All the Sixers need to do is focus, first and foremost, on DEFENSE...as long as JTI goes in lockdown mode, they will DESTROY them in transition.

NICE board and push by Turner, gotta make those though...

Lou kind of redeems himself after the last 2 possessions. Started badly, then shoulda stretched a lead. Up 2 at the break is not bad.

Let's hope for a typical third quarter burst from the Sixers.

Evan 9-7-2 after first half. Let's hope he can keep 'em piling.

Whenever Chandler is out of the game the Sixers need to attack the rim, there will always be a mismatch on the perimeter for the Sixers to exploit.

On defense they need to keep the pressure up on the pgs and defend the PnR better.

how was that off turner

Evan Turner, where the heck you been kid? Don't go back wherever it was....

Love this win. Love it even more than the one against the Celtics. Great Sunday evening ahead! Enjoy it guys!

Lou was great today, sure...but he is gonna be a handful for Doug to manage once he finds himself on the bench down the stretch of close games...just did the postgame interview and again he was talking about how he's a fourth quarter player..."I've always been a fourth quarter player throughout my career"...a lot of athletes are somewhat delusional but Lou especially so...

you are misinterpreting lou's comments.

he was saying that usually gets off in the fourth, but today he happened to get off in the third.

he was not complaining about fourth quarter minutes, that would make no sense, because he was in the game down the stretch. he took plenty of fourth quarter shots, they just didn't go in.

user-pic
mchezo reply to mymanjrue on Mar 11 at 17:21

Hasn't Lou has led the sixers in fourth quarter scoring for four or five years straight?

Third game in a row that really makes me question Coach Collins decision to keep Turner on the bench. He said that a team that is 20-9 you don't make changes. What if you think the team could go 24-5? I think he was 100% wrong in his initial decision.

I agree...but on the other hand-I think if not for the lockout, Evan would have started from the beginning of the season. Once he made the decision to go with Jodie as the opening day starter, he stuck with it as they came out of the gate hot. Glad Evan is starting now, though. It is really incredible how much better he makes the team

user-pic
Stan reply to KellyDad on Mar 11 at 15:14

user-pic
Big Will on Mar 11 at 14:32

One of the most fun games to watch and enjoy this year. Must've been cool to be at MSG today as a Sixers fan. Philly #1 in the Atlantic!

POTG: Lou.

Evan played stellar, but had 5 TOV. Dre was impressive as hell again, too. He went for 19pts (7-11), 7rebs, 8asts, 4sts, 1blk, 2 tov. But Lou was so efficient today. Even though he missed some layups late. But his defense was fine, too.

Again: GREAT FUCKING WIN!!

Great games from Lou, ET, and Iggy

Such a satisfying W. However the Sixers only really went 7 deep in this game, Jodie only played 7.

They had a few days off, so Doug decided to play them heavy minutes.

Dont have a problem with it because they dont play til Wednesday. And other than Brand they all should be able to handle it even if they played on Tuesday

We had 3 players of the bench. The Knicks went small most of the time. So I guess that's part of the reasoning not playing Lavoy didn't play. Battie won't play if we don't an offensive-minded C. And other than that, there's really no one who should get minutes if we're not up 30 in the 4th...

user-pic

Nah, it's just a matter of who's starting and who the opponent is. If Battie starts and plays his 8 minutes, Voose makes +1 off the bench. If the opponent is playing big and/or our bigs get in foul trouble Lavoy will get his minutes. So there you have it: an 8 to 9 man rotation.

Heh, so you toss around accusations at others and have no problem dishing it out, but can't take it when it's reasonably turned back on you? Yeah, that sounds Rush-like doesn't it......

Just saw that Liberty Ballers tweeted this stat

Evan Turner's DREB% since becoming a starter = 30.3 ... as a shooting guard! That's one of the most absurd stats ever.

I think for the season, he is around 23 or 24% which would be the 2nd best defensive rebounding percentages for a G, G-F, or F-G (assuming that means PG, SG, or SF?) in a season according to BasketballReference.com. The only one ahead of him is Dave DeBusschere and he was really a PF, not a wing player.

It's looking like he can improve upon that even more.

Who needs a front court when you have ET?

Man so fun to watch the Sixers right now so great to see Evan get his confidence back and really show what kind of player he can be. Man if he can play even close to this type of consistency I think we have a really special player on our hands, not to mention how much better the team looks overall. Great win today!! Go Sixers!!

wow. Nice prediction by Brian

Heh, i think this is the second game on a row that he missed it by a single point :)

Would be interesting to see the difference in FTAs as well. Looked like we got to the line more in those last games.

25.5% ftrate the last two games (16.1% the rest of season).

aaaand the Lakers help the cause by coming back (with maybe a little help from the referees) to beat Boston, is it too early to start scoreboard watching?

TRB% among G, G-F, F-G this season
1. James 13.4
2. Turner 13.1
3. Iguodala 9.9

Same for DRB%
1. Turner 23.7
2. James 20.5
3. Iguodala 16.7

Evan Friggin Turner. Love it. Great game by him and very encouraging to see him stepping it up. When Iguodola has solid contributors around him and he doesn't have to be "the man" you realize just how brilliant he is. A modern day Scottie Pippen IMO.
Its a good thing Jrue can defend because he gives them next to nothing on the offensive end. Had a few nice hustle plays but on offense hes just invisible.

Jrue was invisible today. Can you ever leave a comment without completely blowing something out of proportion? I guess it must be depressing for you to have to watch the Sixers demolish your beloved Knicks.

Am I wrong for liking the way Jrue approached the game today though? I think he was very aggressive, determined to get to the basket (didn't get a handful of calls that he could/should have), and missed some shots he usually converts. If the idea is that taking away some of the PG duties should allow him to focus more on scoring, he looks like he gets it, just wasn't feeling it today.

I'd love it if he could get to the line 7 times in a game where he could also hit the broad side of a barn w/ this jumper. That would be quite a combo.

Patience.

If ET hires a shooting coach... maybe Jrue can hire Lou as a foul drawing coach. Or maybe Shumpert.

What game are you watching ? I said he was invisible on offense---and he was. On defense he was pretty damn good.
I understand your a Sixers fan, as am I --but your not being objective. Just because I said that Jeremy Lin was almost single handedly responsible for pulling the Knicks out of a funk earlier this year(and he was) doesnt mean Im a Knicks fan.

Exactly what stat does Jrue have to be awful at for you to admit he had a bad game ?

This is what you said: "Its a good thing Jrue can defend because he gives them next to nothing on the offensive end."

This is what I said: "Jrue was invisible today."

Somehow you turn that into me not being able to admit Jrue had a bad offensive game today and you not making a blanket statement based on one game. You're a true idiot.

hmm--I misunderstood your comment in the context of what followed your invisible statement. No need to be a jerk about it.

I thought he forced a few of his shots early in the game to get himself going, but overall I agree with you. I'm glad he stayed aggressive, and I doubt he shoots 2-14 again for a long time (knock on wood). Our guards were really aggressive today, 23 FT attempts between Turner, Jrue, Dre, and Lou. I'll take it.

Meant to reply to johnrosz

And in all honesty, I'd rather have someone missing shots (who normally hits them) then a guy like Lin making terrible passing TO's leading to transition dunks (although Lion will learn.)

Jrue did not jack up terrible shots and they were looks we have seen him make. Lou's shot selection was actually worse than Jrue's- but props to him for being an uber efficient "bad shot taker." today. Used well, Lou is like Monta on a good day in controlled doses (like back when Monta used to shoot 53%... now he shoots 43%)

Back on draft day we all thought the Sixers really needed a guy who will get you 20 pts and 10 boards and live in the paint. Never thought that guy would be their starting SG...

how many more games like this until I can get legitimately excited about the kid?

This is one of the more remarkable instances of it "clicking" right before your eyes that I've seen in a long time...

Hope it's not just a tease.

I have no clue. Never had a good read on ET since day 1. I thought he would step in as a rookie and be a top 50 NBA player...wrong. Then he had me convinced as recently as last week that he could not play against NBA athletes...wrong again.

The wild card is the freaky rebounding. It is not out of the blue, because he led the Big Ten in D-Boards. But there has NEVER been a guy who rebounds like this from the guard position (at least in the past 30+ years.) Look at this stat:

http://bkref.com/tiny/wzowe

Keep in mind this is single seasons, so the guys on this list only dd it once in their career. But to me it looks like ET will have a DReb% over 20% for as long as he plays. As long as his coach allows him to crash the boards.

Since we have never seen a guy who can can d-board and then create a 1 man break like this I think we need to wait and see how it all plays out. We also have to look at it like Lin, in that teams have not started game-planning for him or this new line-up.

"I thought he would step in as a rookie and be a top 50 NBA player...wrong."

Your thought was actually right. He's showing that, clearly. You just couldn't have predicted that Doug Collins would refuse to start him and let him play, because it was so ridiculous.

It is a very delicate situation.

1. They had Jrue last year at age 20 trying to learn how to be a PG. He struggled a bit and they gave Iggy some of the PG responsibilities to help stabilize the team. I am not sure Jrue could have adapted to ET getting so much of the rock last year. I'm not even sure how Jrue will adapt right now- but I'm more confident given Jrue's experience and the fact that ET and Jrue are tight.

2. NBA teams don't start a PG/SG/SF combo where there is no shooting. The Sixers right now are treading in unknown waters- and being helped by Iggy and Lou's new-found 3pt prowess. Both those guys shot 3's at about 30% the season before ET was drafted.

At this point, ET grabs so many rebounds that I'd almost tell him that those will be 1/2 of the times he gets to run the point.

Bonzi wells comes to mind as an SG who really rebounded well. But Evan Turner can certainly do more on the court than Wells. I hope he can keep this up. Two weeks ago I commented that Turner was looking like a mistake at #2 overall. Nothing would make me happier than for Turner to prove me wrong. He's been real impressive.

Would Bonzi go end to end?

Some of these coast to coast plays almost remind me of when Sir Charles was young (although he would finish like a freight train were ET is more of a snake.)

What makes it even better is that even if ET does not go coast to coast, he can outlet to Iggy or Jrue- who each can lead the break... or throw a 90 foot pass to Thad, who would make a sick NFL wide receiver with his speed and footwork.

user-pic
Th Six reply to tk76 on Mar 12 at 0:52

No...I was only commenting that Wells had that unique ability for the position. He couldn't (to my recollection) get a rebound like ET and run the break. What an advantage.

Fat Lever, Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd come to mind.

Evan Turner, that is all.

The funny thing is that he did not really do anything this year to earn this opportunity in the minutes he played. I realize he may have been handcuffed in what they wanted from him... but he is starting because Meeks pooped the bed.

Props to ET for stepping up.

I don't think any player on this team would be able to "earn this opportunity" if most of their minutes came from playing off-the-ball with LouWill and getting removed from the floor for every mistake.

Put Iggy or Jrue in the role ET had the first 40 games and they wouldn't have earned the opportunity to start either. No one would.

The point is that Collins requiring that ET shine next to Lou and with a ridiculously quick hook in order to get the starting job was one of the most absurd coaching decisions we've ever seen. ET earned the starting job the day he was drafted because he's the best player on this team.

Come on dude, he isn't the best player on the team after a few great games.

No need for an "I told you so" post just yet. Many of us were ET fans before the breakout, and everyone wanted him to succeed. Everyone is glad that he is succeeding.

I don't need to write an I-told-you-so post, the play of Evan Turner does that for me. I haven't posted here much lately because I got the impression that my opinions were not really welcome here, and it's probably still the same today so I'll probably retreat away again.

I'm allowed to say Evan Turner is the best player on this team. I've always felt this way. It's my opinion. Aren't blog comments supposed to be about opinions of fans? I've been lambasted for this opinion, but now it's not so crazy is it.

Your unwarranted blind faith certainly seems to be paying dividends. You probably deserve a couple I-told-you-so's.

Although he might want to wait a few weeks and see how this all plays out.

Why thank you. And maybe it wasn't so unwarranted. In Turner's rare breakout games as a Sixer (he had a small chunk of them) I saw the talent that I had previously seen at Ohio State, and I knew it was all about confidence. The ability was clearly there. It was only a matter of being told "this is your game, take it over, you won't be getting removed." Going 1 for 12 in his first start was actually the best thing that could have happened to Turner. Because he still got 32 minutes, and it proved to him that his new role was not fleeting but permanent. He didn't have to look over his shoulder anymore.

That changed everything, and it's why he's had three straight monster games, in my opinion.

I've never lamblasted you for it, and I've been in just as many arguments with the Turner haters as you have.

Of course you're allowed to think that, I just think it's early to call him our best player. That's my opinion. You can't take it personal, I made the mistake of doing that when I first starting coming to this site and other Sixers blogs and it lead to far too many pointless arguments.

Anyway, I'm thrilled how we played in these past three games so I'm just going to enjoy the moment.

The only thing I took personal was this: "No need for an "I told you so" post just yet." I wasn't doing that, I was just offering my opinion that he's the best player on this team and you accused me of doing an "I told you so" post.

You could have just written "I disagree, I'm not ready to say he's the best player on this team." Instead you called me out as an "I told you so" artist, which wasn't really necessary.

But no hard feelings.

I don't think you can really find 2 "Turner haters" on this board. A lot of us wanted to see something positive from the Kid (on the NBA level as opposed to college) but were not seeing it... despite the guy playing 2500+ minutes prior to last week.

No one doubted that he was not in an ideal role... but other great players show you something regardless of what role you put them in. So it was hard to hear how he "desrved better" and easy to see why he was in the Doug House. And frustrating to hear people upset about ET when the team was winning and the guy was getting 24+ minutes a game.... That is far from hating ET. It is closer to "hating" ET apologists (although I for one hope I treat people with respect.)

Sorry if that sounds harsh... but wanted to lay out some honesty.

And to be fair... I have often been a Jrue and Iggy apologist. Heck, I was even a Sam and Lou apologist for a while when it seemed like everyone blamed them for the sun setting.

And I would add, I don't even go to those forums anymore because there is too much nonsense, especially Philly.com.

There were some trade proposals here that, while not necessarily "hatred," certainly showed an intense dislike for Turner's potential. I think MCT and you are using a different version of the word "hatred."

I don't think "Turner-hate" is equivalent to having vindictive feelings toward Evan Turner the person. It's more about coming to the conclusion that the guy has no game and should be traded for relative garbage without even giving him a chance to start. "Hate" is more of a generic term these days for "thinks he stinks." At least as far as people I talk to use it.

O.K. Then by that measure I qualify. I held out hope that long term ET would develop into a good pro. But I was not sure it would happen on this team (with this line-up) or that it would happen this year.

I hope these last 3 games prove me to be wrong,

I know of ONE Turner hater on this board...

;-)

Although, to be fair, he has been very supportive of Turner's improved play during the last couple of game threads. Haven't seen much of him in the post-game "is this shit for real?" discussions, though.

While not as vocal as spiller, I too felt that - after a strong 15-20 game start to the season, Collins was just pissing Turner down the drain with those 2nd team minutes as the backup SF/waterboy for Lou/Meeks. I am certainly glad that ET has gotten this opportunity, though...I only hope that at some point down the line we find out if there was something more to what happened with Turner - both the crappy minutes he was getting AND his insertion into the starting lineup.

The funny thing is that I get the sense that both Lou and Thad are thriving in ET's absence. Admit it, ET really stunk on the 2nd team this year, His efficiency numbers were terrible and he was not exactly an assist machine.

So ironical, the offense has improved by moving ET to the starting rotation both by improving the 1st team's ability to run out on the primary and secondary break (due to ET being Dennis Rodman without the dress) and also because ET's removal from the night shift has let Lou and Thad shine even brighter as pure scorers (who don't really need ET.) (but ET does help Thad when Thad runs with the starters because they are running more.)

So its the rare win-win where moving a bench guy to the starting line-up helps the starters... and helps the bench.

I absolutely think ET's role off the ball next to LouWill is the worst possible role for him. Always felt that way. I think ET can play off the ball, but with Iggy, not with Lou.

Yeah, because ET can cut where Iggy will find him. While Lou's game is not about finding cutters. It's more about drawing fouls and hitting "bad shots."

Bizarre stat:

Meeks put up 0's across the board in his limited 7 minute run... but led the team at +15.

Is that a typo or was he just an on the court witness of Boss play.?

MCT reply to tk76 on Mar 12 at 0:31

Think he was on the court when Lou when nuts in the 3rd quarter.

Brian - a question for you and others who I think are better at breaking down and analyzing a game than I am (perhaps it's my ADD) to consider: how do you think teams will start to game plan for us after this recent string of success? Will it be as simple as throwing a zone at us, and trying to take away our fast break?

Zone, absolutely. Also, like the Jazz, pound the offensive glass and don't make risky passes.

The biggest change right now is ET getting D-Boards and turning them into breaks. Prior to that their only run-out were off of steals. I'm not sure how teams take that away... But the Sixers still have gaping holes in the paint and like to shoot 20 foot jumpers. They also have yet to win close games.

But Collins and Curry have done a masterful job with the defensive scheme. Now they have to do the same with the offense. It is an casualness offense, which can be an advantage, although less so in a 7 game series when teams can adapt.

I'd like to here Rich's take. Also, interested to see how well Hawes and Et play off of each other. We saw a handoff to Et finish in a dunk- adn I think Hawes can really get ET some great looks off of cuts assuming Jrue and Iggy continue to spread the floor by knocking down 3's.

A little off topic, but there is an old episode of the "Great Sports Debate" on CSN right now. A Macgyver mullet-clad Al Morganti, Stan Hochman (who looked 100 even back then), Angelo Cataldi, and a guy who I don't recognize but looks like Mr. Kotter were arguing over whether Charles Shackleford could be a great player under a different coach (a Mr. Jim Lynam). I had to shut it off after 3 minutes.
