To paraphrase the great Joseph, any win will do

ESPN Chat with John Hollinger:

Justin (Portland, OR)

Who will take the crown from Dwight Howard as the defensive player of the year? Will someone get tired of voting for him, a couple articles get made about player X (like Deng), and then player X wins it?

John Hollinger (2:45 PM)

I think there's a very good chance Andre Iguodala wins it. Sixers are first in Defensive Efficiency despite a lack of imposing defenders, and their strong start has taken Iggy's D out of the shadows and into the limelight.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be a great achievement for Andre if he could win the DPOY award. I think he has a good chance to win it if we can finish the season with the top ranked D in the league. If we slip back a few spots, I could see them giving it to someone else but I would still find it hard to believe they could give it to Dwight for the 4th year in a row. He still has been a beast this year despite all the trade crap. No player has ever won the award 4 years in a row, although be wallace did to it 4 out of 5 years.

If Andre or Dwight don't win it, I could easily see the award going to Lebron. He could win MVP and DPOY this year.

You can make the case for LeBron and Howard every year, but Orlando is 11th and Miami is 7th in DFR. If the Sixers finish the year first, I think Iguodala has a legit shot and should probably win it. Best defender on the best defense, and really no one behind him to help out.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Feb 28 at 19:18
+/-

Who votes for that award? Do they even look at DFR like they should or do they just vote on hype like so many other awards?

Would be great if he pulled that off though.

I think it's the writers, but not sure. Whether it's writers or coaches, some do look at DFR, some can't spell it. The ones that don't look at DFR will look at points-allowed, and the Sixers are currently leading the league in points-allowed as well, so they'd probably need to keep that up as well.

Don't feel too good about this one going in, think the Pistons are better than their record. May just be b/c they handled the Celts twice...

They've had a couple of good streaks lately, three in a row and four in a row. Hope Brand's legs are fresh.

Aaaand we're off.....LVA loses the tip.

and then he gets toasted and gives a bad foul on the defensive end. Ugh.

Monroe has some pretty moves around the basket

EB can shoot over Maxiell, wouldn't be surprised if they switch Monroe onto him.

Man, Monroe is a motherfucker

Wouldn't matter if it wasn't for all these second chances. They've missed 6 shots. One went out of bounds to the Pistons, one was a defensive rebound for the Sixers, the other four were offensive boards for the Pistons.

Argh. Meeks.

AI9 playing like an All-Star early on here.

If Meeks is with him on a side in transition, Dre really needs to attack that side even if Jodie is covered. The read to EB was perfect because of that, execution wasn't.

Huh? You might ought to look at that again. He never had any kind of position. He was acting like he wanted to help Thad out w/ Stuckey standing at the edge of the lane. Turner was never aware of where Maxiell was.

OK then, Turner "starting" to get position and "before he even got there" just can't equal "good position" as you originally stated. Right?

The play speaks for itself, Turner was outside position the whole time, and really wasn't even aware where his man was, his head and body was turned watching Thad who had Stuckey covered very well about 5 ft away. And Maxiell didn't shove him, he just cleared out with his arm making contact/tied up with ET's.

It's not really a bias when it's proven itself out to be true from the very beginning before the kid ever got here. It was as unprejudiced and impartial as could be.

Like that was gonna change the game around and worth commenting on ...... lol

A shot is a little more newsworthy than an almost backcourt violation, no?

Come on, you're better than this. A boneheaded non-court awareness BACKWARDS pass that is 1 sec AWAY from a TURNOVER is way more possibly detrimental to a team than an open 3 point shot that misses. One, you don't even have a chance to shoot a 3, the other has a roughly 3 out of 10 chance of going in, still a chance though. Not to mention, all the chosen one had to do was just keep dribbling one more time and two more steps to get it across the timeline. Insert brain fart.

He continues to prove he's a bum of a pick.

Evan-ordinary!!

Turner getting his jumper semi-back on track.

Noc is stat chasing, haha

Graveyard shift going to blow the 30-point lead.

Elson, heh.

MEEEEKS. Need the three for 100.

flu-like symptoms for doug

PHI 97, DET 68 Final.

Only question was whether it would finish above 30. Good win out of the break and great to get the important guys rest w/ the b2b tomorrow night vs. OKC.

Hope Doug is alright.

annnnd Francisco elson gets the hand-the-ball-off-to-the-ref honors!

Doug just has the flu. Already announced.

Great win! Good night guys.

That's a nice win against a horrible team that had been playing alright of late, where everyone pretty much had a hand in making it a win.

Gonna need a even bigger effort tomorrow night though.

Going tomorrow night...got the same seats underneath the basket that I had for the Bulls game...hope i see the same result. I was at the OKC game last season - a REAL heartbreaker...Sixers led the whole game, until KD got hot late...he hit a RIDICULOUS 3 with Iggy all over him to tie it late, then they ran an iso for Iguodala for the last play of regulation and he turned it over...then they got strafed in OT.

Hope THAT doesn't happen again.

Brand's presence means SO much out on the floor.

He didn't turn it over. He missed a jumper.

I actually had it on my phone for a while...I remember recording it and then saying WTF? We didn't even get a shot?

It was an offensive foul by Iggy with 1.9 seconds to go...Durant actually got a decent look at a 3 at the buzzer - was shocked that it didn't go it.

Brook Lopez scored THIRTY EIGHT against the Mavs tonight?

Maybe the Nets can get Howard after all.

I hear you, bro...but Howard's not going to Minnesota, so Love ain't available.

Anyone interested in making 3/1/12 a ET argument free day? There has to be other things worth discussing.

I'm interested, but are you skipping today purposely, or did you just forget it's a leap year?

Actually thought today was Leap Day. Working so many night shifts has made me lose track.

Anyhow, making Leap Day a non-ET argument day is even better. My hope is that:

1. We can get some other discussion going once there is some breathing room since I think ET discussion has hijacked all other discourse.

2. People will notice how great it is to not be rehashing the same old arguments and realize it is time to give it a rest for a while until we actually reach the point where there is something new to add to the debate.

Couldn't agree more. Maybe the commenting police (during game threads particularly) will take note. I'm not hopeful though.

Never seen a guy(s) get so riled up over what are at the time very poignant impartial comments. Intent is very often misconstrued, but whatever, it's nothing new, but it is old as hell. Same culprits every single time.

The point where something new can be added will be the day he gets shipped out of here, or not re-signed.

I intentionally go to other forums during the games because I don't want to read posts from you about how Turner didn't box somebody out properly or he missed a jumper. While certain plays - or mistakes - are worth pointing out in a thread, the level of micromanaging every aspect of Turner's game has reached a truly absurd level around here.

Here's hoping you can do it.

I like how you conveniently ignore the critiques and micromanagements of Jrue, Andre, Lavoy, and Vuc etc. While also ignoring others calling out the exact same things about the golden child.

So sorry you're offended by real-time attentiveness of the chosen one. That's your problem bud. Hope you can seek help for it. And going to other forums so you don't have to comment police around here, .... that's some really funny shit right there ... lol it really is lol.

Ah, the allure....it mystifies

You need help.

The irony here is deep. It seems there's too much *micromanaging* of his comments by yourself. This really isn't about what's being said, it's about who's saying it. Now that is absurd, and a truly sad state to be in.

And that is why I go to other forums during the games...the micromanaging of ongoing agendas - like Turner - has simply made the GDT unreadable for me. I found myself getting dragged into shit that added ZERO to the thread and only served to raise my blood pressure.

I couldn't resist getting dragged in, so I simply choose to stay away. I am sure that I am not missed.

No one 'drags' you into anything. You are a grown adult with the ability to choose. You can choose not to be 'dragged' into micro managing.

All blogs have 'pet topics' that people can not let go. This one is no different, but it is the best sixers blog around.

You avoid the game threads because you are UNABLE to control your own self. And even then, it seems, after the games you still feel the need to have the same arguments, which would end much sooner without your participation.

Man up and take responsibility for your own actions.

The Pistons aren't a great team, but it was good to see flashes of the Sixers from earlier this season. They played stifling defense, got great production from the bench (Thad was awesome), and had an absolutely dominant quarter that they would use to pull away from teams at the beginning of the season.

One other observation of note, I thought that Jrue had a very strong game. He played limited minutes because of slight foul trouble and the lopsided score, but in those minutes he was a force on the defensive end and also looked very good on the offensive end. Good passes, good penetration, and a good shot. Maybe a short break was just what they needed. Hopefully they can carry the same type of game into tomorrow.

IMO the two most impressive players on the floor were Thad and Monroe.

and we could have had both. But hey, we've still got ..... wait for it ............ DiLeo.

Eh, I hate playing that game. If they went big w/ the pick, it wouldn't have been Monroe anyway. Would've been Favors or maybe Cousins.

I would love to see the comments you made before the 2010 draft saying that the sixers should draft Greg Monroe second.

Hindsight is 20/20 but I have never seen anyone use their perfect hindsight is such a belligerent stroke my ego kind of way before.

Actually, I do remember someone saying they wanted Monroe, but that was prior to the lottery.

Hell, I remember folks who wanted Epke Udoh, even in the top 5, so yeah, they were wrong. Wes Johnson over Evan Turner seemed to be on a lot of peoples minds, that's worked out pretty well over their first 2 seasons.

All I'm saying is it's easy to talk junk after the fact, but it's doubtful he said 'greg monroe should be the #2 pick in the draft', and collins wanted favors, so I'm not sure how it's dileo's fault, when no one in the organization is reported to have wanted the guy who went seventh in the draft.

Avid lurker, infrequent poster, huge fan. Eddie's did say he wanted Greg Monroe late in the 2010 college / N.B.A. season. He also liked Ekpe Udoh too I recall. This was before the lottery order played out, both seasons were still active.

But on another note, how is he stroking his ego by just saying the 76ers could have had both? Seems to me he's just saying the braintrust missed the boat on Monroes potential. Nothing about who he wanted or didn't want.

I take note whenever he or Brian or Statman comment as they appear to be astute observers of the game and as fair as can be on players on the team. Good stuff from these guys as well as some others. During game threads Brian and Eddie's will often notice the same thing at the same moment and say basically the same thing just using different lingo. Been interesting to see the vibe during live action over the past few years between those two when reading the game threads the next morning. Statman and Brian typically have the same take in recaps after games, often on the same wavelength. Good blogging.
