Sixers

, all the time

Jazz Are A Tall Order

For those unaware this game is on ESPN tonight

Set the DVR before I left this morning and forgot to mention that. Bet ESPN is psyched. Sixers w/out Bynum vs. New Orleans w/out A. Davis for the first game. Now Sixers w/out Bynum vs. the Jazz.

Remember that thing you wrote about how the sixers would be ok for a while without bynum cause of their schedule?

Yeah, those were good times when you were all optimistic and stuff :)

I said they should be better than .500 through Thanksgiving, right? Let's take a look:

Utah
Cleveland
Toronto
Cleveland

2-2 in those games doesn't seem like much of a stretch. 3-1 is certainly possible. Of course, now that he's out until mid-December, at the earliest, changes things.

0-4 through those games doesn't seem like much of a stretch either

They just got thumped by the worst team in the nba

at home

Eh, I'd say 4-0 is more likely than 0-4, but my brain is a bit scrambled at the time so who knows.

Too many Vick Hits huh?

Thanks! Hope Hubie Brown is doing the game.

As you go through your day - please take a moment of silence to mourn the passing of an American Icon

The Twinkee

The Iconic Twinkee fittingly devoured by vulture capitalism.

A loss less poignant than the one of being able to watch the Sixers for free on channel 17.

Never been hearbroken by a twinkee - consistent quality year in and year out

Zombieland will be meaningless to my kids when they're old enough to watch it.

Or it will be more poignant - and a teaching moment of the dangers of god damn health conscious hippies

Bynum on sportsnet just now said he has swelling in both knees and a cartelidge issue, more good news.

Was the the swelling and cartelidge issues before the team gave an update last week or after?

swelling from what? Watching practice and riding ellipticals? If that's the case we have bigger problems than not being able to hit shots.

I'm somewhat lost this morning. If you're not doing any strenuous activity because you're letting a bone bruise heal in your right knee, how do you develop a bone bruise in your left knee?

That seems suspiciously weird, no?

I guess if one of your knees is damaged, you're naturally going to start putting more weight, strain, etc. on the other knee, even if you're just walking around. On a guy his size, this was probably exacerbated.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Jeff on Nov 17 at 10:04
+/-

Yeah, I get all that. It's just that I didn't think it could be possible to "bruise" a knee bone just from walking. Even with cartilage issues, it would just seem like an arthritic situation, not an actual bone bruise from non-strenuous activity. Just seems odd when you think about it.

Thoughts:
-Being able to watch Jrue continue to maturate and blossom game to game is a joy to witness. This newly displayed hesitation-dribble/move he's showing this year is a beaut.
-Jason Richardson is a master at moving off the ball. He's near perfect in doing this, creating openings and spacing by not just camping out and spotting up. His will to attack the glass is a welcome sight also.
-Hawes. Hawes. Hawes. Yes, I'm now haunted again by recently put-away thoughts of why did we shell out 6.5 per for THIS? 6.5 per. For THIS?
-Carroll gave Turner fits. He was inefficient once again but he was almost invisible to me until the nicely done two late passes when they went on the final run to distance themselves for the W.
-What is up with Dorell and his minutes off the bench? This is, I think, the 3rd game where he's been on a short leash.
-2 free throws sans the garbage time padders in the last minute foul fest? I don't remember that many non-whistles either. Seems impossible considering 42 points scored in the paint.
-Our starting frontcourt (Kwame, Thad) had 14 combined rebounds. Our starting backcourt (Jrue, JRich) had 14 combined rebounds. Encouraging.
-The Sixers won the overall rebound battle vs the Jazz? Really?
-Hawes. Funny thing about his performance last night was he was only out there for 13 minutes total, but it sure seemed like he played 30 minutes as bad as he was and the heights to which he stunk it up. Ewww.
-Guess it pays to not come out of the gates flat, huh? The Sixers lost the last three quarters by 4 total points combined (1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th). Won the 1st by 10. Thank goodness for that hot-shooting first quarter from Jrue and JRich.
-Jrue had this dialed-in look in his eye right from the opening tap. His unconscious jumpers early offered proof of that.
-Hawes. What a waste.
-Hawes.

I didn't remember Turner being on Carroll much so I just looked at the play-by-play on ESPN.com. He scored 8 points in the second quarter with Turner on the bench, and then another 4 off of offensive rebounds, so that's 12 of his 17 points. He hit a jumper and a three in the 4th, so a couple of outside shots for 5 points on Turner is giving him fits (assuming Turner was guarding him on those two plays)? Also, Turner was invisible in the first half, no doubt, but he had a good second half. 11 points on 5-8 shooting, that is a little more than two nice passes. Really bad turnover in the last minute though, made the game close when it didn't need to be.

I have to think Dorrell is hurt or something? He played 5 minutes, something has to be up there. He had a turnover but I didn't see anything so glaring that he should have been kept out of the game.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to MCT on Nov 18 at 9:46

I was referring to Carroll guarding Turner. You must be this guys cousin or something....

Ok it's still an inaccurate statement. I'm no fan of the guy (anymore) but I also will give him some credit when he plays decent, and he did last game. No one gave him fits, he didn't force the issue and he made some solid contributions.

user-pic
Tom Moore on Nov 17 at 11:04

Watched the game late last night. Two thoughts about this team:

1: They are absolutely helpless when Jrue is on the bench.
2: when Jrue plays like a star, they have a decent chance, even against good teams.

Also think 4 turns for him last night is an acceptable total. 21 shots, 4 trips to the line, 7 dimes and handling the ball almost exclusively for 42 minuets. 4 is pretty good.

More later as part of the preview for tomorrow night's game.

user-pic
Johnrosz reply to Brian on Nov 17 at 13:13

They can't continue to let Ivey run point. He's honestly not even a good defender, he tries, but he has some lapses and gives up too much penetration. He's not capable of running an offense either. Good end of bench guy, but he really shouldn't be getting these minutes.

They should let Evan run point when Jrue is out. It might get him going. He was ok last night, and he can make plays for others.

His mistakes sometimes are just so glaring, so I can understand the apprehension about letting him handle the ball, but there are no other options.

I agree Ivey shouldn't be running the point. I guess they should go with Turner, simply because he's the only other option. It was a huge mistake not addressing that glaring weakness in the offseason.

Not the only glaring weakness that they didn't address...seriously, even with Bynum healthy (if he plays before the all star game I'll be shocked) they have no power forwards...

try telling this guy they have no power forwards! http://tinyurl.com/ak76y9o

MCT reply to das411 on Nov 17 at 14:14

lol

The four trips to the line were intentional fouls if memory serves me correct. I think he had passed the 20 shot threshold without having gone to the line.

I agree with your thoughts on the turnovers and his star play elevating them at times. With the way he has played so far it will be a great next five years with him at the helm. Between him and Bynum, hopefully, they should be able to contend for a decent seed with role players. Whenever that third man emerges, again, if Bynum pans out, they will rank among the elite.

i'm having a hard time with this team right now. struggling to find a reason any of this matters when it looks more & more like Bynum will be out of the league in 2 years. this franchise is fucked forever. even with the cap space, is there any reason to believe they are going to sign anyone who will have an impact? when is the last time they made a trade or free agent signing that showed any competence whatsoever (i'm talking big moves here, not something like drafting Lavoy in the 2nd rd)? i apologize if i'm being overly negative; it just seems like this is never going to end.

While you might be being overly negative I think your premise is right. I don't think Bynum is going to play for the sixers this year at all but someone is going to give him a 4/5 year deal - I hope it ain't the sixers - and regret it.

I have not yet decided on the nba package just yet - from the free preview and the espn games and the game threads - it seems the only thing worth watching this year is the progression of Jrue. I'm not sure that's worth the 180 bucks

yea man, the last couple games i have been watching haphazardly while getting other stuff done. I enjoy watching Jrue and am paying attention to his development, but I have a hard time caring what happens to this team right now with a roster in flux.

i never had this issue even when they were not so competitive after Iverson left. I always had hope like they were building toward something. i'm not so sure anymore. it just feels like whatever decision they make regarding Bynum is going to be wrong & will set them back another 5 years just like the Brand signing.

I know that the Sixers pick is Top 15 protected this year, but doesn't it turn into two second round picks next year? Not the worst incentive. I'm not inclined to bomb the season just for that, but if Bynum is going to play less than half the season and he makes them fringe playoff candidates, then I would just give him the year off and pay him all the same.

according to this site it's top 12 protected. i didn't realize it was going to Miami from the Moultrie deal either.

I have no idea why everybody is so low on this team right now. I've been reading various posts on various blog and they've all left me perplexed.

- Everybody knew Bynum had knee issues. The fact that he is going to miss games (months) every season was evident from his earlier career. His knee issues this year (and any other year) were EXPECTED. Or did you guys somehow presumed Bynum will be super healthy because ha had a reasonably healthy lockout shortened season? It was still the right trade to make though. You need to risks to win in this league. The risk may pay off. This doesn't mean anything.
- Most people projected them to end up between 40 and 50 wins with Bynum. Without him they probably weren't expected to win more than 25-30.
- Nine games into the season, they are 5-4. As in, SAME AS LAST YEAR (when they went 35-31) without their best player. How can people be so down on the team because of some losses when they have realistically outplayed expectations. Yes, they were terrible against Detroit but every team can be terrible for a game or even a week. Last year the Sixers lost to Washington by 21. And that team was far worse than this Detroit team (regardless of their start).
- Yeah i know the Sixers lost some of their best players in the offseason and without Bynum, they are supposed to be terrible especially defensively. Well guess what, the defense hasn't suffered a bit. They were 3rd last year, they are 4th at the moment.

Bynum played in every game (but the ones he was suspended from) last season - many thought that was him turning the corner.

Bynums continued knee issues - they're not improving - are disheartening

They just lost to the WORST team in the NBA the other night -they got throttled

They're not as good as they were last year - they have holes at the 1 and the 4 - and their 'centers' on the bench even when bynum comes back - suck

Every team has holes. That doesn't mean they can't be successful overall. After all the NBA is a league where matchups matter a lot.

Every team loses to terrible teams every now and then. The Lakers if i'm not mistaken have a losing record against the Bobcats since their inception in the league. That hasn't stopped them of winning titles. The Heat lost 4 games against the Bucks and Wizards last year. The Sixers suffered 20 point losses to the Wizards and the Raptors. Did that prevent them of being successful? No. One game, one week, they don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. The season is long.

And i disagree that they don't have a 4. Thad Young is perfectly capable of playing very well at the 4 especially with the recent "small ball trend". Their real holes are backup PG and post up threat (aka starting C). They might have the latter if Bynum gets healthy. And the guys that will define the ceiling of this team are the wings. They are not bad, but are they good enough?

it's different now because it sounds like his issues are even worse than we thought. he was coming off a healthy season when the trade was announced so there was reason for optimism. and all the news this summer was that he had that non-invasive procedure done, and should be ready for the start of the regular season. then training camp started and everything kept getting pushed back. it's been nothing but more bad news since then, to the point that i seriously question whether he will even be in the league in a couple years.

Bynum's game is not as dependent on athleticism to be successful so even if the injuries do leave a mark on him as an athlete he should still be pretty good. Even guys completely dependent on athleticism have been able to return and play great from worse injuries. Stuodemire in Phoenix had 2 microfracture surgeries that cost him the season and yet was able to come back and play great for a few years.

And if he is injured beyond repair, they can just let him go and go after free agents with the remaining cap space.

The only way the team gets screwed up is if Bynum signs a max with the Sixers and he isn't able to play or is severely limited (but not enough to retire). The front office will have a whole year to figure that out.

Another interesting example:

Remember when the Thunder voided a deal for Tyson Chandler because they felt he had irreparable injury issues. I think he is pretty good don't you think? (On a side note that decision will haunt the Thunder forever as they would have won 5 straight titles with Chandler in addition to Durant and Westbrook)

sure Chandler's dealt with injuries, but nothing in the same stratosphere as Bynum. there is no comparison.

the real question will be whether Bynum gets the Utley or Howard treatment in the...month-plus? two? before he's back

I am not going to let myself get completely bent out of shape over Bynum until I hear "micro fracture surgery out for season our bone on bone." Then I'll be frustrated and stay looking at what their post Bynum plans might entail.

Anyone who is giving up on this team this early in the season is a front runner and not a real fan. They returned only 5 players from last season and are off to a terrible start at 5-4? Every year every team loses games to bad teams ... how many teams do you know that ever win games shooting 30% from the field.

The Bynum situation is literally laughable at this point, since it is starting to sound like the latest problem is a bowling injury. Seriously?

Hang with this team. They will be good, it will just take a little time to figure things out and become consistent. They rose to meet a big challenge against Utah. Let's see if they can string a few together with Cle-Tor-Cle coming up.

has nothing to do with giving up on this team. i'm saying nothing they do even matters because of the absurdity of the Bynum situation. i'll watch Jrue but i'm not investing anything more than that.

Anyone who thinks criticism of a poor start is giving up on the team is foolish. They've played 10 percent of their games and showed major flaws anyone who doesn't see that isn't a rational fan - just a cheerleader

I'm not a doctor, but bowling seems like an activity an athlete recovering from a knee injury should not partake in. It might not seem to be a strenous activity, but it requires coming to a sudden stop, bending your knee, and throwing a ball while your knee in your bended position. If anyone with a medical background wants to tell me I'm wrong, I'd be happy to hear it.

I'm not a doctor but I don't think bowling seems like an activity anyone should partake in

I don't know...but on the foray in question, I sure hope he got a strike

Feels more like the dreaded 7/10 split...he did say something about mirroring itself

i think it's hilarious people still think he is going to play this season. dude can't BOWL without suffering a setback. He'll be D'ing up in the low post in no time!
