Sixers

, all the time

Valiant effort Brian to ignore the elephant in the room. But the Elephant is hovering over us all. Bynum injured his knee bowling. No athlete recovering from a knee injury should go bowling. This is the same Andrew Bynum that put a playboy bunny on his shoulders while rehabbing an injured knee while a member of the Lakers. Its one thing to give a max contract to an injury prone player, its an entirely other thing to give a max contract to an injury prone player who acts irresponsibily while injured.

ojr107 is spot on. I'm not a paid athlete, but a month and a half ago, I tore my medial meniscus, and I'm still recovering. I was invited to go bowling last week, and even I knew that it was a bad idea. How can a man with a max contract lingering in the future, not to mention the hopes of his teammates and current employer, not have any more sense than this?

I was happy they traded for Bynum as he has superstar potential and skill, and it was a risk the Sixers needed to take, but given that he'll miss half this season, showing that his knee issues aren't behind him, and since there's very little reason to believe that knee issues for a 7 foot giant don't get better with age, I won't shed a tear if he heads elsewhere after this season.

Holy cannoli, the guy was bowling. Bowling for fuck's sake. It could have happened during a stroll, during walking his dog or walking on his treadmill.

Nothing has changed for the Sixers. It doesn't matter whether Bynum comes back today, in 2 weeks or 2 months. If he can't stay healthy in the upcoming years the Sixers should not sign him. If there is a chance that he can be healthy, you sign him.

This team wasn't going anywhere, and this trade returned the absolute best you could get for Iggy. If it won't work out this season, you'll have financial flexibility and you'll have had a full season to evaluate the current talent.

Easily the best trade of the last decade.

user-pic
Fatalotti on Nov 18 at 17:38

Definitely a good trade, but maybe you've never been bowling with a creaky knee. Every time you plant, you can feel the pressure on your knee. It is definitely not something one ought to do with the chance of a max contract and the success of one's team hanging in the balance. But Bynum was never known to be prudent in these matters.

user-pic
Phil reply to Fatalotti on Nov 18 at 18:08

I read that he injured his "healthy" left knee while bowling. I just don't think you should expect to get injured while bowling. You can bowl in a pretty relaxing way. Who knows what happened.

user-pic
johnrosz on Nov 18 at 17:59

Not a bowler myself, but the motion is definitely not stress free. You plant your foot, rotate your hips and what not if you do it properly. Not really something you should be doing when you're under order to rest a balky knee.

I'm not going to deal w/ the Bynum situation until he plays a game, or the season ends w/out him playing a game. Right now, it's pretty much the same story as it was on opening night. Get as many wins as you can in the short term. Hopefully, establish Jrue as a legit #2 player on a contender, then see how it all works w/ Bynum in there as the #1 guy. Until he plays, there's really nothing to talk about. It's stupid if he was bowling. I wish he was out there playing right now, but it's all just noise until he's on the floor.

aaand we're off. Kwame loses the tip.

Jrue can't lose Irving and he can't go under picks.

Jrue in the post, maybe? Make Irving work.

JRich block. JRich nice bounce pass thru traffic for the assist.

turner corner 3

user-pic

ET 3!

Corner three for Turner from Jrue. Nice.

Richardson doesn't have a turnover yet this season, btw.

Interesting mention in the pregame by Lynam and Lynam how much better this team is with Kwame boxing guy sout underneath...sounds kind of like they can get a low cost version of what Brand gave them out of him...

Thad on sideshow bob, huh? Good move in defending the P&R if he's the guy setting the picks. Not so good if Varejao starts getting on the offensive glass.

Tristan Thompson might want to think about a diet.

user-pic

Turner had JRich on the cut, turnaround J attempt instead.

nice pass jrue

Drive and kick, Richardson three. Nice.

user-pic

Jrue penetrate, Jrue kickout, JRich BANG!

In the future, give Gee the three instead of closing on him and leaving Waiters open.

user-pic

Hawes miss. That's the 4th good look that hasn't went down.

3/12 start. Come on, not another one of these games.

jrue 3!

Richardson returns the favor w/ a drive and kick to Jrue.

That wasn't a foul why? Richardson got hammered

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 18 at 18:25

Come on Jrue, that was a 4 on 1 I think.

I would've preferred him to put some pressure on the D and then kick out to D Wright for the three.

How did J-Rich not get fouled there?

Fuck me. Had Dorrel on the wing.

Really Malik, Jrue grew up watching Showtime...being born in 1990??

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 18 at 18:27

NYoung J. He doesn't fallaway, wow.

4/14 against this D. Horrid.

Alonzo Gee has a .481 TS, and they're calling plays for him in the post on Nick Young...and we're doubling and fouling him.

Nice move, Hawes.

user-pic

Spencer's so weak in his lower body, can't get any push when he posts up w/ his back to the basket.

Jrue drive and kick to DW for three. Nice.

Jrue penetrate and kickout ....

D3!

Dorell really needed that 3

did anyone else just hear the PA guy say SWAGGY!!!!! after that 3?

PHI 19, CLE 21 after one.

Pretty move by Irving in the paint to shake Jrue.

user-pic

Bad offensive quarter, shots were there, just not falling.

Turner running the point w/ the second unit.

Jrue deflection, JRich steal and layup.

These fucking bigs have to do something when they get the ball on the roll off the p&r or it's going to be a long night. They're doubling Jrue hard on every one of those plays and he's making the right decisions, the bigs just can't finish for shit.

has a big on him settles for jumper/ dont care if it went in

ET and Swaggy are heating up, which means the second half will be either glorious or hilarious...or both no?

Does anyone keep stats on substitutions in a game? Collins kills me with his rotations.

I'm not keeping track this year. no time.

Take the fucking lead here, huh?

user-pic

Jrue splits the double. Teardrop.

Why does this feel like listening to the Eagles earlier today, when Merrill kept saying the Skins were so bad, such an awful team, can't defend and no offense...and yet somehow still ahead the entire time?

Grab the ball.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 18 at 19:02

Grab the effing ball!!!

PHI 43, CLE 42 at the half.

Joke of a half, but came out w/ the lead. Just don't lose this stinking game.

correct me if im wrong but i think turner played the backup pg minutes that half

yup you are correct

Jrue played great D on Irving in that half, at least. Let's hope our shots start falling, we should have no problem winning this game. Should being the key word.

13 assists on 16 fg, 2 turns = good.

14/21 on the defensive glass, 10/32 from inside the arc and only 6 FTA = bad.

Only 5 shots for Jrue, good that he isn't forcing it w/ all these doubles. This I'd like to see him work in isolation a little bit, maybe even get the ball in the post w/ Irving on him.

Man, worst shot-blocking team in the league and the Sixers only have 10 points in the paint.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Nov 18 at 19:20

Jrue blows the bunny.

yep. like he was surpised they weren't challenging it. Rather see Jrue shoot that three.

Turner has a new shot tonight. Lots more arc.

...so THAT is a jump ball but the one earlier wasn't??

Catch the fucking ball Turner.

user-pic

Jrue with an ankle pass to ET. Turnover, bad pass. He keeps jumping in the air and then passing, often bad results.

The Sixers must be last in the league in dunks, no? I mean, Thad gets one every once in a while, J-Rich if he's in transition. That's pretty much it. None of the bigs ever throw one down.

jrue 3!

PHI 62, CLE 57 after three.

Give 12 hard minutes here. Game is yours to take.

Why is Dorell getting zero second half mins? I don't get why he is in the doghouse already?

Yeah, I don't get that either. He must be blowing assignments on D or something.

Man, hope Varejao doesn't get traded to whoever the Sixers face in the first round. Otherwise we're in for another Thad disappearance in the playoffs. 2/7 for 5 points so far.

I like how the big are trying to play tough inside.

Start getting loose, Jrue.

sissy jumper

pretty move Jrue

ET from 22. Makes me puke, but he made it.

jrue's defense there

That was a motherfucking defensive clinic, folks.

Agree with those choices as #1 and #2, but Richardson played a very fine game, too, even though he didn't shoot so well. Nick Young also hit some big shots. Hawes hit some big shots and played with greater energy late in the game.

This team could be pretty darned good if it just had a truly physical presence (like we all know who) in the middle.

9 points on 4/14 from the floor, 4 assists, 5 turns for Kyrie.

14 points on 6/14 from the floor, 9 assists, 2 turns for Jrue.

user-pic
buke reply to Brian on Nov 18 at 20:31

Here's another very favorable game stat:

27 assists, 11 turnovers for the Sixers;
14 assists, 15 turnovers for the Cavs.

man, if Kwame didn't get that blocked shot he would have been a member of club trillion tonight (club 9 trillion actually)

Gee, Cleveland's a bad team. Miles to go before they sleep. Couldn't make their way to playoffs with a Thompson gun. Irving: not a Burgundy Julius.

Sixers 6 wins coming against teams with current composite record of 23-37. Soft schedule to date. More pudding on menu - Raptors & Cavs again - before Saturday Thunderstorm (wear your galoshes!).

On Andrew "Earl Anthony" Bynum's recreational set-back: Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble bowled weekly for a long span in the Sixties without calling in sick to the quarry - but they were good eggs, rock-solid guys; knew Wilma & Betty, Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm, Dino & Hoppy depended on them. Sixers' new acquisition smiles a lot, looks pretty happy on the shelf to me. 16 million and a 16 lb. ball-related injury - synchronicity.

"Wisdom is always an overmatch for strength." - former Bulls & Lakers head coach Phil Jackson

Jrue - 9 & 2, strong defense... now that's pointing to wins.

Nick's electric red sneaks: fitting for a shooter who's at times "lights out."

This is probably my bias talking, but both of those turnovers were on passes to Turner. Both of which I thought were catchable. Turner's butterfingers have been involved in about 12.3% of Jrue's turnovers on the season, to some degree. Not saying they were all good passes, but they were all passes that hit Turner in the hands.

Butterfinger: one excellent snack, crumbly through the bite of the 4th Quarter though. Fifth Avenue and Clark, excellent off-the-bench players - score quickly.

Didn't watch closely enough last night to catch Jrue TOs, thus reserving comment on Turner's hands' loyalty to duty.
