Game 5 Thread: PHI @ NOH

I couldnt Agree more that this is a must win. Starting off the season at 4-2 coming into your home opener against an atrocious Pistons team is much better than being 3-3. I think EB will have a better game, but not something extrordinary and I think Jrue will give Jack fits on the defensive end. Also, with Ariza out who is the wing that will be gaurding Iggy??

It's going to be either 3-2 or 2-3 after tonight. They're 2-2 now. I guess Aminu will be guarding Iguodala.

Is Belinelli still starting at point? If he is, then can they trust Meeks on the ball? I sure wouldn't. I would give Meeks a chance to get hot early and if he doesn't then bring in Turner to solidify the perimeter.

You might as well erase Ariza. I heard he wasn't playing.

Gordon participated in shootaround but is questionable for tonight.

I wonder if they'd put Iguodala on Gordon. Meeks on Aminu isn't a favorable crossmatch. Maybe Jrue on Gordon and Meeks on Jack.

A clarification: Sixers will get Memphis' second-round pick in 2012 only if Grizzlies don't finish as one of top five NBA teams in regular season. It's a long shot, but Sixers would get nothing from Memphis if it cracks top five. "It's a one-shot deal," said Rod Thorn via email.

Can't really fathom why Thorn would agree to such a condition, but whatever, it's a worthless pick anyway. I'm just happy for Speights to get a chance to play somewhere else, once you enter Collins' doghouse you never get out.

Love the game thread picture for the Hornets ;)

I'm hyped tonight for Sixer basketball. Would like to see alot of pressure put on Jarret Jack, early and often.

Well, looks like my first game of the year will be the Sixers third game in three nights. Sixers @ Knicks next Weds.

Wow, Sixers broadcast in HD on League Pass. That only happens once or twice a season.

Collins on the Speights trade: "It's never fun losing someone you care about." and won't play even in a blowout.

"Happy Lou Year!" - Zumoff

@preston76: Nik Vucevic is out for tonight's game with a left lumbar back strain, which he suffered pre-game. No timetable has been set for his return

i guess we'll see some battie tonight?

yea i guess

Either that or an 8-man rotation. With three days off I'd bet on the 8-man rotation, actually.

guess it depends on how close the game's gonna be.

Vucevic is injured tonight....right when we trade Speights.

dont use but i see alot of people on twitter saying they are having problems with it

OK, usual starting lineup. They're saying Battie might get some burn.

Meeks on Gordon. Early foul.

And we're off.

Hawes loses the tap.

Meeks on Gordon, fouls him immediately. I hate that decision, put either Jrue or Iguodala on him.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:12
+/-

Well Jrue, might ought to not let Jack blow by you like that ...

Jrue to the line on first offensive possession. Love it. Hated his lazy D on the other end on their first possession, though.

Ugh, hate that shot by AI9.

Hawes, nothing but net. Assist to Jrue.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:15

Hawes with the uber-limp wrist jumper. Swish! heh

Meeks gets abused. Get him off Gordon, please.

Get Meeks out of the game.

user-pic
Court_visioN on Jan 4 at 20:16

Hawes continues his hot shooting

Maybe just get Meeks out of the game altogether. What was that drive?

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:16
+/-

Got to get Meeks out of there. Or off of Gordon one.

Jrue starting hot.

Pretty pocket pass to Brand for the assist. Get some stops, please.

Meeks is getting eaten alive.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:18
+/-

Jodie's too straight up, he has to get crouched lower if he's going to even attempt to stay w/ Gordon.

user-pic
Court_visioN on Jan 4 at 20:18
+/-

Jrue distributing well early

Switched AI9 onto Gordon, he pretty much stopped the drive, but the dish led to a foul.

user-pic
Court_visioN on Jan 4 at 20:19
+/-

c'mon Hawes, don't need to help Iguodala that far out like that. Gives up an easy inside pass to Landry, stops the basket with a foul.

Hawes off on the 22-footer. Keep an eye on whether he keeps shooting those. He should've swung the ball.

sissy hook

user-pic
South Broad on Jan 4 at 20:21
+/-

Why does League Pass show a Cox Sports HD broadcast but only put it on an SD channel on DirecTV? Score caption below the screen, that's good.

Nice. Hawes got Landry on him, backed him down and sissy hooked him.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:22

They have way more energy than us at the moment. We look out of sorts.

Terrible, terrible start on the defensive end.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:23
+/-

Surely to be some subs out of this timeout.

Bench brigade is going to need to bring some energy here.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:25
+/-

Subbed Meeks and EB out for Lou and Thad.

Jrue on Gordon now, Lou on Jack, and Jack blows by Lou for a layup.

Jrue's increasing reliance on the long two is starting to become a concern.

Next time Thad shoots a contested jumper when being guarded by Kaman he should be benched immediately.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:27
+/-

Dre out, ET in, Jrue remains.

Great D by Jrue on Gordon there, but they wind up switching and he hits a two over Hawes. This isn't looking good. Not good at all.

Man, just can't switch on that pick, jrue.

Yep, after he did a great job of cutting off Gordon's penetration on the same play. Ugh.

Brian's dream matchup: Kaman v. Hawes.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 20:29
+/-

Same kind of start versus the Jazz.

Thad still thinks he can shoot

The Sixers have 2 rebounds. 2.

Third time this season we've seen Collins yelling at Turner on his way back to the bench from a timeout for absolutely no reason.

Heh, absolutely no reason? You know what their defensive rotations were supposed to be on that last play? He was yelling at him because he wanted him to go double.

Is he the only Sixer to have made any mistakes this year? Collins hasn't yelled at anyone else like that, while he's now done it 3 times to Turner with his trademark scowl.

Got me. That's the first time I've seen him yelling at anyone.

Is Turner too fragile to handle being yelled at? Jesus.

My point isn't that he's too fragile. My point is that once again Collins singles him out for shi**y treatment.

user-pic

LOL memphis announcer just called Thad a jumpshooter.

horrible quarter

PHI 16, NOH 27 after one. Terrible quarter.

Jrue needs to take the ball to the hole every time he has Vazquez defending him. No excuses to settle for long twos. Vazquez can't stop dribble penetration.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 21:06

They're lucky it's only 7. Andre and Spencer will be key with the tight rotation tonight.

PHI 40, NOH 47 at the half.

Much better second quarter, but still not good enough.

Turner is in the lead for POTG, but Brand's rebounding was a big reason for the improved play in the second Q. Jrue with a solid first half (9 pts, 4 asts, 0 tov)

user-pic
Johnnylaptop on Jan 4 at 21:09
+/-

Sombody tell Spence he has a game tonight.

Ricky Rubio has 8 assists at the half.

Minnesota only has 14 made field goals.

Kids the real deal. Then again, after watching him extensively the past 4 years, I never doubted his game would translate.

Is it safe to assume he will start soon? I haven't seen him play yet but I would bet that he's better than Ridnour.

I'm not sure it really matters. He's played virtually every 4th quarter minute so far for the Wolves (in fact, he may have played all 12 every game). They may just keep him in this role to keep his comfort level, although I don't think he needs it.

Shooting and the FT line were the big problems in the first half (.417 EFG for us, .282 FT rate for them, only .119 for us).

Bellineck Beard wanted no part of ET on an earlier drive. That's a good matchup. Meeks not looking good and especially didn't like his step-back (I think) revengen jumper when Gordon owned him. Gotta keep Dre or E.T. on Gordon imo.

Mullens is killing the Knicks Lmaooo

Charlotte has 88 points in the third quarter, and that's even with the Maggette handicap.

Gordon wound up having a pretty pedestrian first half, once they got Meeks off of him. 5/11 for 12 points (2 FTs)

user-pic

user-pic

Ha! Spencer with two straight blocks. Get up big fella!

DeMar DeRozan 5/8 from deep today. Even if they were all wide open that's wuite a turnaround from last season.

His midrange game started to turn around last year. His jumper has continued to improve, he's just extended the range a bit.

3 blocks on that possession for the Sixers. Brand x 1, Hawes x 2. Come on now, big run.

God damnit, if you aren't going to hit that, what good are you?

Completely blew that comeback. Why is he using this dumb lineup?

Good job, Turner.

And then he loses his man for a corner three.

He pretty much had to rotate on that because Brand went to help.

If the Sixers lose this, it's squarely on Doug. No reason for Meeks to still be in the game.

user-pic

ET scores nicely. But gives more back by lagging off too far from his guy in the corner for 3. ugh

PHI 67, NOH 73 after three. Great energy, great run to take the led back, then completely pissed it away. I have no idea why Meeks played that entire quarter, he was terrible on the defensive end and hit one shot on offense. Makes no sense to me.

We should see Jrue and Iguodala for the entire fourth.

Spencer took over that 3rd quarter. Jrue took over the 4th. Evan kept us in it in the second along with EB's boards. Tough choice.

I'd have to go with Spencer in a close call.

Hell of a confident Jrue there in that fourth though, maybe he'll come out like that back at home. Funk be over, please.

Jrue gets it for the ice in his veins, plus 8 assists, 0 turnovers.

Turner and Iggy shut down Gorden in the 4th.

I asked for 60 in the second half. They're at 58 right now.

PHI 101, NOH 93 FINAL.

Huge fourth, absolutely huge fourth quarter. Big win. They put it away with huge shots by Jrue and suffocating defense. Great game.

Exciting second half and fourth quarter. 3-2 on the road trip works (and so close to 4-1 but the 3 wins by decent margins).

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 4 at 22:26

Pessimism time - got to come out of the gates better when they get home. Just too much of an uphill climb with these holes they're digging early. Like tonight, they were swarming on D in the 4th, if they play half like that in the 1st and 2nd we annihilate these guys.

Interested to see what Lou pipes in the mic after the game. He was not pleased at all and probably has a right to not be. Think he had something like 10+ pts in 3 of 4 fourth quarters so far.

Lou needs to trust his coach. For whatever reason, he liked what he had on the floor.

While the Sixers are the only team to not play a home game, I'd take that over Dallas' early schedule. They'll play their 8th game tomorrow.

Jason Kidd is killing me on my dynasty hoops team.

THAT is J/T/I.

If Jrue can dial it in like that from distance, there is ZERO reason why ET can't run the offense and Jrue can be the deep-ball threat. Iguodala just has to learn to get his within the flow of the offense and not force things.

Can Hawes keep playing anything close to this level for the next 5 months?

I still want Jrue to run the point but I like having one or two other ball handlers out there with him, takes the pressure off him a litttle.

They were pretty much taking turns there in the fourth. Really fluid offense, other than the jacked three by Iguodala.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Jan 4 at 22:34

Exactly. They are all really good, high IQ basketball players so there is no reason they can't make it work with different lineups.

Hawes has not had very tough match ups so far this season. Monroe will be a good test to see if this is the real Hawes or a mirage.

Sixers OFR in the second half was 140.63. I can't begin to explain to you how amazing that is.

The pace of this game was actually slower than the Hornets usually play (86 possessions and change). Pretty amazing turnaround in the second half.

Sixers: 4-1 against the spread, 5-0 on team OVERs in points. Great great win.

the numbers might not show it but it seemed like brand had his best game of the year

Fun game especially coming out with the W. I saw flashes of old Lou and am glad DC went with Turner. Also glad he put AI and ET on Turner to cool him down - 22 on 22 after a crazy first quarter for him. Biggest difference tonight was that Collins didn't exclusively run the Hawes Handoff offense and let Jrue and ET set up the O. I'm sticking what I've contended previously: ET is the best halfcourt player on the team. JTI showed up well tonight andn in proper order: JT as options 1-2 and I in transiton/hustle/D.

This is why I like Iguodala He plays like crap on offense but still has a good overall game.

At the beginning of the second DC switched Dre onto Eric Gordon, with ET picking him up on and off from there. The split:

First quarter: 5-6, 11 pts
Rest of the game: 3-16, 11 pts

Dre was putrid offensively, but he also took the other team's best player, who was hot, and just ate him up.

Meeks was on him for quite a while in the 3rd from what I recall.

steph curry sprained his ankle again

I know this is only going to add fuel to the fire, but honestly only one Sixer had a bad game, and his play was responsible for a lot of the problems the team had the entire night. And for some reason, Doug went with him for the entire third quarter.

So does Collins start to think about putting turner in the starting lineup?

Depends. I think Meeks' shot will start falling soon. It's not really who is starting but who is closing out. JTI should be used in the fourth quarter for defense, and this is where Turner's role will grow. Meeks doesn't work well with Lou or Thad, and this would weaken the bench - one of the strongest aspects of the team.

user-pic
Stan reply to Jeff on Jan 4 at 23:25

"Meeks doesn't work well with Lou or Thad"

Which was why I was scratching my head in the 3rd quarter. Hopefully it was just a brain fart on Collin's part

Disagree. Third game this year we've had to climb out of a deep hole caused by starter ineptitude. It's a problem, you can't keep doing that. I expect to see Turner starting on Friday.

I understand your frustration, but youre basing it off of incredibly small sample size. If Meeks is still struggling ten or so games into the season i`d expect a starting lineup change.

I said last year that he should be cut, and I said this year that he should be cut. Not basing it on the small sample size but instead basing it on his lack of basketball talent. Even at his best, he can't pass, dribble, or defend. He hasn't a semblance of a mid-range game. His best is as a barely 40% 3-point specialist, which is mediocre for a 3-point specialist. And that's his best. I honestly believe that if you release him, he won't even get picked up by another NBA team.

i see. So it`s more of a personal grudge than reality. I didnt know there was a such thing as a mediocre three-point specialist. Just one question, how did you manage to have beer goggles on for Spence last year but no love for Jodie?

Because I was right, as we've seen this year.

Most people would claim that 81 games is a much more accurate sample size than 5 games, but you seem to turn a blind eye to this logic.

Just curious- the top 3 seeds are division winners regardless of the record for non division teams, right?

user-pic
bebopdeluxe reply to stan on Jan 4 at 23:22
+/-

No...the three division winners are guaranteed a top 4 seeding, but the number 2 seed can be a non-division winner if they have a better record than the other two division winners.

Also, if a division winner is pushed down to the 4 seed and the 5 seed has a better record, the 5 seed gets home court.

I am okay with Thad mixing in jumpers to his game, but pick your spots. They had nobody who could stay in front of him tonight and he drove as a last resort.

One dynamic I noticed tonight is when Turner is out there with Thad, his player backs off and Thad seems to get less easy looks.

W/ Meeks on Gordon in 1st and 3rd quarter: 6/8, 17 points.

When Meeks was out of the game: 2/14, 5 points.

So do you think what he brings to the court offensively is enough of a balance to keep him in the stating lineup? I think we have trailed in every game but one this season in the first quarter.

user-pic
Court_visioN reply to Brian on Jan 5 at 0:16

the way Meeks has been playing I'm honestly starting to wonder if Nocioni could play that role better.

They haven't named a new mascot yet right? Perhaps Jodie...???

Meeks is playing exactly how turner played early last season that led to him getting benched

Meeks is playing worse than that, but he's got some time behind him which gives him more rope than a rookie who's never played in the league. He's not going to shoot less than 20% from three for the whole year, he's just ice cold right now, and the rest of his game isn't good enough to cover for him when he isn't doing his one specialty.

Poor Jodie. I always said he was barely an NBA player.

Tonight, Demarcus, of all people, was the model of efficiency, with 26 points in 25 minutes on 12 shots, 16 possessions. Also had 3 steals, 3 blocks - and fouled out. Rubio had 12 points and 10 assists in a loss, made both his threes. Bismack played 4 minutes, fouled someone. Greg Monroe had 19, 13 and 5. LeBron, playing without Wade, had 33, 8 and 13.

didnt cousins get most of his points in garbage time?

Eh, they all count. Give him credit for an efficient game.
