Game 45 Thread: PHI @ TOR

We are 100% sure Hawes is starting?

Haven't heard one way or the other, but that's my assumption going in.

I dream of the day when this isn't even a possibility.

Regarding Hawes (and Bargs):

My concern is that once a player gets hot he's harder to slow down. And if you guard a perimeter player with Brand or Thad, you will get easy looks and a better chance the player heats up.

assuming you meant Brand or Hawes, right?

Yeah, ignore what I say and respond to what I mean.

Otherwise you will find my posts confusing...

Otherwise you will find my posts more confusing...

Fixed :)

I think Hawes will give up easy 10-15 foot jumpers, Thad will give up easy lay ups. Thad is like the puppy that overruns the tennis ball, and Bargns will make him pay, plus there is a 5 inch height difference.

Why not put Iggy on Bargns instead of thad?

user-pic

Why not use Noce. He will annoy him. And he fears the mullet.

user-pic
tk76 reply to tk76 on Jan 26 at 18:20

I say that only semi-seriously. But if Brags starts going off I would use Noce to try and take him out of his game.

One of those hip checks after he shoots would do the trick :)

Sixers 17th most valuable franchise

http://www.forbes.com/2011/01/26/knicks-lakers-bulls-business-sports-basketball-valuations-11-teams_slide_18.html

Cavs more valuable ( no complete list)

Considering the owners of the sixers own the stadium - 17th seems sad

Man, Robert Sarver is really fleecing people. valuable franchise, high ticket prices. Good operational margins. And yet they yearly give away picks and players to save money.

"they remain among the league's most profitable teams thanks in large part to its sweetheart arena deal. During the past five seasons the team's average operating income has been $28 million, more than any franchise that does not call Chicago, Detroit, Houston or Los Angeles home."

CLippers are 22nd

Am I the only one who thinks it's pathetic that teams like the utah jazz and toronto raptors are more valuablle than the team in one of the top 7 populated cities in america?

BTW - thumbs down to forbes.com to the bleacher report like slide show without one page making it easy to see where each team is :)

user-pic
tk76 reply to GoSixers on Jan 26 at 18:54

Maximizes hits.

Yeah, that's kind of a frowned-upon practice that Forbes loves. I don't find it as bad as Bleacher Report turning every pointless story they publish into a slide show, though. I think Bleacher Report might be the web site I despise most on the entire internet.

Hey - part of my job is the web marketing - i know WHY they do it - i just think it's a lousy UI Issue and I'm sure turns people off at various sites.

It's also clunky - in this day and age all 'slide shows' should be ajax implemented (yeah i know the page hits thing takes a hit) but sites like BR and now forbes it indicates that instead of wanting to succeed on the quality of their site they want to manipulate the system.

Then again - since someone gave br 10 million - manipulating the system still works cause venture capitalists are still stupid and haven't hired enough smart web folk to analyze WHY a site has such elevated traffic numbers

Toronto fans love the raptors. They care about their team. Nothing surprising about that.

It's slightly more complicated than 'fan love' for value of a franchise - but the sixers fan base attendance does truly suck

I love that the clippers are 22nd and still uber profitable :)

PS - Hawes is starting tonight

If they had a fan passion list, i'd be willing to bet Sixers are bottom 5.

That depends

are we counting band wagon fans - the number of passionate fans - or the passion of the fans

because the passion of the philadlephia fans - regardless of quantity of REAL fans - is unsurpassed by most fan bases in professional sports - top to bottom.

Based on crowd volume.

You mean like how much water they displace in a giant graduated cylinder?

Calderon is back and Alexis Ajinca is in uniform.

I seriously pray we get to see the Andrea/Alexis front court for the Raptors.

Alrighty, here we go, Hawes loses the tip, what else is new?

For the love of God, please give Jrue the freedom to bitch Calderon tonight.

Did they mis-spell defence (sic) on the broadcast, or is that the Canadian spelling?

Probably some sort of french canadian nonsense - man the french suck

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 19:19
+/-

The British spelling. Shared by Canadians.

Even worse

Well, Jrue drove on the first play, shot blocked by Amir Johnson.

Why is meeks guarding Derozan...

Would you put him on Wright? He'd be giving up like 6 inches.

I'd have him on calderon.

That kind of wastes Jrue.

You can't have meeks on derozan. I'd have him on the bench before playing, but if he's playing i'd rather not have a mismatch on defense like that.

Now we we have meeks and Lou in wtf.

Heh, Meeks with a lob for Brand that he finishes, but not quite with a dunk. AI9 w/ a steal/dunk. Good start.

Does hawes have a good excuse for his missed tip in?

Hawes is such a waste of space.

Sloppy hoops.

That was an epic dunk attempt by Bargnani, it was like Hawes and he were trying to out-sissy each other. Winner, comedy.

Nice lob by Jrue, and Hawes actually dunked it. Go figure.

Peyton to Jrue for the backdoor slam, nice.

TOR's defense is pitiful.

user-pic
danny J reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 19:39

Who is Peyton? Is that Hawes?

Ugh, stop w/ the sloppy turnovers, Jrue.

Benched

Yep, quick hook for Jrue. Fuck me.

Doug Collins is an awesome coach

user-pic
tk76 reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 19:21
+/-

He'll put him back in and he'll get his minutes. No problem IMO.

Nope, sorry, it is a problem, it sends the signal that Jrue must play error free basketball or he's going to be benched for a shorter worse 'point guard' while the starting center can continue to suck hairy salty balls and make mistake after mistake and suffer no consequence - so jrue could end up being more concerned, and tight, and not just let the game come to him.

So yes - problem - not the minutes - but the intent and the stuipidity of the coach pulling the 20 year old point guard of the future (has he even started 82 games yet) for a few mistakes early in a game instead of letting him play through them.

It's the same issue as putting him i nthe corner in the fourth quarter - he'll never improve this way

user-pic
tk76 reply to GoSixers on Jan 26 at 19:24
+/-

He had a sloppy turnowver and pulled up for a terrible early jumper (that went in.)

Its not a hook if you coach him up and put him back in.

Well, on that jumper, if Lou takes it and makes it everyone's clapping and saying what a great closer he is.

Then he should be in next whistle - the raptors helped out with a time out - do we get lou out or does lou stay?

Any longer and it's punishment

user-pic
Tray reply to GoSixers on Jan 26 at 19:26
+/-

I don't know, Rondo suffered similar treatment early in his career and doesn't seem to have become a tight player who's afraid to let the game come to him.

How do you have time to watch all the sixers games, all the celtics games and still be some sort of 'lawyer'?

user-pic
Tray reply to GoSixers on Jan 26 at 19:31
+/-

I don't watch Celtics games, or most Sixers games. Anyway, I'm not a lawyer, I'm just a student at Georgetown Law (and bitterly disappointed about it).

:O my brother = G-town Law student.

I saw the first one, Wright snuck up behind him in transition. What happened on the second one, I was typing something, didn't see it.

And Lou just dribbles until there are 10 seconds left on the clock. Luckily, it doesn't take long to get an easy look on this defense.

Our defense is shit w/ no pressure on the ball.

This announcer is way more annoying than even Zumoff.

Who exactly is benefiting from Jodie meeks "stretching" the floor?

Jodie Meeks?

user-pic
tk76 reply to Jason on Jan 26 at 19:25

Stretching is thought to reduce injuries...

OK, there's a terrible turnover by Lou. Where's the hook?

user-pic
tk76 reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 19:30
+/-

Because he's not a 20 year old who's trying to learn to become a true PG?

Lou is told to play that way.

Well see - double standards like that are what make Collins a genius then

user-pic
tk76 reply to GoSixers on Jan 26 at 19:34
+/-

I don't completely agree with how he uses Lou.

But that does not mean he is making a mistake with Jrue when he pulls him out for 3 minutes for instruction and a re-adjustment. Jrue gets plenty of PT for a 20 year old PG.

And yes, I don't agree with how Jrue is marginalized late in games. But that is a different issue than taking him out when he is running the team wrong. As long as he puts him back in quickly... which he did.

I'm not sure 3 minutes is quickly as it's 25% of the 1st quarter and the raptors started a nice little run when he got removed (coincidence maybe sure - but i'm blaming lou damn it)

To me - the fourth quarter marginalization and the unnecessary first quarter benching (Just call a time out and talk to the kid during it about being better with the ball - if he's as good as collins CLAIMS he can be - he'll get it) - are the same issue

Bargnani wins Sissy Bowl 2011. He's the first to go to the locker room w/ a phantom injury.

My bigger problem is that Hawes is still in.

Sure he made some passes. But the team is horrible when he is on the floor. He makes them a "slow" team.

He just makes them worse - in every aspect of the game (except sissiness it seems)

Jrue back for Andre Iguodala - genius move - keep lou on the floor

On the plus side - i played derozan today (over james harden)

Time to go small here.

Jrue/ET/Iggy/Thad/Brand.

and a terrible shot by Lou out of the timeout.

Sonny Weems - that's like my favorite NBA name since pooh richardson (and no pooh jeter isn't as good)

What is Lou's vertical? Pathetic jump on that O-Board attempt.

Ugh, just a terrible first quarter, on both ends. At least finish it strong. They should be ashamed of themselves.

We look awful. Why so flat?

Taking this team for granted?

Mediocre teams sometimes look like shit

user-pic
Tray reply to TS on Jan 26 at 19:38

Perhaps they've bought into the hype about what an awesome up-and-coming sub-.500 team they are.

Maybe the Raptors are like what the Sixers are to the Suns. They just match-up terribly.

Yay, Lou iso. Haven't seen enough of this.

PHI 20, TOR 29 pitiful first quarter. Better wake up quickly.

Collins should play Lou the entire 2nd quarter to make sure this doesn't continue. :(

Lou-Meeks-Nocioni-Hawes-Battie

Ugh. I'm skipping the rest of the game if they don't show up this quarter. Defense was just terrible. We don't even try to rebound.

Raptors shooting 52% not good

Just turned it on what is this crap

How about no shooting jumpers for five minutes. Take everything to the hoop.

I think we've scored 4 points since Lou came in.

c mon jrue

Ugh, bad foul by Jrue. Hope he doesn't get yanked, because he's pretty much carrying them on the other end.

Speights looks active.

thaddeus blows the pick and roll D, then just freelances. wtf?

Alright, it's tied now. No looking back.

This P&R with Speights is unstoppable.

Isn't a good P&R generally unstoppable - Stockton/Malone for instance?

Jrue/Speights isn't really on the same level, but yeah. It's almost impossible to stop when you've got two HOF players running it.

Sorry - wasn't meaning to compare them - just that a good P&R partnership is hard to stop - if it works for Jrue and Speights they should go to the well repeatedly until it don't.

I wonder if it would always work for these two or is it just the soft raptors underbelly?

Well, it'll definitely work better than it does w/ Hawes.

i like this

No jumpers. Everything has been in the lane after Thad's missed J from the wing about 10 possessions ago.

Until that. 5 on the clock when Jrue took that? Should've driven.

Sweet pass, Andrea.

Ugh. Meeks and Iguodala rejected by the rim on that break.

Nice dive by Speights.

Starters points

Toronto-33
Phi-18

Damnit, Alexis in for Andrea. No pole dancing front court for TOR, yet.

Good jump here, AI9 and DeRozan.

Bleh, just trading hoops.

Heh, 5 boards for Speights, all offensive.

How about a strong finish to this quarter, huh?

Asking too much.

Hawes back in. Nice drive by Jrue.

Ugh, when you kick the ball up the court, isn't that a kicked ball?

Jrue dribbled the ball onto the foot lol. Even if that is against the rules you can't complain about it.

Back-to-back turnovers for Jrue.

Big three for Iguodala.

Why does Thad never guard Andrea when he shoots that three? He's always playing off him.

PHI 50, TOR 50 at the half. The Sixers made a nice run to come all the way back and take the lead, then just traded hoops the rest of the quarter.

I'd love to see a 20/10 game for Jrue, just hope he doesn't have 8 turnovers to go with it.

Yes, I posted that before the final 3.3 seconds.

Turnovers don't count according to John Wall. He's averaging 4 per game lol.

Would also love to see speights get a 34/10 game.

You know that Zach Randolph has had 3 or 4 of those this year? An underappreciated season.

Nothing motivates like an expiring contract. Odds whoever signs/extends him regrets it?

He was about this good last season too though.

Nice find by Jrue, nice shot by Lou. Corner three.

Wasn't supposed to be a reply here. Anyway, so you think whoever signs him won't regret it?

user-pic

Um... he is getting older, and if he went to a bad team he'd definitely regress. It depends on the years and money.

I think Gasol will be more dissapointing than Z-Bo.

No big surprises here, but check out cumulative +/- for the team:

http://www.nba.com/statistics/plusminus/plusminus_sort.jsp?pcomb=1&season=22010&split=9&team=76ers

Not surprised to see Hawes and Nocioni in the basement (though I'm surprised Nocioni is worse). Jrue Holiday and Thaddeus Young our MVPs of 2011 so far.

David Aldridge is talking about how it benefits the league to see the Hornets win, since they own the team, and how that really doesn't look good when they employ the refs as well. Sticky situation.

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 20:23
+/-

Trades are a really sticky situation. All the teams would freak out if NO made a significant move, but they probably should be looking at making a major move or two.

Is it too much to ask for Collins to completely lose his shit in the locker room and motivate these guys to blow their doors off in the second half?

ugh. Hawes got about a half-inch off the floor. That should've been a dunk.

Jrue's short game looks good tonight.

Someone make a gif of that please.

Meeks, you really need to hit those. Nice o-board and layup for Jrue.

Tray hates these announcers because they love Jrue :)

Heh, was that DeRozan that fell down?

Sissy hook.

Heh. Not sure that behind-the-back pass was really needed, but it was pretty.

Man, has Meeks ever made one of those driving layups?

Why didn't Lou make a play on Weems on that break? WTF? He had the angle, could've given the foul. Iguodala shouldn't have stopped after the strip, either. They clearly weren't calling the foul.

Nice. Getting out in transition, another corner three for Lou.

F me. Hawes picked Jrue on that play, the TOR player wasn't even near him.

Lou is on fire from deep. 3 3's this quarter.

This is just pretty offensive basketball. Assists on 7 straight makes for the Sixers.

PHI 84, TOR 77 after three. Defense really fell off once the starters came out, but good quarter offensively.

Turner needs to quit helping off DeRozen.

Jrue has 14, 5 and 9 and he isn't even in the running for player of the game.

Iggy's Achilles seems better.

Pretty find by Turner for the Speights lob/dunk.

I love this announcer.

Wow, Speights is an animal tonight.

He should get a start as a reward for this effort.

Well, he'll at least get a free Mo Speezy article by Hollinger.

Sick pass by Turner to Thad! Turner has serious passing skills. He's going to be a force in this league.

I've noticed the past few games that the guys seem to actually enjoy playing together. Like they're all engaged finally.

Lou has been good tonight, but he deserves a hook for those last two possessions.

"Even tho they aint perfect I'm ridin wit my #sixers rite now Win,lose or draw!"

Heh, that AI9 EB two-man game is like taking candy from a baby.

And Jrue puts the final nail in the coffin on the defensive end. Steal, fouled, clear path.

Jrue just closed this game out.

Lou literally dribbled the air out of the ball that time, :)

I wanna see this.

Should the Sixers offer the QA to Thad Young next year? I would do it, but I'm not sure Thad would since he would probably get a nice contract this season from another team. If we can get an athletic center and a decent SG, I say we have the potential to be a top 4 team in the Eastern Conference.

Well, they'll make the qualifying offer no matter what. If they don't, they give up his restricted free agency, they can't use the Larry Bird exception to re-sign him, and he's an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with anyone for any amount.

Whether he'll sign the QO is another matter. I'd guess that someone will offer him something, so the Sixers either need to get him to agree to an extension here before that happens, or they'll have 7 days to match whatever offer someone else gives him, or they can work out a sign-and-trade, or he just goes to that team.

user-pic
Steven reply to Brian on Jan 26 at 22:30

What kind of contract do you think he'll get? What kind of contract do you think he deserves? I was thinking 6-7 mill, but that's too much for a bench player especially when he we're paying Lou Will the same amount of money. I love his role off the bench. I think he'll get too good of an offer that we can't match. If Amir Johnson and Drew Gooden can get 30+ mill contracts than I don't know why Thad can't get better.

If we can get Thad for 6-7mil, it's a no-brainer in my opinion, gotta re-sign him. Travis Outlaw got 7mil a year and he's terrible. I think the Sixers need to work as hard as they can to keep Thad, he's a 22-year old athletic phenom. Letting him go creates hardly any cap space, and regardless, who could we get to replace Thad? No one. Keep him here.

If only Mo Speights could play like this consistently, he could be a very good power forward (and part time center)

The sixers would have a chance of making it out of the first round if Speights played like this.

No - they wouldn't - defense counts in the playoffs - and Speights doesn't play it.

Outside of Chicago and slightly orlando, I don't think that's too big of a problem. No chance in hell they get past the bulls, and probably neither the celtics based on how well rounded they are. Still they are capable, like 15-20% chance, of beating the magic and heat imo. Maybe even higher than that if Speights was able to provide Offense and Rebounds.

Kendrick Perkins and the two o'neals

Speights had one good game against an incredibly shitty and soft defensive front court - let's not expect him to play like that (even with effort) every night.

Shaq and perkins going to take advantage of Speights offensively? Also neither O'neal can guard Speights, no chance.

Also, i am no way expecting Speights to play like this going forward, nor do i expect him to get minutes. But I like to entertain the idea :).

After todays game, or the game vs the suns, the sixers point differential is now positive.
