Good work, Brian. Your piece said everything I have been feeling about the coming stretch (and much more). I love the overall pessimistic tone and general bummed outedness too! The Sixers are playing like shite lately and we fans have every right to wallow in our misery. I am so glad I found others to keep me company. I'll be watching over here in Nippon. Go Sixers! Try not to get, err, torched by 20!

Think the tip is at 7.

Um, if this is going to be an issue for Jrue, don't think I've been in borderline tank mode this early in a season since the 'Spoon days during Stackhouse's rookie year. Talk about empty seats that year....

Yep, tip is at 7. My attention to detail is shit these days. Probably too late to tank, anyway. 12 wins, maybe not. Definitely too late in Collins' career, though.

user-pic
TwoSense on Dec 14 at 9:37

Is it a positive sign that Holiday's bad foot is in the black, and his good foot in the red?

I'm just waiting to hear he hurt it ice skating or something, because he said it didn't hurt during the game.

user-pic
TwoSense reply to Brian on Dec 14 at 10:22
+/-

Oh, thought it may have resulted from practicing penalty kicks with his squeeze.

That's one ugly floor.

Boot just a front. The pending brain scan results after 28 shot expo is the real story. Preliminary reading suggests congenital streetballitis along with head coach exacerbation.

If Jrue can't go, his dispensibility will show. Stan Hochman's Turner will go into overdrive. Nick and Dorell will be empowered, get their chances. The game always has taken five in concert to win. Voids are filled most of the time, if you're any kind of team.

Are they "any kind of team," the way you mean?

Iffy. (Certainly not a spiffy team). A few will have to pick their paces, but that's not an impossibility. It's all about hard work and teamwork, not star manufacturing.

If he's out, Turner's going to have to play a much different game at the point for them to have a shot, and even if Turner does worry about setting his teammates up, they have no one to create when Turner goes to the bench. Very, very shallow at the point.

"Roadrunner" Wayns is no small potatoes. Oh, wait, yes he is.

Pro athletes. Surprises always in store. One down, next up.

Basketball is not complex, however, it does require some mastery of fundamentals... seeing, running, catching, dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, cohering, contesting.

Lance Stephenson (ankle) will not play on Friday, and Gerald Green will start in his place.

Evan Turner - if you were ever going to prove something - here's your chance, Iguodala is no longer 'in your way' and Jrue and Bynum are out...time to prove yourself for who you really are

user-pic
MCT reply to GoSixers on Dec 14 at 16:30
+/-

Is it really fair to ask him to "prove something" on the road without a single additional ballhandler on the team with him, in addition to the already garbage front court? He's not a star and we already know that. It's going to be bad to watch, and it won't really say any more or less about Turner.

It's as fair as using the 'IGuodala is blocking him' excuse that was used for 2 years.

It's his time to shine - but pre excusing poor play is similar to how the sammites used to act

user-pic
MCT reply to GoSixers on Dec 14 at 17:10
+/-

How many people actually used to say that? A couple maybe?

It isn't his time to shine, even if he has a great game this is still Jrue's team (as it should be). They will ask him to try and hold the fort down for a game or two, and it will be hard because this team is dogshit without Jrue on the floor. Don't compare me to a "sammite" either, I have been highly critical of Evan Turner over the past year and a half.

Many many people - since he was drafted and hadn't yet played a game

I heard some douchebag on ESPN talk about how turners improvement this year is because Iguodala is gone

user-pic
jay reply to GoSixers on Dec 14 at 17:48
+/-

i don't know about shining or whatever, but if you can't acknowledge how much he's improved this year, I don't know what to tell you. He's using the ball more while being more efficient and keeping up the boarding.

He and Thad going up against the Pacers by themselves and losing would be indicative of little.

At this point a game without Jrue (in addition to Bynum) will be a very very difficult one to win, regardless of the opponent. If Jrue doesn't play it's going to be a chance for everyone else to show what they've got. It's December 15th and everybody is trade eligible now. They should be fighting for their jobs.

It's been a while since there have been some positive stats to throw out there. Well, that's no longer the case.

Zach Lowe recent article on Grantland:

The Evan Turner/Jrue Holiday/Thaddeus Young core is basically set in stone here, and Jason Richardson's shooting has been helpful; the Sixers have outscored opponents by a robust 6.3 points per 100 possessions when those four play together

I dug up further and guess what - The Sixers starting lineup (those four + Lavoy Allen) is the second best 5 man unit in the league in terms of +/-, trailing only the Grizzlies starting lineup.

link: http://www.nba.com/statistics/plusminus/plusminus_sort.jsp?pcomb=5&season=22012&split=9&team=

Now i understand the the Sixers have so far played probably the easiest schedule in the league, but this is definitely some very positive news. Fixing the bench is far easier than fixing anything else on the team.

Confused as to why they won't show any units w/ a negative +/-.

if you want to see something really interesting, trim it to three-player combos for the Sixers only. And look at how dominant Lavoy is in there. link. That's pretty shocking, team seems to just play so much better when he's on the floor, and I don't really think he's played well at all, just when you compare him to Hawes and Kwame...

Yeah, i was shocked too. I think it's more a testament of how bad Hawes and Kwame have been rather than how good Lavoy is. It also shows that really all this team needs is a two way big with solid fundamentals who doesn't shy away from contact and has good size and strength. Lavoy is undersized for a C and struggles when given too big of a role, but his fundamentals are generally solid and that is the reason why his +/- stats look so good on the team.

Me too. I was looking for another site that has this info because of that, but couldn't find one.

Well, the Sixers hired the guy who used to run this site. That's where I used to get that data. That and from the rotation charts I used to keep. Wish I had them for this year, just don't have the time.

Well, at least we can be almost certain that the Sixers organization is aware of this incredible stat :)

I guess it will regress a bit to the mean as this is still a relatively small sample size but when you have a 5 man lineup that is +62 on the season in 230 minutes (almost a quarter of the season so far) and all other lineups are -105 in the remaining 836 minutes, it's pretty obvious where the problem lies.

There are some crazy numbers. Wayns is -50 in less than 100 minutes.

http://tinyurl.com/cumly67

Moultrie -27 in 57 minutes... Thad as usual great in +/-. Only 4 players have positive numbers overall.

Found something!

Basketball-reference has incorporated a lot of great new stuff including "lineup finder". That site is truly becoming the go to site for any kind of NBA advanced stats.

http://tinyurl.com/cs9atcv

The 5man lineups with Kwame and Hawes instead of Lavoy Allen are -17 and -11 in only 58 and 56 minutes respectively.

BETUS.com lists the Sixers as only +5.5 tonight, and even has a Jrue Holiday Assists prop up, so they are certainly assuming he's playing.

Holiday out tonight.

I just recived a tout email from NBA.com that NBA League pass will have a free preview, tonight, December 14th, so everyone should be able to watch this game on cable, or try and get the broadband league pass free?

user-pic

Maybe I missed it, but why the hell is Kwame in there instead of Lavoy? Is it b/c DC wants to protect Lavoy from trouble?

Kwame is a vet - gotta trust those vets

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to GoSixers on Dec 14 at 19:27
+/-

No, I really want to legitimately know if DC started Kwame to keep Lavoy out of foul trouble? I mean, what other reason would you do that?

Veteranability is a serious reason when you're dealing with doug collins

Sometimes there are players that coaches think (rightly or wrongly is up to you) are 'better' coming off the bench - even if they're facing the same players as they would when they start, maybe Doug thinks Lavoy will play 'smarter' if he comes off the bench.

The fact that Spencer Hawes disproves this theory every game, whether he starts or doesn't start is not lost on me.

Eddies, while driving home from work our coach said on sixers pregame that Kwame was brought here for bigs like Hibbert, Dwight and Asik.

Expect a lot of him in the next couple of games. Lavoy's rep in college may have been dead on. It seems like every game one of the coaches is seen giving him an earfull.

Brian's +/- statwork shows why the coachs prod Lavoy so much, they need him to succeed. J.Maxiel would look real good here now. Maybe GoSixers can give his best bud Reggie Evans a call.

Thanks, I guess it makes sense when you think about it but even though Lavoy is smaller size-wise I would venture to guess that he's just as strong as Kwame. It still is sad though to know that our organization brought Kwame friggin' Brown on board to contend with the 'bigger' bigs. That hurts.

I mean, as Brian pointed out in the pregame Hibbert would probably go off vs our sad-sacks so when you look at what he was able to do vs Kwame would Lavoy have fared much worse?

I mentioned in the game thread, Kwame is pretty bad to me, but it's not as glaring because Hawes outdoes him in this regard.

Shot selection sucks! You look at some of the shots that Thad took last night and you say to yourself, "what the hell is he thinking". and he's not the only one.

The shot selection is atrocious. A poor reflection on DC. Get the ball in ET hands, otherwise it's, one-on-one all game long.

Contrary to popular belief, ET runs the offense best. The ball should be in his hands. Let Holiday do what he does best, play off the ball, and score. It's ET time!

user-pic

I go with popular belief on this one. Neither are great pure PG's but jrue has been more accomplished at breaking down the defense. ET occasionally does but out more often results in a pass.

user-pic
buke reply to tk76 on Dec 15 at 12:00

Agree completely. Neither are great at this point but Jrue has the better potential for the position and he's still learning and improving in that role. The bright spot is that Evan demonstrated last night that he could be an adequate lead point guard in the temporary absence of Jrue. He undoubtedly would improve in that role with time, too.

I thought it was a reasonable effort last night considering how outmatched the Sixers were in overall depth of talent and how gassed some of the players looked. Good games from Turner and Hawes and first decent game from Wright in awhile.

user-pic
eddies' heady's on Dec 15 at 11:03

And not for nothing, but Dorell Wright is rather mysterious to me. When I watch him closely it's like he's a borderline D-leaguer or something. He appears extremely lazy at times (as someone pointed out last night), looks majorly out of sync, seems to press and force things while on the court. He's similar to Turner the last couple of years in that he just can't seem to grasp what his role is and how to best play it. Yeah, preseason is preseason but he had me fooled with those showings back then. I really was excited about his prospects and thought we had us a decent role player. He's puzzling to the point that with a certain big man possibly being out there I don't see his troubles being corrected all that much.

And Wayns? Maalik Wayns. Man, he's just awful and that's probably being nice. His only positive in straight-line speed has never been an advantage on a basketball court. As a center fielder, yeah. Point guard, not so much. I seriously would rather see Ivey get those minutes, he may not create much of anything ala Wayns but he's much more calming over the unit and can make an occasional 3 too.

Dorell Wright can't create his own shot, Nick Young can, and that's more pressing right now. I think with Bynum we'll see Dorell feature somewhat more prominently in the wing rotation because of his ability to get out in transition defensively. That's all dependent on him snapping out of his shooting funk, but he's been doing this long enough that I would consider that inevitable.

Good effort. Average game from Thad, maybe they win. The Turner tech was idiotic, that was a blatant double dribble. Hawes 20-footers as the staple of your offense is probably a losing formula.

via LB...how Hawesome is this, and does anyone else think this still happens to him all the time??

Would love to see them find a way to pick up a high energy big who can help out on the boards, like a Maxiell or Collison type (Not that either are available).

It would also be nice to see them get some help on the wing, especially defensively (Tony Allen and Ronnie Brewer come to mind), and I feel that that would allow them to move Turner to the backup point, where I think that he is best suited.

Obviously, none of this is likely to happen, due to the lack of expendable assets (besides Bynum) and the fact that it's the Sixers.

Anderson Varejao - Was a rumor of Bynum to Cleveland before. They can afford to start Zeller and tank, going for one the prize of Nerlens Noel.

Al Jefferson - They could give Kanter some run until Bynum is healthy.

The price on Varejao is going to be high - i asked it earlier if people would trade bynum for him and its possible that the Cavs would demand more

I don't think sitting at 5-19 puts them in a position to bargain much. Everyone knows they're a developing team with Waiters and Thompson being quite unrefined. They are going to listen to all offers and take the best one before the trade deadline. I mean, they have to, right?

The report is that they're looking for a center, Spears is the one who put Bynum's name into the equation, which is silly IMO. Trading Bynum or a guy who is healthy and can give you average to above average production at the five is the last thing I want them doing. With Bynum, they have a shot at contention in the next couple of years. If it doesn't work out, I'd rather they go young than get someone like Al Jefferson who would make them maybe good enough to get the #7 seed. All or nothing w/ Bynum is the right thing to do at this point.

I'm not willing to jump ship either. I would rather have Bynum for 24 minutes a night than Jefferson for 36.

I wonder what DiLeo's opinion is. A $100 million contract to Bynum along with the $40 million given to Jrue and the contracts given Hawes, Richardson, and Turner will limit his ability to make moves. That could cost him his job.

You also don't know the extent of Bynum's injury. He may never be back on the court or he may never be as good as he once was. I wouldn't blame DiLeo if he decided to trade Bynum for a guy like Pecovic, Milsap, or Varajeo in order to cut back any of his losses

Apparently, the 2014 off season is supposed to be a buyers market once the new tax laws are set in.

After last year, when advanced metrics wildly overrated my three least favorite Sixers in Meeks, Lou and Hawes, this year's advanced metrics seems to hold a couple insights which gibe with what my eyes see.

With all the talk of Jrue Holiday's dramatic improvement and inevitable rise to stardom, the advanced metrics are shouting out that thus far he has been a high usage, mediocre efficiency player, that his free throw rate is still subpar and now he's not shooting them as well as he has in the past either AND his three point shot is missing(suspect number one in its heist, his villainous backcourt mate). His counting stats have improved, but he's also using a ton more possessions.

His deficiencies as a point guard become clearer to me. He has no fundamental feel for what's required of the position. The offense he runs is devoid of ball movement. The Chicago gae was particularly ghastly. ALl he did from jump was look for his own shot, utterly neglecting the essential point guard duty to get your teammates involved early and in some semblance of rhythm. Jrue should be looking first and foremost to establish that when he has the ball in his hands. When Evan handles, Jrue should look for his offense by moving aggressively off the ball and getting a steady stream of catch and shoots. We know he can score effectively in that role because he did it last year. Instead, it seems like when Evan is running a possession, Jrue too often seems to be just marking time, waiting to operate the entire offense off his own dribble once order is restored.

Say what you will about Turner's talents as a distributor. Having never played that role for a full meaningful NBA game, I thougt Turner showed good instincts last night. He got other guys involved early, kept going back to Spencer even after he bricked a few opeb js that cost Evan assists, and coaxed forth Spence's best offensive game of the season. With mixed results, he tried deliberately to lead a team, not a production of the Evan Turner Experience. Also credit Evan for at long last making himself into a valuable offball player alongside Jrue, rather than standing around waiting for his turn to dominate the ball.

By the way, Evan outperforms Jrue in every key advanced metric save PER...a better TRUE SHOOTING percentage, if barely, better offensive rating, better defensive rating, more total win shares and a higher ws/forty eight. Plus, he is the competitive heart and soul of the team night in and night out, while Jrue reads his clippinds and tells the media that his next goal is to make the all star team. Well isn't that special, Jrue.

I don't mean to bury Jrue, I don't think he sucks, but I do think he's letting the team's marketing strategy of selling him as something much different and ore advanced than what he is right now to heart far too much. How'd it work out the last time our marketing department rushed a young player;s development in orderto sell tickets?

It sees like many need a reminder that there's more to the point guard position than COUNTING STATS!

user-pic
mymanjrue on Dec 16 at 0:24
+/-

I think Jrue's biggest contribution to the team coes at the defensive end, but that has been spotty, too inconsistent , likely due to the burden he shoulders night in night out on the other end.

Even when Jrue really has game going and he's firing on all cylinders as a distributor...against Charlotte out of the gates, for instance, when he nearly had ten assists in a single quarter...it still leaves me wanting more from my cornerstone point guard. I wonder what percentage of his assists have come on the one and only pass of the possession? His scoring and his distribution both come off the bounce. So when Jrue begins to struggle to get to his spots at will, the whole house of cards comes down. We've seen how problematic this is when teams begin gameplanning to take away Jrue's ability to get where he wants to, ala Boston and OKC.

When he had that big second half against Detroit, it was by way of adjusting to a shoot first, gunner's mentality...more in common with Monta Ells or Brandon Jennings than Chris Paul. Turner had a couple passes to set up guys open at the rim for layups that were more impressive to me than much of what I see from Jrue, because he saw a window open up for an easy layup and fired the pass exactly when he had to. unfortunately, Spence went up like a sissy on one of those plays and blew it, but still. The approach is what I' trying to get at, and looking to exploit every opportunity for easy buckets for this jump shooting offense means more to me than the ease with which Jrue creats open mid and long range jupers that the opposing defense is thrilled with

I'm glad you found Turner's 5 assist, 5 turnover game at the point so dazzling. Also interesting that you pick the OKC game to show how Jrue can't adjust to having a team gameplan to stop him. 13 assists to 2 turnovers in that game.

user-pic
mymanjrue reply to Brian on Dec 16 at 16:11

Brian, thanks for the flippant reply using a counting stat of dubious worth to turn what was a horseshit game on both ends for Jrue(Westbrook stole his lunch money, Collins saved the game by calling on Turner to check him after he got whatever he wanted against Jrue), which the team would have lost by double digits without Turner, into something it wasn't.

Sorry, if you need me to do the math for you, I will. A 6.5 to 1, assist to turnover ratio. Or we can calculate his assist rate, if you like. Point is, a defense focused on stopping him, and he set his teammates up.

I do find it kind of funny that when you're tearing down Jrue, you attempt to use advanced stats, but in support of Turner it's a bunch of nonsense that can't be quantified. Jrue is an inefficient gunner, but no mention that Turner's efficiency is pretty much the same, with 5% less usage. Turner does a much better job of running the offense, but no mention of the 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, or the 95.7 OFR when he was running the show. It's poppycock, to put it bluntly. And I've already spent more time responding than these asinine comments warrant.

user-pic
mymanjrue reply to Brian on Dec 16 at 18:09
+/-

I didn't say that Turner did a better job runnning the offense in one game...I said he showed me an instinctive grasp of some of the integral aspects of being an effective NBA point over the long haul

I also didn't say that Turner was markedly more efficient than Jrue. Isaid that Turner has made great strides in that part of his game while Jrue has not, and has been slightly more efficient than Jrue of late. THis related to my point about how Jrue's 'leap' is all many influential voices in local media and the blogosphere(kudos to being right there on the same page with Marcus Hayes, John Mitchell and the rest of the Sixers' PR teams pet stenographers on this issue, btw), pimping Jrue for Most Improved, etc, when Turner is the starter in the backcourt who has actually, by all objective measures, improved most markedly.

I'm sorry if I come across as dogging Jrue...I root hard for Jrue...guess I would have more positive things to say about him if there weren't already so many people performing that task so ably.

Advanced stats tell a story and I've found them helpful on many occasions...now this doesn't mean, by any stretch, that I'll write off the career of a second year players with thirty starts under his belt on the basis of a dreadful playoff PER rating...my eyes are always going to be my first resource...you can't tell me that Turner's aggressiveness did not help spur that game four win against Boston despite a dreadful statistical showing...you also can't tell me that certain metrics didn't wildly overrate Lou's contributions lastyear when I saw with my own eyes how he ground the offense to a halt down the stretch f multiple close gamesand excelled more than anything else at getting his in garbage time

it's funny that you say I'm holding Jrue and Turner do different standards when I was making the point that solely by the standards of advanced metrics, Turner'simprobement has been far more dramatic and he has actually slightly outperformed Jrue in many categories

Jrue's hefty assist rate in forty minutes of being the ball handler and facilitator on a team where Turner is the only other guy consistently handing out assists at all...well, I'll take it with a grain of salt. What say you of Turner coming close to matching Jrue's assist numbers from last year with a less prominent ball handling role?

Simply put, i disagree. Jrue maybe isn't the type of point guard we want him to be, but he is very very effective in what he does. Jrue is essentially above average in every facet of the game, something that not a single point guard in the league can say. He is not the best, or even elite in any area, but being very good in everything makes him a future star regardless. He doesn't have the best court vision in the league, but he is top 10 in that regard which paired with his top 10 penetration and finishing ability makes him an extremely tough cover for the opposition. Rose won an MVP and is one of the best players in the league and he is far from a very good passer and has limited court vision. The more i watch Jrue, the more i see a Deron Williams in him and i am more than happy with that.

As for Turner, i don't disagree that Turner is better at the PG spot than given credit, but i don't think he is better than Jrue. Overall, Jrue + Turner have the potential to become a deadly backcourt duo because both of them are extremely versatile and can do pretty much anything on the court. All they need to make the Sixers a true contender is a legit low post threat and defender (...oh wait!!!) and a glue guy (Thad).

I agre that Turner and Jrue can become a really great backcourt combination, as their skills are complementary. Like I mentioned, however, I see a lot more effort on Turner's part to mesh with Jrue than vice versa

And look, I agree with many of your positive points about Holiday. I like Holiday. I think he'll be a big part of this team for a long time. Just feel like the starmaking campaign is over done and will harm him long term. Encourage everyone to take a step back

Well, Well, I haven't been here much this season, so I was surprised to see that you're still here speaking, "Truth to Power". It's tough being 1 against 40, I applaud your efforts.

Although you're right don't expect DC to change course. For some strange reason, as soon as he got here, he made the bold prediction that Holiday would be a top 5 PG within 2 years. The idea that he'll back off that, admit he's wrong, and make a position change isn't going to happen. So we're stuck with our PG pounding the ball and making his iso moves, which all too often ends in a bad shot while the other guys stand around and watch. The problem is it effects the whole team, everyone starts thinking once they get a touch, "better shoot it now, I'll never get another chance", (think Thad Young). Playing that way leads to an inordinate number of bad/difficult shots and a low shooting percentage.

Finally, I'm looking hard at Doug Collins as the source of our problems. I'm also starting to believe that he's better suited to be behind the mic, instead of in the coaching box. That motivational stuff only goes so far, at some point you've got to know something about x's an o's, and therein lies the problem.

ha, thanks for the support, Steve. It does get lonely but only, it seems, on the Internet. Going by anecdotal evidence, a lot of Sixers fans feel like we do. Whenever I go to a game it seems like all the other vocal fans in my vicinity are, like me, calling to get the ball to Evan.

I couldn't agree more with the points you raise. They have indeed become a team full of ball stoppers Seems like Thad has decided that if he gets the ball in the halfcourt, he's shooting it, come hell or high water. It
s not a healthy situation and it's very ugly to watch. Then you have Thad's ominous recent comment about it being difficukt for the bigs to go all out on d when they never touch the ball early in the game.Red flag!

Collins needs to go. His head games are what he considers to be his talent. His ganeplans have been notably ill advised on several occasions, and he is loath to make significant adjustments. On the offensive end, there simply is no gameplan

Ge couldn't help himself last night, yanking Turner for a mistake which I woyld have to see the play by play to recall with a couple minutes left in the first half. Turner up to that point was having a terrific game. Collins yanks him it what seemed an obvious punishment, ET spends the halftime period thinking oh great all my work is for nothing here I go again with coach and comes out for the second half with zero confidence. ghost of christmas past.

Stein on what the cavs want for Varrejao

The Cavs, sources say, want multiple young assets in return for the 30-year-old, who is averaging 14.3 points and 14.8 rebounds and possesses a very manageable contract that calls for Varejao to receive $9.1 million next season with a $9.8 million team option in 2014-15. The Thunder are the rare title contender also blessed with the sort of youth/stashed draft picks to appeal to Cleveland, but sources say OKC has shown little interest to date.
