Sixers

, all the time

Wade has been announced out for tonight, so is Spencer I believe

This is one of those games that I don't expect them to win, I just want them to keep it close, and no weak ass first quarter no shows please

I agree about Lou being key in this game. I'd actually add Meeks on that list. Both won't hurt the team as much as usual on D because really all they need to do is not let their guys be wide open for three. And on the other end lets hope they can score enough to make a difference.

Hey gents (and ladies?), this is stoned81 under a less harmful screen name (just in case my anonymity gets lost one day). Honestly have no idea why I picked stoned81 a couple years ago, I don't get stoned, but whatever, I've finally corrected that mistake (not that this new screen name is much better, but at least it doesn't have bad implications other than maybe dropping my beer at a bar on occasion).

I was pleasantly wrong about yesterday's game, thought it was a sure loss, instead it was the 11th blowout. Tonight I think we start poorly, struggle back, keep it within 5 in the final quarter, and get our 5th close-game loss. Unfortunately close games are going to continue to be our downfall, I'm afraid. I can't see us blowing out Miami, and I can't see us winning a close game, so the only option for me is Miami victory.

Your mouth to God's ear, Brian. I like 103-102...although I have a hard time seeing the Sixers win if the Heat score over 100.

Big game for Jrue, the Heat are going to hound him, to turn the ball over. Jrue needs to strike first, be aggressive, pass well, finish strong at the rim. Will need our 3 point game tonight. Would like to see Evan Turner get going early and often tonight. Expecting Iggy to be good Iggy tonight, stepping up for the challenge. Can't wait for the game, I think this game is winnable.

user-pic

Agree that this is a big game for Jrue. I think he's up for the challenge and predict a big game for him tonight on both ends of the floor.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Jan 21 at 17:36

Take a herculean effort tonight, if for no other reason than the energy required to come back in last night's game. Be nice if Meeks can pick up where he left off last year in the 1st @MIA game, that was his very unexpected coming out party. He was on fire. What will the staff pull out of the hat to protect the rim though? Like to see NO unchallenged shots at the rim, give hard fouls every single time, make them earn it at the line. Use up Battie's and Vuc's fouls wisely.

Imperative they stay home or rotate quickly out to Mike Miller, James Jones, or even Chalmers. Don't let them stretch out leads or cut into leads by hitting from deep.

Hold them to less than 20 pts from behind the arc (6 threes or less) and it'll be a sweet plane ride home.

Oh, and don't settle so much for perimeter J's in the early going. Please. Ball movement will be key if penetrating lanes are closed off.

Yeah, I'd say that bit about the six threes is definitely wrong. That's what Miami averages. (They're very accurate, but they take very few, just 24th in the league.) If holding them to six threes was the recipe for beating them, and they averaged six threes, you'd think they wouldn't be 10-4.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Tray on Jan 21 at 19:28
+/-

They haven't played the Sixers yet, that's why it's the recipe. Their averages and who they've played and how they've fared has zilch to do with tonight's game or opponent.

Um why is that, because unlike all the other teams they've played, we have a unique ability to prevent Miami from scoring inside the arc, and/or a unique ability to score so much that we are guaranteed a win if we hold them to six threes?

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Tray on Jan 21 at 19:37
+/-

It was nothing more than a barometer that I think we need to keep them below to pull out a W, not a right/wrong prediction or anything, nothing more nothing less. geez, feelings can be expressed without statistical overkill...

No, actually you said that if we held them to six threes, we'd win. Now you're saying it's a necessary but not sufficient condition to our winning, which is something entirely different. I don't agree with either; I figure that we could lose with them making 5 threes and win with them making ten.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Tray on Jan 21 at 19:44
+/-

Great.

I really think this game is not predictable. The outcome depends too much on players having a good/bad night.

In 10 wins the Heat shot:
FG% .507, 3PT% .429, FT% .766

In 4 losses the Heat shot:
FG% .447, 3PT% .339, FT% .656

user-pic
Phil reply to Phil on Jan 21 at 17:52
+/-

2 of the 4 losses came in OT, they're were only blown out by Denver. That's why their shooting numbers are not that bad in losses.

You really have to close out on their shooters. They have so many to throw at you (Chalmers, Battier, Jones, Miller, ...).

To be honest, there's nothing to lose tonight. Play hard, give them a good fight and we even may sneak out with a win.

user-pic
Tray reply to Phil on Jan 21 at 18:34

On which players does it depend? Because if it depends on LeBron, it's pretty predictable that 80% of the time he'll have a great night.

Sunday column (with Holiday, Brand video interviews): Sixers have a chance to pile up some more victories:

user-pic

The Sixers' 11 wins have been against teams with a combined 57-110 record (34.1 percent), while their four losses have been to teams that are 35-25 (58.3 percent).

user-pic
Tray reply to Tom Moore on Jan 21 at 18:47
+/-

Does that count the losses and wins they had against us? I don't think that it should. At the extreme, that's like saying, if you beat a 1-0 team and they drop to 1-1, "oh, they were only a .500 team." Though here it doesn't make that much difference - supposing it does count the losses they had against us, taking those out would only make them a combined 57-99, or 36.5%.

user-pic
Tom Moore on Jan 21 at 18:46

The Sixers are 3-3 when trailing by at least 10 points (the deficit was 11 in the second quarter Friday) after ending up 5-27 when down double digits last season.

user-pic
Dwight reply to Tom Moore on Jan 21 at 18:49
+/-

And all 3 of those losses were winnable games and came down to the last possession.

I say let Iguodala guard Lebron alone, it doesnt matter if he explodes, just keep the three point shooters out of the three point line. I doubt Lebron can beat the Sixers alone.

Also, Bosh has had a ton of good games against the Sixers. Wonder if they can find a solution this year.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Xsago on Jan 21 at 18:55
+/-

agree on Bosh. Hope he isn't knocking down that 15-17 footer tonight with ease. It seems to be open a lot for him when playing vs us. Don't know if that's Brand playing off so far or just not challenging quick enough.

One thing I forgot in the preview. It's going to be a major key for the Sixers to weather Miami's first big run. It happened in pretty much every game in the playoffs last night, and I've seen it in every game I've watched this season. They're going to have a stretch where their defense powers a huge run, it's like a frenzy (pretty similar to some Sixers runs, actually), they need to slow down when that's happening, Collins needs to use his timeout, and they need to minimize it as much as they can. Easier said than done, but a 15-0 run won't kill you, a 35-10 run will. Just be prepared for it, and run smart offense right through it.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Jan 21 at 18:56
+/-

looking at you Jrue (on the slow down reference)

One final thing, if you get the ball in the open floor, just dunk it. Hard. Don't let LeBron get one of those cheap chase down blocks because you went up soft for a layup.

And one other thing, Collins said in his post game presser that Nocioni might get some burn tonight. For the love of God, please don't let me see Nocioni on LeBron for even a second tonight.

Hmmn, so Chalmers, Jones, LeBron, Bosh, Anthony. Jrue has a mismatch on the offensive end, he can take Chalmers. I assume they'll cross match up front, so Anthony on Brand. This is probably better for the Sixers than Battier in there, Jodie just needs to keep himself glued to Jones at the three-point line.

12 minutes. Can't wait for this one to get started.

Wow, tuned in for Atlanta-Cleveland for a minute and i am suddenly extremely happy with the Sixers attendance. That place is like ghost town. And remember Atlanta is a pretty good team.

I thought you were going to talk about how easy it looks for Joe Johnson when he doesn't have Iguodala draped all over him :)

user-pic
Tray reply to Brian on Jan 21 at 19:31
+/-

Incidentally, if you ever feel like reading a really well-written, smart NBA blog by a guy who hates his team and how it's run, see hoopinionblog.com. On their loss to us:

The Hawks shot the ball poorly and rebounded worse (or vice-versa, I wouldn't argue the particulars) but those are both single-game risks inherent with this roster, built around jump shooters and reflecting a long-held, institutional belief that rebounding is not a skill.... If you're going to have fewer than 90 offensive possessions a game and you're going to use 26 of those possessions on long, two-point jump shots, then you're going to have nights where you struggle to score and put tremendous pressure on your performance in the other three factors.

Atlanta is a CRAPPY sports town - too many transients

Dirk Nowitzki out the next four games for to 'improve conditioning' - that's such a nice way to say unprepared to play the season physically :)

Think it's more the knee problem than conditioning, though one could certainly be responsible for the other.

user-pic
Dwight reply to GoSixers on Jan 21 at 19:36

Yeah Dirk is one of the hardest workers out there. I highly doubt it has something to do with him not being prepared.

Miami's sweater vest warmups are great.

Ugh, I guess the Heat are one of those teams with like actual local advertisers. Late start, probably longer commercial breaks as well.

I'm kind of hoping I get a chance to write a headline like, "Sixers Sink Heat Ship" after a win, but I guess that would be in bad taste.

thoughts on the throwback uniforms?

And we're off...Vucevic loses another tip. And the Heat look like the Flynt Tropics in their throwbacks.

Voose on Bosh on first possession, good D and the board.

AI9 to the Voose. I'll give LeBron that shot.

Put Thad in if EB's not gonna go out to cover Bosh.

It looks like the same game plan as yesterday. But Bosh is much better at that shot than Josh Smith is.

Bosh is 34% on long twos this year.

I feel its in our favor if Anthony continues to take more shots than Lebron

All the Sixers shots are coming in the lane (except the Jodie three), Heat are hitting a lot of jumpers. Things will even out if the attempts stay like that.

This is actually a fairly encouraging start. We're getting good shots.

14-6 run to end it

PHI 28, MIA 29 after 1.

Really great quarter. Miami was living on the perimeter, the Sixers were attacking. If they play three more quarters w/ that shot selection by both teams, the Sixers will win by 10+.

user-pic
Dwight reply to Brian on Jan 21 at 20:10

Yeah but all of their perimeter shots were wide open.

Doesn't matter. Open 20 footers aren't as good as shots in the lane.

I like how Turner is showing up in these big games. He's a big time player.

Now let's see if we can get back the lead with LBJ on the bench. Very good game so far.

What is it about the Heat that usually has Evan Turner balling much better?

Great job by the team to come back from 9 points down to trail by 1 after 1. As long as we're close in the fourth it should be fun.

Great early comeback. Heat hitting everything so far. We need some more stops, but Vucevic and Turner are keeping us in the game. This team is so fun to watch, because it's playing as one every night...

Ugh, don't like that shot by Turner. Keep attacking.

Turner said after ATL that he can get anywhere on the court and I believe. Lou passing up drifting fading two's is a good sign. Brand is back to being a consistent workhorse inside. Also Turner is really active on D, can tell he's learning from Dre.

Two on Thad.

Bosh is too good.

So many looks for Vucevic in the paint, I wish it was Brand getting those looks. Or Thad for that matter.

Not a big fan of a 13-6 run for MIA w/ LeBron on the bench here to start the quarter.

Heat hitting everything and bad defense from the sixers right now. We won't be long in this game if it continues like that.

Turner is playing great right now.

PHI 49, MIA 56 at the half.

Strange second quarter. Thought the defense was worse, offense was better. Turner really looks great, Voose as well. No one else has really been a factor on the offensive end. They let Miami get way too many OREBs in that quarter, and their shots were coming closer to the hoop. Need a strong third quarter.

I like the Voose activity this game.

Thank God for Turner, huh?

That being said, Iguodala should be on LBJ every minute of the 2nd Half. Let him do what he's good at.

Doug is his worse enemy.

He seems to do a great job making the team respectable and getting in the playoffs, but he doesn't seem to know what plays to run when the game is close, and I am bewildered by how he a) benched Turner for that long stretch in the third, and b) played Lavoy Allen. Way too much Lavoy out there.

Miami shot really, really well tonight. The Sixers didn't play well, but I think on a normal night for both teams they are five points away. They played so goddamn well, and although Turner was very very good tonight (Earth to Doug, Can't play Jodie and Lou together that long), he is at a severe mismatch against LeBron. Dre should in theory be on him the whole time.

How do people expect the Sixers to match up to the Heat? We have no one one our team who can guard LeBron or Bosh. No one who can guard Wade. They have great shooters in Jones and Miller. Great defenders in Battier and Haslem. And a great role player in Chalmers.

This is clearly the best team in the league. I expect them to finish first in the East and have the best record in the NBA.

Why are you caught up in everyone's expectations? Your team loses and you are disappointed. Is there something abnormal about that?

Whats up with Lavoy not even trying when he was in there? He got some early non garbage time minutes. No boxing out just watching the ball.No wonder he has not gotten real minutes.

user-pic
Tray reply to GabeCash on Jan 21 at 22:16

I believe this was the rap on him in college. Sensible use of a second round draft pick.

Just a sick, sick feeling after this game. It feels worse than a 30 point defeat.

- Is Jrue ever going to show any form of consistency? He was great against Atlanta, yes. And then he looks much worse than Mario Chalmers tonight.
- Is Doug ever gonna stop hating on Turner?
- When Vuc got hurt and we had Lavoy Allen in there it made me wonder how serious the front office is about trying to build a winning team. We have almost no front court and they're not even trying to sign anybody.
- When Jrue plays like that we see how limited Iggy is offensively, and we cannot get anything going on halfcourt unless Lou/Evan/both are out there.
- Meeks. We can maybe win a round of the playoffs, but that is as far as this team can realistically go with a guy like Meeks starting and playing this many minutes. Just saying.

I'm calling it a night early. My wrap will be up some time tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your Saturday, folks. Hopefully Monday will be better.

Amare with ZERO shots in both OT's?

This keeps up, and D'Antoni won't make it through the season.

This keeps up and I'm not sure he makes it past the all-star game - despite two guys on his roster making the team, since they're super-duper stars.

By the way, Love was 5-21 tonight, 5-16 last night, and 7-20 the game before that, for a total of 17-57 over the last three games. 29% shooting on a healthy 19 shots a game, a FG% of 41.3% on the year, and a .545 TS%. A good player, but I think I'd rather rebuild if that's our superstar acquirement backup plan.

What does a 3 game stretch mean when you have a player who has a career .564 true shooting percentage over 229 games?

Nothing, except this. One, I think his low efficiency is a function of his high usage, and that if he came here his usage would be just as high. This is a player who, for three years, had usage ratings in the 21-22% range, because for three years, he was treated as a second option behind Jefferson and then, even more stupidly, behind Beasley. Now as a first option his usage is up to 28%, which is high but not even that high, and his efficiency is way down this season. Not only is there this stretch, but all sorts of games like it throughout the season, and overall he's shooting 41% from the field, which is remarkably low for a power forward. Now, if you brought him here I'd have to think his usage rate would be just as high, as he'd easily be our first option, and I suspect his efficiency wouldn't be so great.

Point 2 is that Love had a .538 TS% his rookie year, a .549 TS% his second year, a .593 TS% his third year, and a .541 TS% this year so far with increased usage. As you point out it all averages out to a solid number, but one could easily argue that the third year was an outlier, and it wouldn't be hard to pinpoint the cause - a career .354 three-point shooter in college who was 2-19 his rookie year and shot 33% his second year suddenly made 41.7% of his threes in his third season, and a career 77% free-throw shooter in college who shot 79% and 81% his first two seasons shot 85% in his third season. This year, he's shooting 35% and 80% respectively, and with his less than textbook form that seems more likely to be his natural level. Otherwise, if you look at what's happening with shot locations, nothing much else sticks out. He's down to 57% around the rim from 60% last year, but that's actually an improvement on his first two seasons, where he shot 55%; again it's last year that looks like the outlier. He's shooting an unsustainably low 30% from 3-9 feet, whereas in the past he's shot 40%, but he only takes two shots from there a game so that's a difference of just one make every five games. He's taking about one more low-percentage long two a game this season, which you'd expect as he becomes more of a volume scorer, and he's shooting them just as well as last season. The big difference is that his three-point shooting is down, and his accuracy at the line is down from last year's career high 85% to 80% - around where he was both in college and in his first two years in the league. The other big difference is that he's taking way more threes, but that's actually what's keeping his TS% from plummeting - since he's not a good finisher, his efg% on threes is way higher than his efg% inside the arc.

Well, assuming the snapshot you chose to take after three bad games very early in the season is an accurate look at what Love would be with a 28% usage rate for a full year, which I don't buy as an accurate look, why would he need to have a super-high usage rate if he came to the Sixers? Are the Sixers devoid of other players who can score efficiently like Minnesota is?

I don't think there'd be any reason for Love's usage to be up above 25% if the Sixers were to sign him, same with Dwight Howard, really. That should be part of the draw for a star to come to Philly, they wouldn't be stepping into a situation where they'd have to do it all on their own.

I didn't watch the Knicks game. Did Dano become an allpro defender? Carmelo Atnhony- 25 points on 30 shots.

I'm not really mad about the loss, it felt like the Heat hit long two pointer after long two pointer. Bosh especially was red hot on his jumper and on an average night this is a completely different game.

Any way i think Vucevic and Turner played really well tonight. I'm glad Vucevic appears to be fine, i was scared after seeing him go down. An injury would've destroyed all the good this solid start of his career has done. And Turner really shows enough to make you wonder what he can be if he gets a 35min a night and becomes a focal point of the offense.

I am starting ti get really worried about Jrue. this year he has transformed himself into Mario Chalmers. That ain't gonna cut it. If he keeps playing like that he is not important to the future of this team.

I thought Iguodala had a pretty bad game too. He had a lot of bad turnovers that led to fast breaks. And he had one of his worse defensive efforts of the season (for his standards).

user-pic
Tray reply to Xsago on Jan 22 at 7:01
+/-

Yes, except that we were heavily outclassed, if not killed, on the glass, and that they also outscored us by 14 points at the rim, partly because they had 10 blocks, partly because of their offensive rebounding, partly because LeBron was 6-6 around the basket. They had a 10-point advantage on long twos as well, but that's just what made it a blowout; their distinct advantage on the boards and in the paint would have given them a win without that.

http://www.hoopdata.com/boxscore.aspx?id=320121014

Another big reason for success is that the transition offense was stiffled by the Heat getting back on defense extremely fast. They continually slowed down the break and clogged passing lanes. As far as the board defecit go, I don't think that is replicable with a full game of Hawes/Vucevic.

Not concerned about this loss. Seems in the losses the sixers haven't been at full strength. Positives as stated Vuc & Turner. Not sure about Jrue at this point but I am certain that Lou can not play against physical teams which won't translate at all in a playoff setting. Maybe, he can be used to get a servicable athletic backup big in here.
