any better, this game is just free throws.

5 on Hawes, probably not a bad thing considering his game so far tonight.

EB w/ the block and takeaway from Howard. Looked like a foul to me, though.

Game.

Dagger, Lou.

Hawes hasn't played half-bad D tonight vs DH, considering.

Why is DC slowing us down its still 3.5 left...Lou get the 3 to fall, bad shot though

What do you think, Brand, Lou, AI9 or Otis Smith for player of the game?

Dag, we've blocked our fair share of DH's shots tonight.

Hard to complain about anything really in this half.

Jrue with only 20 minutes tonight. Hope Collins is talking to him about his play and not just jerking his chain.

He can share the doghouse with Turner.

user-pic
Rich reply to Brian on Dec 18 at 21:28

I think it was just a matter of Lou playing great. Jrue played a sound 3rd Quarter.

6 point game with 50 seconds left. Fuck, this team is awful in this spot.

Ugh, two-possession game with 53 seconds to go.

How is that a foul. Jameer likes too fall a lot.

Why did Doug C. call for four consecutive Iggy/Lou isos? What is the deal? He keeps sending Brand, Hawes, and Young to the sidelines, for no apparent reason.

OK, just hit one of these three free throws and it's game over. For the second time.

There we go.

Lou is greater than Arenas (the actual symbol can't be posted here.)

> ambersand "g" "t"

And you're absolutely right. They could've had Lou for Gortat and accomplished more for their team.

you need a semi-colon after the T.

That's an amazing statement - you think? Otis likes to make a big splash.

97-89, Sixers is your final. The Ice Capades trip is off to a stellar start!

I know some people hate this success, but if the Bucks lose to the Jazz tonight, the Sixers are in a virtual tie for the 8th seed.

I am not pleased. Especially because Jrue (to an extent) and ET have been underperforming . I worry that this success leads to bad deals this off season.

user-pic
tk76 reply to Rich on Dec 18 at 22:06

If they are not going to be bottom 6 it probably matters little.

It does matter that Jrue and Turner combine for only about 30 minutes.

Otis Smith became GM in 2006. So basically any success he has had is due to Dwight Howard.

Notable moves by Smith:

-Signed R. Lewis to insane deal.
-Traded away Ariza for Brian Cook and Mo Evans.
-Traded for VC.
-Traded for Arena, Turkoglu and JRich.

You get the #1 pick because you are poorly managed.

bunch of games in a row where the P.O.T.G. is a non-fan favorite (Hawes, and now Lou.)

It's Brand tonight, actually.

user-pic
tk76 reply to Brian on Dec 19 at 0:00

Both were good. Brand went for 20/13 with 3 blocks.
Lou scored 24 on 9 shots and chipped in 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and only 1 TO and drew a ton of fouls.

Brand had Howard on him, and defended Howard, and finished with 20 on 14 shots. 13 boards (10 defensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks. Pretty huge game, especially considering who he had covering him. Lou was definitely good Lou, but Brand was the reason they won the game, imo.

Who is the bachup PF for ORL right now?

I guess it's Malik Allen, will be Ryan Anderson when he comes back from injury. They're super thin up front.

To be fair to Smith, he has made his team a little better in the short-term. Jason Richardson's better at this point than Carter or Lewis. Maybe Turkoglu will be good now that he's back in Orlando. Either way, Richardson's a big upgrade, especially in the playoffs. I'm sure we all remember how pathetic Vince was last postseason.

Richardson's been good playing off Nash. Take away a PG playmaker, though, and I'm not sure he's very effective. I'm not sure he's the shooter Rashard was, though he's an upgrade to him now. Turkoglu wasn't very good his last season in Orlando, and he's declined steadily since then. Arenas is just terrible, and I have to assume he's going to take minutes away from Redick, who is at least a deadly shooter.

Imo, Orlando needed two things. A legitimate point guard who could get the ball to Howard more efficiently, in better spots for him to be successful, and a wing who could create his own shot and carry the offense for stretches. They did nothing to solve the first issue, obviously, and for the second issue, they got an inefficient gunner, on overweight, over-the-hill wing, and a catch-and-shoot guy. For that, they traded away any depth they had in the front court.

Either way, I don't think they were even sniffing the finals this season, but they've also added on a ton of salary in Arenas and Hedo.

The Magic now have Gilbert Arenas, Hedo Turkoglu, Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson under contract for the 2013-2014 season for a total of $41M. Dwight Howard is going to re-sign in Orlando to play with that?

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Dec 19 at 1:58
+/-

Um, no (no, Howard will probably not re-sign to play with that). But I don't know where they were going to get the legit point guard from. There's just no way an NBA-owned Hornets will deal Paul. Besides, they don't have the assets. If Nash hits the trade market, they didn't have the assets for that either. Does this deal make the cap situation much worse? Lewis was as long-term of a deal as any of the ones they got back. I just don't know how much better of a deal they could have gotten for their toxic assets. Or see what other options they had. They basically either had to stick with their crappy overpaid players on long-term contracts or deal them for slightly less crappy overpaid players on long-term contracts. That's all you're going to get for a Rashard Lewis or Vince Carter. Now, at least they have some tiny chance, and I say that because Richardson can be what Rashard was the year they got to the Finals. Richardson doesn't need a brilliant point guard to set him up, he just needs someone to pass him the ball when he's open behind the arc. I mean, if Lewis could thrive without a great playmaker, surely Richardson can. Arenas... he can't be quite as bad as he's been so far (though he can be pretty lousy). He'll at least get less defensive attention in Orlando. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a honeymoon period where this all appears to be working out. Not that there's much of a chance it will in the end. But at least it tells Howard they're trying. He's made it very clear that he hated playing with Carter and Lewis.
