Welcome Home...Now Win A Game

Skiles got canned, huh? Wonder what that means for the Bucks.

I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to clean house to be honest. That team is so poorly constructed, i can't see any way they can turn that into a contender.

I wonder if some of the big men they have is available. They've got some interesting young big men: Henson, Udoh, Sanders. Oh, yeah, they also have our favorite Sammy who is somehow completely out of the rotation. I would love to have Henson on the team at this point.

If they're going to move one, I doubt it's one of the young ones. I bet Ilyasova could be had, though. Pretty big gamble w/ his performance this year and the length of the contract, though.

Hawes/Turner/Kwame for Ilyasova/Beno/Udoh.

I'd stay away from Ilyasova unless he comes in package with Henson. There is a reason why i didn't like him at all in the summer. I stay away from players who suddenly perform well in a contract year. He can get better (like Turner his game is based on confidence quite a bit), but definitely not worth anywhere near the money he is getting right now.

user-pic
Stan reply to Brian on Jan 8 at 11:36
+/-

I'm a little wary of Ilyasova as well, but I'm all for it if all it takes to get him is Hawes. I don't watch many Bucks games but a lot of people bitch about his defense and his effort.

I would make that trade but I'm assuming that they would want Lavoy instead of Kwame.

user-pic
SixersRising on Jan 8 at 10:05

I'm guessing that means they drop like a rock. I didn't like the move they made of getting Monta Ellis to combine with Jennings. They seemed to have a lot of talent and then undermined it by spending a lot of money on a one way player. Not the way to get more competitive in the East if you ask me.

Skiles is a good coach. I think he got a lot out of the talent he has. IMO makes a Sixers playoff competitor a lot weaker.

Scott, a pug with bite. Don't know about his coaching abilities but I tip my cap for his Dec. '90 22 pts/6 rbs/30 assists game against Paul Westhead's runnin', gunnin' Nuggets (Michael Adams & Chris Jackson).

The Monta deal was really the final straw in a series of really bad moves by Hammond. He won executive of the year and everyone was so enamored with him because he fixed their cap situation in his first year or two, then he spent that money on Maggette and Drew Gooden. Then parlayed Maggette into Stephen Jackson. Really, they've never recovered from those two foolish signings. Now he's just got a mishmash of a roster with a really bad piece screwing it up further to the tune of a 28% usage rate.

do not switch any pick and roll more specifically the Williams and Johnson one, they want you to switch so they have a mismatch

Yeah, they switch those so easily, it's maddening.

I haven't see BKY since PJ took over, wondering how many changes he's made.

Just realized how difficult the recent stretch of games for the Sixers has been.

http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerrankings/_/sort/sosL10

They've had by far the hardest schedule over the last 10 games in the NBA. Their opponents have a combined 60% winning percentage (the next closest team is at 57%) and they've played 9 of those 10 games on the road. An absolutely insane scheduling quirk.

After a relatively easy start, they now have played the second hardest schedule in the east (behind the Celtics). I definitely expect them to get better at home. Hopefully they realized they can't drop games like the one against Detroit earlier in the season. Just how good they can be though before Bynum comes back is a question mark.

Detroit, Cleveland, Phoenix. Those are the three they'll look back at and kick themselves if they fall a game or two short of something significant.

Of course, that can be said about everyone. If OKC doesn't have home court for a big series, they'll probably look back at losing to the Wizards last night.

I'm not as mad about the Cavs and suns losses. Those were tough situations. Second night of a back to back on the road against rested teams.

Well, they've got the exact same situation in Toronto tomorrow night.

Another interesting stat:

The Sixers opponents over the last 10 games were a combined 121-53 when playing at home (or in Atlanta's case on the road where they are 9-6). That's a winning percentage of 30%. How many of those games did the Sixers win? Three or exactly 30% of them.

Essentially they continued to perform as an average NBA team (41win team). I'd argue they performed worse earlier in the season than of late. The 4 games Jrue missed really killed them IMO.

I'm hoping they are re-energized by the somewhat positive Bynum news yesterday. If they can be near .500 when he comes back, they have a lot to be excited about.

user-pic
Stan reply to MikeW on Jan 8 at 11:58

I feel like that Bynum news is just a cock tease. He won't return till the end of the season in order prove that he's healthy enough for a max contract.

Suns interested in Gay. Need a facilitator. this works.

Did the NBA change its trade rules so you can trade as much money as human possible?

You really believe someones taking on THAT contract with the way the big reactionary has played this year?

they might think about it if they are so focused on getting under the tax line

though im not sure this deal gets them under

i would not play dougs trash offense. i would unleash jrue and evan to RUN, to push the bal every single time. i would demand it.

they would be better players and the team proabbly would have won a handful of the close ones hteyve lost, thats the short answer.

who could've done WORSE?

wseriously, how you run their offense in a less interesting or productive way?it gravely offends my sensibilities as a basketball fan. they play with a pace designed to makimize halfcourt possessions but their offense is unwatchable in the halfcourt.

Just because Doug can't relinquish control

Jrue's turns would probably actually be lower if they got out in transition aggressively. Most of his turn overs happen when he's trying to force some moribund halfcourt set into action.

his entire offense is dribble handoffs , pick and pops, and jrue weaving through defenders. the only effective part of it is the one part that doug has relinquished control of.

seriously his coaching this year has been indefensible

OH, i for got the horns plays that brian loves. those emerged after ocllins announcced with fanfare that he had new sets he used to use with grant hill in detroit.

this set, chosen without doubt more for the opportunity to associate himself with grant hill it provided than anything else, have been proven both utterly unsuited to getting good shots for turner and just as poorly conceived as all the rest of doug collin's offense.

but yes let's blame the players, who must obey the coach or belabelled as cancers and venomously denounced by the kind of people who ascribe negative character traits to all young black men and especially young black men with millions of dollars yet know him to be a fraud and a tyrant. all those young guys on the sixers want to have long nba careers. they want to do well. no one is guiding them. stop defending the man please

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to mymanjrue on Jan 9 at 0:26

First, you've got to have at least one guy, ONE, that's worthy of securing a board consistently to release an outlet pass for the pups to RUN.

Second, you've got to have several legit defenders, SEVERAL individually (and majority legit collectively), to garner stops for aforementioned outlets and breaks.

Third, you're the first person I've ever come across that could turn chicken shit into chicken salad.

Finally, I'm not defending the man to the degree you're making me out to be. I'm saying it's ludicrous as hell to absolve these mostly borderline NBA rotation, low-IQ players of blame. No matter how much disdain anyone has for the man, how do you ignore or marginalize what he's actually got to work with?

"First, you've got to have at least one guy, ONE, that's worthy of securing a board consistently to release an outlet pass for the pups to RUN."

WoThink real hard about that one eddie's. Nobody on the Sixers can release an outlet pass?

again i am kind of amazed that youre serious, because you only point out a role in which Evan Turner could excel in college, it was a big part of his game. he is clearly discouraged from throwing those passes on the sixers though, splus the sixers aren't encouraged to run, meaning that instead of pushing the ball in transition off turner's boards he is doing the bolt upthe fllor and jack a jeven if it's contested thing. ideally turner would push the ball just about every timeand. the threat of transition offense and protection against the outlet make the turner coast to coast plays way more likely to be effective as well. in stead of shooting from eighttn feet, he can likely push below the foul line before pulling up and sometime go to the rim. and he wouldn't be doing it more than once or twice a game
if you recall those games against new york, utah and boston last year, when one of the best transition finishers in the league was still on our team, that is what got people so excited. turner was finally playing HIS game. he has had many very good games this year, but he has never played HIS game in the same this season because the pace like molasses eliminates one of et's biggest strengths, and a way in which he can boost his confidence and stay engaged when he is not putting the ball in the basket

turner has been mia of late, i think he has quit on the coach along with thad and jrue(jrue is not quite as miserable as the other too because he is the pet but he is bucking at the leash. after he misses the asg iwho knows_)

There are three guys on the roster who it is the coach's responsibility to put into a position to improved and succede. jrue, evan, and thad. he has murdered the career of one, lpushed boy scout, respectful jrue to the very limit, and is openly despised by thad young, who looks even more miserable than he did during last season's late swoon when if i recall correctly tales of thad-0doug tension made their way to the press

YOU'RE RIGHT that there are some bums on the team. whose bumminess can't be blamed on doug.

but what's he done to evan is without doubt grave malpractice, now in its third year. ijrue is motivated to make the all star game so he does that, a

the three best guys on the team, all young and in various ways developing, are giving right now than i can reacall from any of them. even evan, it's not like he's sulking ala freshman campaign and too mch of sophomore, he justdoesn't seem interested in the game.

they haven't put out efforts this terrible since the last time they were hoping the coach might get canned, last spring when sliding out of the playoffs looked very possible

what the record of dougs last sixty five or so games we the sixers?

check it out

but i guess you're right, IT WOULD ALL BE MUCH WORSE IIF DOUG WEREN"T THERE TO PROTECT US FROM FAST BREAKS

That quote you quoted flew right over your head, no? The Sixers don't have anyone "worthy of consistently securing a board" to release said outlet pass. Come on.

And your infatuation and love affair with Evan Turner in general, but more specifically the referencing of his college game and small sample size of NBA games, leads me to believe the cloud is too thick for you to see through stunting further discussion.

You blame for Doug for Evan's struggles, I call a spade a spade and say that at some point a player is what he is irrespective of level of coaching.

There's one more bum on the team according to me, one less to you. Time will bear out the glaring light shining through. You'll come around. Except my expectation is that it will still be someone else's or some thing's fault.

doug's focus is on preserving his career winning percentage(it's a long way from fifty one to forty nine) and trying to turn his guards into refkections os him on the court, like video game players

how insane is it that a team distinguished by its touth plays at one of the slowest paces i the league?it's not like they want to get to the halfcourt and feed their dominant big man. they play slow because doug micromanages, cons and ttantly yelling out instructions in a distracting way that leaves guys looking to the bench instead of just playing basketball

i also wouldn't make it professional policy to systematically eliminate the self confidence of top five draft picks(you know, the most valuable assets a franchise has)

hen leave the franchise in three years. doug did it at his last job and he's done it at this job

any coach with half a brain would have seen that turner's outsize confidence, while obnoxious at times, gives him the edge he needs to be aggressive. confidence is his entire game. any coach with half a brain would have been encouraging evan to be the man, talking him up, saying he was a winner etc.

watch the youtube highlights of turners first nba game sometime, vs miami. watch him driving the lane and finishing. where did that guy go?

collins has a track redord of doing this to young players who are at all sensitive.

with turner he looked at that confidence, which any sane coach would embraced and set out to destroy it. he was pretty open about that.

but sure let's blame the kids entering the league for the first time not the grown ass grandfather whos been around the league forty years

Nah, there was no need to, I got the relevant 20% of it. Basically, you'd have won ~5 more games than Doug, essentially turning funky shit into tolerable shit. It's still shit.

The senses are much relieved, myself is disappointed though, as it looks like you'd be suffering the same fate of losing the team, only I guess your version would have whip cream and a cherry on top.

Assuming you have kids for a second, do you blame the kid for striking out at T-ball (T-ball!), or the Granddad for making the kid shed tears in the backyard two weeks prior by telling him to stop undercutting at the ball and swing level, even though the kid's ego skyrocketed when he made contact ONE time for a pop-up that dropped in front of the plate?

i would of course give my make believe child the tips. but i wouldn't say "no you're doing it wrong, let me show you the right way to swing" i'd say something corny like "i remember when i learned how to swing a baseball bat, it was so much easier after when showed me these tricks..."

that way you buoy the kid's confidence, and you also relate the information in a more emmorable way, making the advice more likely to be followed

So, you'd coddle him, never hardening him up and watch him keep striking out. Just like Turner, I guess. Fitting.

You make everything sound oh so simple, yet you'd only squeeze enough blood out of this turnip to achieve .500? Only 5 more games better than Doug?

The chicken salad needs a tad more mayonnaise. Relish too.

on the bright side, in quitting on p douglas collins, jrue and evan are following in the footsteps of michael jordan, scottie pippen, and grant hill

Of course they haven't tuned him out - it was half time - doug made adjustments - and the sixers got bitchslapped after a close first half - adjustments are awesome

Well this is awful

if you dont lose your voice screaming vicious insults at our team and its coach tonight i am disappointed

So it seems Carmelo is the one finally calling out KG for being a punk ass name calling fool?

didnt charlie V do it a couple years ago also, just hes not melo

I got the impression melo headed to the locker room after the game to kick KG's little butt.

Swear to god - if i ran an nba team - i'd hire that reikert guy to comment every time against the celtics

Hey Jrue

What happened after the first quarter?

he thought to himself, well...i tried

swear to god he has an inordinate number of games like this...one hot run, then when het gets back on the floor his focus seems to have wandered.

he shot the ball eleven times, i think four times in the second half as the nets pulled away. and it's not like he was focusing on setting guys up...ywo dimes in the last three quarters

Jrue is a strange guy to follow. When he plays like he did in the first quarter

Like I said, Jrue's fault. Stop being so mean to Turner.

against gs and portland he had really exciting, great third quarters, doing it all, making good decisions..then returned in the fourth and made baffling decision after baffling decision

Player of the game: Jason Kapono

It would've been great if Turner could've kept up the "really, I'm a legit NBA player" act up long enough for them to trade him for something worthwhile. Instead, we get to watch the Kei Igawa of the NBA for another year and a half.

Obscure Japanese Over rated yankees pitcher

You just busted your own dollar bill out didn't you

There is no better parallel for Turner. Complete stud in Japan. Couldn't get anyone out in the majors. Dominated in AAA for years. Just like Turner will when he winds up in the d-league, or Greece.

Now Collins is blaming the refs for not getting calls. He blames the road trip, then the schedule. Then he makes excuses that they are tired or injured. When does he accept responsibility for this fiasco? He pushed out Thorn. No other GM would come here, and Deleo was the only puppet that would work for Collins. The Bynum trade was driven by Collins who forced it to win now. He has no vested interest in a long term plan of building a team through the draft because he won't be here in 3 years. Having your head coach have all the power is ruining this team. He sacrificed the franchises future (and gave up 3 first round picks) for his short term goals. Serves Josh Harris right for being scared of Collins and giving him the keys to the car with no oversight.

3 mid-firsts isn't going to rebuild a franchise. They got younger I the Bynum trade. If you want to criticize Collins moves this summer, criticize Kwame and Hawes.

My main regret tonight is that my laptop is across the room, and there's no way I can spew a significant amount of venom typing with my thumbs on this iPad.

This team has one legit starter and 3 legit rotational players currently active on their roster. That's it.

Hey guys - I think we need to invest some money cause seems like Brian lost his legs :)

Speaking of... which one is better, Amazon Prime or Netflix? (in terms of available instant movies or shows)

I like amazon better, personally.

Think personally might've been redundant in that sentence.

I ended up having both since the amazon since is just a byproduct of a prime subscription I already have. I primarily use netflix due to having it 'built in' on my one tv and easy to access on the apple tv on the other. Though each have their own 'exclusives', in general I've found that the variety is mostly the same - focused on tv shows and WAY too few movies available (for my liking) except for crap.

I don't know about the online amazon search function, but the online netflix function blows serious chunks, the suggestion algorithm is a piece of garbage.

Though on the plus side, netflix is getting arrested development new episodes

Yeah, I have a Roku player, with Netflix and Amazon. We really only use Netflix for the kids (I've been wanting to cancel it, but the tease of arrested development keeps me hanging in. When is that supposed to come out?)

Three things I like about Amazon (1) I think the selection of free (to Prime subs) stuff is better (2) Search function is good and (3) Their pay-per-view is really good, better than DirecTV (cheaper, better selection) and that option isn't even available on Netflix online (or at least it wasn't the last time I checked).

1. Arrested Development - no set date yet - probably spring - supposedly each episode is a 'vignette' to focus on a certain character's evolution since the finale to set up a movie

2. Netflix does not have pay per view options at all - it's not part of their service - it's either streaming or it's not - we are currently catching up on 30 rock since we weren't avid viewers in the beginning

3. Amazon prime isn't compatible with my apple tv yet :)

I highly recommend the Roku player. HDMI hookup, really easy to use and you can access pretty much everything. Love Amazon's cloud.

Apple TV has the HDMI hook up as well - cost the same as the roku - since i'm kind of an apple slut I bought it - it does have pay per view movies through itunes but sadly it doesn't stream them - that's right - you gotta download the whole movie before you watch it - which limits interruptions - but it takes 45 minutes via wireless to download a movie

If i had to do it again I'd get the roku - but hadn't heard of it yet at the time

where is kate fagan with the details avg texts a night between doug and jrue

dc was by all accounts a selfish player, i guess it
s no surprise he is absurdly selfish as a coach. the guy is a narcissist. i will neverforget his postgame last year after a big home win over boston that paused a skid and preserved the division lead

doug came to the podium in tears and started telling a bizarre story about his daughter eavesdropping on his grandson's prayers. i thought he had finally snapped until he got to the the clincher, "and she heard him pray that grand dad gets his four hundredth win'

a big team win and he completely ignores it to congratulate himself at length and with feeling

it was really a sick thing to see on your television scren

they played like they wanted it vs the lakers because they wanted to get the win for jrue.

remember turner ruching over to holiday for the full body bro hug after buzzer?he genuinely looked thrilled for jrue

wouldn't it be wild if someone got paid seven figures annually just to make sure they were that motivated to play every night?

i know, crazy. i'm just a dreamer folks, what can i say

Wouldn't it be great if guys getting paid seven figures to play a fucking game didn't need to be coddled? Or were motivated enough not to compound being unathletic with being an out of shape fatass at the ripe age of 24.

Guaranteed contracts guarantee that some guys are going to loaf - they're getting paid no matter what.

i am so feeling malik's rose visceral disgust at the prevalence of the pick and pop in the sixers offense. lately you cat count on about five comments a game that say in so many words "at awesome play...if one of these pussies had rolled to the basket'

followed wby the inevitable 'by popp

Watching the game I was thinking the same thing that Brian mentioned. This team has one above average starter and a few guys who are arguably above average NBA players.

Really, I could care less if they brought back anyone on this roster other than Jrue. And as much as I like to root for Thad, they might as well trade him if he is going to be just another soft player on a soft team. If Bynum was ever healthy then Thad will be a nice fit. But if Bynum never materializes, they probably should trade Thad since he has value.

Watching this team it dawns on you just how bad this roster is after the Bynum trade... without Bynum. Jrue has played over his head, but even so they are not anywhere even close to being medicocre. They are bad- and the incredibly weak opening schedule hid that briefly.

They are not as bad as the 5-15 they have played over the last 20 games. That would be a 21 win team. But I don't think they are a 35 win team without Bynum.

Yep. You've got Jrue who's good enough to start for anyone, then Thad and Wright who are decent pieces if you've got a guy like Bynum in the middle and then absolutely nothing. The rest of the team is basically a series of barely warm bodies who contribute once every half dozen games when their long twos are falling and range from below average to laughable at the basic skills their positions require.

I get the impulse to be fed up with Collins, but it shouldn't be about his coaching, it should be about all the moves he made prior to the Bynum trade. Those moves are why they are as bad as they are right now. Those moves and completely blowing the #2 pick.

user-pic
Rob_STC reply to Brian on Jan 9 at 8:53

Agree with that. Still can't understand why if Collins is such a brilliant basketball mind what the hell he sees in Hawes to sign him to a 2 year contract along with Kwame. And when they had the #2 pick they still had no big man and there were big men available. That is why it is maddening when people say "tank". Even a high draft pick doesn't mean you will get lucky or even know what to do with that pick. Goes back to the problems with the NBA. Too few star players to go around for 30 teams. Unless you are a "bright lights" destination star free agents won't go there. It is very tough to get out of mediocrity. The Sixers thought they made moves to do that. Unfortunately it is not happening with this group of players. I can't stand the fact that everything is a jump shot and this is the softest team in the league. They don't even play fast. When you don't have an identity you aren't going to win. I mean what is the strength of this team ?

Concerning your last paragraph, are we dumping this 100% in Doug's lap? Does Thorn get off scotch free here? DiLeo's hands clean too?

I've heard thorn is more of a cognac man

Mixed bag. All the signings this summer I put directly on Doug. Think he was 100% the man making the decisions. Don't think he was behind the Turner pick, though. That one was on Stefanski, I believe (wasn't that right before Thorn waltzed in?) and DiLeo, who should've been able to use his scouting expertise to expose an imposter using 3 years of experience against 18-year-olds, a height advantage and a shitty conference to boost his numbers.
