I watched the YES broadcast of that game, and even the Yankees' commentators agreed that Phelps was out of line when he took out the Mariners' catcher. Yeah, Phelps didn't know where the ball was necessarily, but the catcher was also five feet up the line, and Phelps went after him anyway.

The Yankees' guys were saying he could have easily slid in and been safe without bowling the catcher over, because he had a clear path to the plate (which is true).

I'm not against taking catchers out, but this one appeared completely unnecessary.

I saw the replay, from my point of view I don't have a problem with it. I can see how the Mariners did, however, so I also don't have a problem with them hitting Phelps. That's the way it works.

Proctor shouldn't have thrown at Betancourt. Either way you look at it, the score was even.
