Sixers

, all the time

Hah, I'd chip in some money to pay Foster to start hacking the shit out of Jrue.

I correctly called the last four, and I had this as a loss, though in retrospect that seems stupid. Bucks were 7-2 in their first 9 home games, 1-6 in their last 7. The win was a very narrow victory over the Wizards.

Turner and Vuc starting over Jodie and Lavoy tonight. Did not see that coming.

Wow, that is a shock. Spiller must be over the moon, wherever he is. Does this count as a golden opportunity for Turner?

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Mar 5 at 19:54
+/-

Yeah I would say so. I'm not going to act like he needs to drop 20 points tonight, but we better see a major effort from him. Hustle, rebounding, defense, and it would be nice if his shot selection wasn't dogshit for a change.

I do worry a bit because it seems like whenever a coach makes a change just to shake things up it doesn't work out. Last year, Turner was playing poorly and Meeks was shooting great so the change made sense. Right now they both look like shit so it will be interesting to see what happens now.

wow!, sounds like turner is starting

@mharrisCSN NEWS ALERT: @thekidet is starting tonight per @dlynamCSN.

Hmm...I suppose that's good news, except with the way Collins has been handling him, one mistake and he'll sit the rest of the first half, replaced by lou. Two mistakes and he'll be yanked yet again.

user-pic

This is his chance and he's got to take advantage of it. Play well and you'll stay a starter, play badly, and back to the bench you'll go

Jodie Meeks has been playing badly for months

user-pic

I love turner, but he hasnt been playing much better. We know what he can do defensively and on the glass, but he has to be an offensive threat

Has to pay attention when he isn't on the ball on defense as well. It's like he needs to be the focal point on both ends to be productive.

user-pic
GoSixers reply to Brian on Mar 5 at 19:43

It's like he needs to be the focal point on both ends to be productive.

They said something about that during the one ESPN games this weekend and I started to notice his constant calling for the ball on offense...i really hope that's not the case

I actually should've qualified that: "has to be the focal point on both ends to theoretically be productive."

user-pic
re18954 reply to Brian on Mar 5 at 19:44

Yea agreed. He's a good on the ball defender, but often gets caught watching the ball when other players have it, and then hes out of position. Also needs to do a better job of getting through screens

user-pic
GoSixers reply to re18954 on Mar 5 at 19:43

That wasn't really my point. My point was why does he only get the one game when Jodie has had months of suckage that lead to this point. Turner doesn't have to to much to be as offensively effective as Jodie Meeks but he'll for SURE be better defensively than Meeks. At which point his overall contribution to the game is likely to be better

Wait a second, did the Warriors actually score 41 points in the first quarter against the Wizards? Holy crap, saw the score, thought it was the half.

Ugh, if he was going to make changes wish he would insert Lou for Meeks, and Thad for Lavoy as I tried to ramble about after Friday night's game. If not Thad, at the least, Lou.

I agree with you, Lou starting and Turner, Meeks, and Thad running together off the bench would have made more sense to me.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to MCT on Mar 5 at 20:00
+/-

Wonder what he said to Lou about making this change. Hell, if I was him I'd be kind of pissed sitting back thinking "these two guys are starting instead of me"? I know he's been a team player accepting his role off the bench but you'd have to think he's confused a little on the inside.

I know Lou wants to start but I'm sure he'll be fine as long as he gets his shots, and you know that won't change anytime soon.

I get what you're saying about Thad and Lou in the starting lineup, they certainly deserve it, but if you do that, how are you going to get anything at all out of your second unit?

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Mar 5 at 20:11

Well what I was thinking Friday is that you bring Vuc and Lavoy in together with Turner, Meeks, and staggering either Jrue/Andre to always be out there with them. Not sure how it would play out, but it'd be worth a try.

I hope and pray tonight all the Turner backers are completely vindicated, he takes this opportunity and runs with it and is never removed from the starting lineup. Just be aggressive and smart, please.

They mostly have 4 channels for each game - 2 (SD and HD) for home coverage and 2 (SD and HD) for away coverage, except in the Sixers case where they have only shown the away coverage sans the Lakers game. Has to be something about Comcast Philly and DirecTV not ironing out differences ala Time Warner and MSG because other Comcast networks are shown on regular sports package (600's channels) but not Comcast Philly.

They show every Sixers game to answer your question, you just miss Zumoff's endless lovefest.

Kind of odd timing to make this move for Collins, no? Second night of a back-to-back, coming off a game in which the team really didn't play poorly, and Turner played kind of bad? Voose was good last night offensively, maybe that explains the C position, but Turner didn't really outplay Meeks last night, did he?

As Brian said, very weird timing with this lineup change considering they played rather well last night. This theory is kind of shot down with Vuc being inserted too, but wonder if it is to increase value in a showcase type thing for a trade w/ Turner. Considering how bad he was last night.

Turner waxes all fancy with his dribble, but it's like he doesn't spring-up quick enough or something.

He just has to adjust his game.Yes his shot has no arch but that does not stop Andre Miller from getting his shot off with his 4 inch vert.Turner just needs the minutes to get his rhythm. His jumper will go in consistently again the year obviously. He just needs to adapt his to the hoop moves.

I meant his jumper will not.

I'm not sure why it's obvious his jumper will go in consistently, when it hasn't yet to this point of his career.

I meant his jumper will not go in consistently again this year like last year.

Evan needs to cool down. He's playing a solid game, just rushing/forcing his offensive game/shots.

What exactly are you liking about it? I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm actually curious. Because I've begun to hate watching him play basketball. Maybe I'm missing something.

OK, Turner's doing a great job on the glass. I think he needs to forget about shooting while he's in there and concentrate on setting guys up. It's just not falling, don't try to shoot yourself out of it. Get a layup at some point to break the seal, if you can, but stop w/ the jumpers.

or how about getting to the line . . . .

Either or, but I don't want him to focus on scoring. Focus on the other guys on the floor around you. Set them up for looks w/ your dribble.

DRose 2pts at the half (1-9 shooting)... Bulls down 1.

I have a feeling he won't keep that pace up.

Turner has zero confidence. So much for having a chip on shoulder for 1) terrible first season 2) underacheiving second season and 3) not starting over Jodie Meeks.

He has played a pretty good game besides being 0-7

What would you be saying about Iguodala if he put up that line in a half?

Nothing in the first half. I would put him through the grinder in the fourth quarter.

user-pic
Phil reply to KellyDad on Mar 5 at 21:21
+/-

Ditto. He played solid D, grabbed 9 boards, had 2 assists (should have been at least 3 - set up Jrue for a WIDE open 3). He's missing layups right now. We all know that he does not miss layups (he was like 90% around the rim in the first quarter of the season (Brian wrote about it)). I guess it's all about confidence right now. If you saw the Rising-Stars game you could see him play without this pressure and it was good for him.

And I think he played solid D all season and his rebounding numbers are great. He's one of the top guard rebounders in this league, which means that he has to get dirty and jump with the bigs - and he's willing to do it.

Turner does so many things well except shoot, and he really likes to shoot apparently. He goes inside and gets blocked, so oh well, just drop the offense. Credit where credit is due however, 9 boards by the half and they were fairly typical boards for him. He could do that with regularity. Push it inside you moron!

Alright, let's see a push to start the third, huh?

OK, this has to be an Evan Turner showcase. Vuc was 3 for 3 with a couple boards but Thad starts over him? Meanwhile, Evan can't throw it in the ocean, yet Jodie is shooting 4-4 overall, 3-3 from deep and Evan stays in as starter? OK....

I like that Doug went right back o him.

Or it could just be that Jodie (finally) played well off the bench and Collins thought 'Why mess with a good thing?'

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Rich on Mar 5 at 21:31

OK, so why take Vuc out, he did rather well in his minor burn? If that's the theory.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Rich on Mar 5 at 21:43
+/-

Whatever. If you think this guy already playing 28 minutes before the end of the 3rd is wacky with the way he's playing, while Jodie has only 6 minutes while shooting 100%, then maybe we should reassess the definition of sound theory then.

I never said that he should be playing that many minutes. Where did I write that? Well, good to see you still have sound reading comprehension.

You asked why is Jodie not starting and Voose isn't. My answer below explains it.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Rich on Mar 5 at 21:54
+/-

You didn't write it, I did. Comprehension duly noted.

Ugh, who cares? Never thought Turner would get yanked to start the third. Didn't think Voose would either. Think it had more to do w/ Voose's defense than anything else. He wanted Thad in to follow Ilyasova instead of Voose or Brand.

Ah, OK so your question has been answered here and it's a pretty strong "No, it's not a showcase for a trade." Even though it would be pretty ridiculous to think they would showcase a guy who can't throw it in the ocean.

The answer looks most likely to me that Collins probably wanted to rest Brand a little bit (2nd game of a B2B, gonna need him down the stretch) and was encouraged by Voose's play. In this way, Voose plays more minutes in the middle of the half, but eats up a lot so Thad and Brand, who were good down the stretch last night, can finish. Either way, it was definitely a strategy (or injury?) thing and not a punishment thing.

Terrible game for Jrue. Can't lose Dunleavy like that.

Nice split by Lou there.

Good call on the jacking 3-pointers.

Surprise is they actually made 2 of those.

Lou seems to be much better off the ball at the end of these games. He's getting great looks tonight.

I know we tell the Sixers to take it inside more often, and I agree with this wholeheartedly, but I can understand why they don't. The Sixers simply rarely EVER get calls when they drive the ball inside. I see them getting hacked, slapped, and grabbed, and I rarely ever hear a whistle. Surely, they should attack more than they do, but when they do, they never get the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sorry, that call ruined the game. Lead's down to 3 if they call it correctly. I can't even believe how good of a play they ran.

Turner is a bad, bad player right now. He's lucky they have nobody else. He didn't help one but tonight.

Well, at least the Sixers are consistent. You know exactly what you are getting when you look at scoreboard with 5 minutes left...

Jodie doesn't use screens all that well on that one, per usual.

Can't blame Lou too much because he saved them down the stretch big time, but how the hell was Udrih that wide open on the one possession? Game was tied then you give that a guy a wide open eight footer? Nobody was near him.

One thing that has to be mentioned is that call on Brand, an absolute joke of a call that wiped 2 crucial points off the board.

It's really disappointing that they go "Iso Lou" there, after they were lucky because Jennings was too aggressive. They ran that back screen for Lou that was a great play to Brand before. They ran Lou off screens and he got Jrue an open three. Yet they go ISO at the end. I'd rather have given him a ball screen, he hit on one a few possessions before. Really disheartening.

I think Doug calls timeouts just so he can set up an inbound play, he certainly doesnt need one to run the 1-4 Lou iso

user-pic
Rich reply to Rich on Mar 5 at 22:40

Oh and it's tough to blame Lou at all for that 1-4 call. Yeah, he didn't make it, but he showed tonight that he can be a cog in a 5 man attack at the end of games off the ball. His decision making on designed plays off the ball was excellent tonight.

If Turner could hit some Damn shots they probably could have won ... I bet somebody is going to defend him but really his play has been bad.

It is humanly impossible for Evan Tirner to keep shooting that bad.

All the Sixers fans that were earlier talking about how they liked how Turner was playing, I would bet that not one of them while watching this game felt that Ersan Ilyasova had a good game or played well.

Turner - 1-12 fgs - 12 rebs (11 D, 1 O) - 4 asst - 1 st - 1 block - 2 turnovers - 2 pts - no free throws or three pt'ers

Ilyasova - 3-11 (1-3 from deep) - 18 rebs (13 D, 5 0) - 4 asst - 0 st - 2 blocks - 1 turnover - 11 pts - 4-4 free throws

Good example of how fans can view players on their own teams.

If you flipped it Bucks fans would probably believe Ilyasova had just a so-so game with great glass play, while believing Turner stunk but grabbed some rebounds along the way.

user-pic
tk76 reply to Anonymous on Mar 5 at 22:46

I think 18 rebounds is exceptional. 11 is impressive from the SG position, but most of his boards were around other Sixers.

But honestly it is like trying to say a 20 point game is like a 36 point game. One happens every night while the other is really impressive.

This team has big problems. They still are not beating good teams, and now they are losing close games to bad teams.

Even if the team pulled the game out tonight....winning with the "Lou show" is fools gold. I would rather them lose a game by running a play than win with Lou-against-the-world for the last 2 minutes of every close game.

Well, I guess last season, the terrible stretch of crap playing came at the beginning of the season (3-13 start). This year, it's coming in the middle of the season (3-8 in their last 11). Just goes to show, this is, by and large, almost the exact same team as last year.

Would be nice if our starting center could be healthy, and if Doug Collins would go to his strengths for 48 minutes a game.

user-pic
Statman on Mar 5 at 23:21
+/-

One small positive to take from Turner's performance (other than the defensive boards) is that he contributed to the good ball movement in the first half with several nice passes. His pure passing instincts are probably second to Iguodala's on the team. However, it looked to me that Turner stopped looking to set others up in the second half (just one assist after the bailout three by Iguodala, which came after a bad pass) and instead tried to get his own shots, at which point his atrocious shooting outweighed everything else.

The stat that jumps out from the boxscore is that Vucevic was -21 in 17 minutes while Brand was +12 in 29 minutes. Brand was awful on offense but passable on defense (giving up 25 on 21 shots to Gooden wasn't exactly "good" defense). But Vucevic was poor on both ends. Much of the Sixers' recent struggles with explosive point guards comes from the fact that none of the centers can slow down penetrators. It doesn't matter how good Jrue or Iguodala are at on-the-ball defense if a simple pick from the opposing center sets their man free.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Mar 5 at 23:34

How does Andre only grab 2 boards in 38 minutes? Jodie w/ 2, Lou w/ 3, Jrue w/ 3. No reason for that.

Now that it is clear that the Sixers are not as great as they seemed earlier this year, I'm back to looking at my original goals for the year:

1. Jrue making a step forward towards bing a top flight pg who runs the team well.

2. Turner developing into a quality nba player.

3. Thad showing he is worth his contract.

4. The team getting future starters in place post brand at PF & C.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to tk76 on Mar 5 at 23:45
+/-

Looking like you're only gonna bat 1-4 on those my friend.

Jrue is making me have major Lawson flashbacks. He seems to just not be the type of point guard to accumulate assists easily. And his line (lack of) troubles are a long term trend at this point.

Turner is, well, better left unsaid, particularly by muah.

Thad may be worth that contract, but it still doesn't hide the fact they bid against themselves instead of seeing what the market may have set for him.

If this team ever thinks Lavoy or Vuc are future starters, we may be longing for the string of mediocre years to come back.

Well they are 20 and 5 in games decided by more than 7 points. So at least the are good for an easy win in half of their games. The other half I suggest you turn off early in the fourth. You should never be stuck in traffic after a Sixers game because you can wayseave with 5 minutes to go and nu sure of the outcome.

I actually think Voose and Lavoy are quality backups down the road. If Voose is your 8th man, he could develop into a real plus at that position. As for Lavoy, I have my doubts about his work ethic, but he has the talent to be just as useful as Voose, maybe with a few different skills. Those guys are still rookies learning on the absolute fly, and aren't bigs generally supposed to develop faster? That's been a plus so far this year, getting two possible rotation guys with picks that far down in the draft.

Now they have big problems when it comes to the guys who are going to start ahead of them in the future. These guys don't grow on trees, but a guy who could rebound the ball and catch/finish a lob pass would be a huge upgrade.

Thad's worth it, if not more. If I had to say right now, I'd put Jrue as an elite defensive PG, probably average offensively w/ his lack of FTs keeping him there, which is a fine. That's a quality starter, as long as you can get plus offense elsewhere, which they can't.

Turner and the bigs, back to the drawing board, I guess.

It's tough to break this team down into pieces and identify what's worth keeping and what should go, though, because they are still the best defensive team in the league. If they could score a little better, who knows.

The early returns on your four goals don't look particularly promising, though.

If this start was a showcase for turner for some interested trade partner, I doubt they're interested anymore. Best way to salvage some value for him may be to send him to the D-League for a couple of weeks.

Not exactly 17 20 18 from the guy on the trading block.

Nope. He did get rejected by the rim on one dunk and take three steps to attempt another, though. That has to count for something. Oh, and even though he couldn't hit the broad side of the barn he kept shooting, which shows he has the guts of a burglar.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Mar 6 at 0:04
+/-

I think he was clearly pressing tonight, you could tell with those two early turnovers. They should have both been easy buckets and he tensed up. And the missed dunk, that was just awful. It looked like he was aiming with his jumpshots too.

In the end though, how weak is this dude mentally if he pressed this bad in his first start of the year? It was the goddamn Bucks, on the road, in front of about 300 fans. If that is pressure, than there is no hope for this kid in this league.

Does anyone know if Thad has an older brother?

I feel like Jrue has little brother syndrome. By that I mean he grew up playing in the back yard against his older (bigger) brother, and in the backyard they don't call fouls, so Jrue spent his formative years figuring out fancy ways to avoid the contact, get his shot up and in. At least that's what it looks like to me when he drives. He's constantly looking for ways to get around bigger guys and odd angles to get the shot off the glass without getting hit and missing the shot.

user-pic

user-pic

I think playing with Andre Miller also helped Lou learn to draw fouls. Miller used to pump fake to draw contact all the time, and then suddenly the next year Lou was doing it.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Mar 6 at 0:00

Jrue the little brother also defers to big brother Lou too much, I want the ball in his hands more then Lou at the end of quarters, including the 4th.

Is it out of the question to just not pick up Turner's option for next year? He is due to make $5.3M. His value is so bad right now that you would have to take on a mediocre to bad player in return and pay them whatever their crap contract is. I would rather have the cap space at this point. Unless we can trade him to a team that has the cap space and we just get a pick or a trade exception in return.

I mean if the pick was blown, making a bad trade won't fix it. Chalk it up to the last bad decision made by Eddie Stefanski.

That is harsh. I still hold out hope because he works on his game and has pride. A quality nba player some day but maybe not for a while. He stinks right now though. He is still maintain plays that only work against big 10 defense, and there is no excuse for his slow adaptation to the nva game.

Intent, and particularly interpretation, can oft be misconstrued. I've said since last year that those type of comments were nothing more than me having fun and my own way of dealing with the disappointment of the pick and the player. I had/have to clown with it, it's the only way I can maintain my sanity as a long-suffering fan of this franchise. I'd become pissed or cry if I didn't.

Someone becoming angry at what I consider my method of dealing with my depressed-fandom and how I choose to express/deliver it in this forum is pretty petty and absurb. My Turner negativity wasn't directed at anyone specifically, it was just my web-log of my thoughts/feelings/opinions displayed on this platform that Brian so graciously provides and I'm privileged to be a part of.

Never understand why it would cause such division and venom to come forth.

user-pic

I realize the staff is worried about the second unit's scoring punch, but I just can't see how they don't start Lou at the 2. As much as they are letting Jrue play off the ball, Lou can run some point, as well as he has been setting guys up this year (better than Jrue). Lou will do well at running off screens catching-and-shooting at off-guard (he does this better than Jodie). I know defense will be a hurdle because of Lou's height and stature, but if you can hide Jodie, who is definitely stronger in lower and upper body, you should be able to hide Lou between Andre and Jrue. When the guy puts up 16 points in the 4th quarter tonight and the rest of the team only mustered 22 for the WHOLE HALF, there is no harm in just shifting the minutes he plays and the units he plays with.

I mean, team defense is the obvious strong suit, offense seems to be the achilles heel now. Well Lou helps that tremendously and not from just scoring but from getting other guys looks, along with his penchant for getting to the line. If the team defense can sustain it's lofty ranking with Lou getting around 25 minutes a game with no strong defenders to hide him on the 2nd unit, then why wouldn't it sustain itself if you move him with the 1st unit with 2 strong defenders to mask his weaknesses on that end?
