Looking To Make NOH #2 of Many

Here's a fun question to get you through the day. Make the best starting five (keeping guys in their positions, can't pick two pg's) from the lottery only in the past five drafts. Which one is the best unit? Here are mine:

2012:
Lillard, Beal, MKG, A. Davis, A. Drummond

2011:
Irving, K. Thompson, M. Morris, M. Morris, Valanciunas

2010:
Wall, Hayward, P. George, Favors, Monroe

2009:
Curry, Harden, DeRozan, Griffin, Thabeet

2008:
Rose, E. Gordon, Gallinari, Love, B. Lopez

I'd probably put my money on the 2008 squad. Right now, you sub in Westbrook for Rose, if they're both healthy, I'd go with Rose.

The 2008 draft was definitely the strongest in recent memory.

Here are my picks:

2008: Rose, Gordon, Gallinari (Batum), Love, Lopez (Asik)

You can make the case for a number of big men at a similar level (Hibbert, Pekovic...). Depending on health Westbrook and Mayo could be ahead of Rose and Gordon.

2009: Rubio, Harden, Evans, Griffin, Thabeet (Mullens)

The year of the PGs. You can make the case for a number of them (Holiday, Curry, Lawson, Jennings). Thabeet and Mullens are the only C in the draft, teams needing a C were in trouble.

2010: Wall (Vasquez), Turner, George, Favors, Monroe

Worst draft in recent memory. You can make the case for Hayward over Turner (they are similar players) and Bledsoe and Bradley at PG. Depending on what you think of him you can probably make the case for Cousins as well.

2011: Irving, Thompson, Williams (Leonard), Thompson(Faried), Valanciunas

A draft with a lot of projects who still have time to develop. You can probably make the case for Kanter or Vucevic over Valanciunas.

2012: Lillard, Beal, Kidd-Gilchrist, Davis, Drummond

Way to early to evaluate this class. Early results suggest that it was a top heavy draft, very few rotation level players or even projects out of the lottery.

The players in brackets are players that i would choose without the lottery limitation.

Hayward and Turner aren't really close in my mind.

I actually like Hayward as a player and i think he might develop into a good one but he has his weaknesses. Right now, the only advantage he has over Turner is as a shooter. And he actually has a post presence that provides enough spacing for him. We'll see he might end up the better player, but right now i'd say Turner gets a slight edge.

I'm not in the pro Turner club nor am i a hater, but i'd like to see how he plays out the season especially with Bynum before i make up my mind on him. I always try not to make a final decision on players before they have 3 complete seasons under their belt.

The only thing Hayward is better at is the prerequisite for the position :)

Didn't the Sixers opt to take NO's 2nd round pick instead of Greivis Vasquez and Xavier Henry? what a shame.

where did you hear that?

It was a rumor from last year. Memphis wanted to give up Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez for Speights. Sixers didn't want them, so NO stepped in for a 3 team trade, and the Sixers got 2-2nd round picks instead.

I can't tell much difference between the two, Wilkins may actually be a tad bit better at D as lazy as ET's been on that end lately.

he probably is better on D, slightly, but that's absurd to say you can't tell the difference on offense. This is not a pro Turner rant, he sucks, but Wilkins is beyond bad.

user-pic
johnrosz on Jan 15 at 22:13

I have a hard time blaming Doug the coach, but think Doug the GM has been very culpable in this disaster. If they were to let him go, or the rumblings start, I would understand. I think he's been kinda mediocre this year, the offense is painful. I watch them draw it up out of timeouts and somehow Damien Wilkins or Royal Ivey will end up with shots. Or they constantly mismanage the 2 for 1, don't exploit mismatches on the offensive end, or go to the well when something is actually working. I don't think it's fair to blame him for everything, but when he becomes pissy like he's been in the post game pressers lately, hard for me to feel too bad for him. The team is just poorly constructed, even with Bynum I don't think this roster is competitive. Terrible.

This team has no prayer to come back from a big deficit. Collins rode that bench group too long at the beginning of the fourth. If he brings Jrue in for Turner with 8 to go, they might've had a shot.

Terrible loss. Vasquez impressed me, Jrue kept his pressure up all night and Vasquez handled it well, for the most part. Six turns, but he didn't back down.

Jrue is potg, not that it matters.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Jan 15 at 23:30
+/-

Why would Jrue coming in earlier make any difference? They couldn't get stops at any time in this game, including when he was on the court.

Because Turner was doing nothing on offense and getting torched on D. Basically serving no purpose on the floor. Get another offensive weapon out there earlier. Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but would've had a better shot.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Jan 15 at 23:45
+/-

this isn't a Turner argument, he fucking sucks and I agree that giving him less minutes gives us a better chance to win in general...but tonight, everyone sucked on D including Jrue...he got torched more than anyone, but he made up for it by carrying the offense (save for Nick Young's fluke 5 mins)...bottom line, it didn't matter who was in, they were awful on defense tonight

Not disagreeing about the defense. Just saying better chance if you have another offensive weapon out there. My point was that Collins stuck with that unit because they went on a little run, but what he didn't recognize is that Turner was doing nothing, worse than nothing. So instead of rewarding the entire unit basically for Nick Young's work, get the weak link out, bring in Jrue to play with Young and maybe keep him hot.

user-pic
MCT reply to Brian on Jan 15 at 23:59
+/-

I just think it would be like saying you have a better chance to win Powerball if you buy 5 tickets instead of 1. The odds are better but basically still impossible.

But you're right in this sense, Jrue is the only bright spot on the team and Thad is the only one after him who is consistent, and gives consistent effort. Tough times for this squad right now.

user-pic
johnrosz on Jan 15 at 23:17

Iggy is stinking it up tonight in Denver. Just hit a big 3 in OT though

Totally agree with @johnrosz. When will media hold Collins accountable for HIS personnel decisions?? He squeezed out Thorn, and Deleo was the only person who would take the "GM" job having to report to Collins. I blame ownership for caving to Collins and giving him way to much control. GM and head coach need to be separate to avoid the inherent conflict of interest of a coach who needs to win now and a GM who should be planning for the future. John Mitchell the only writer with the guts to ask Collins a tough question. Rest of media is in his pocket and scared of Colkins. He tried To intimidate Mitchell after he asked the question. Let's hope some other Philly sports writers have the guts to do their job and hold Collins accountable for his coaching and personnel decisions. He has gotten the love fest from the media for too long

What was the question?

You gotta be kidding me. Mitchell is the worst writer i have ever read an article from.

He asked if the players have tuned Collins out, and Collins freaked

It didn't look to me like the effort wasn't there tonight. Just looked like they're a bad team. Can't defend a pick and roll to save their lives if both the pg and the big have a pulse. The guy who was supposed to take over for Iguodala as their wing stopper is pitiful. Their bigs are either slow, soft or both. Even their defensive specialists off the bench can't defend anyone. The offense is either Jrue scoring, Jrue spoon feeding someone an open look off penetration, or like a 35% shot taken or created by someone else. They were literally putting three guys on Jrue in the third quarter. The pg, the big in the p&r and another big, and it didn't matter. Their only hope was still Jrue somehow escaping and getting into the lane. The next time Turner moves without the ball will be the first time.

The thing that hurt the offense the most tonight was Thad being off. He missed a bunch of easy looks, but that probably didn't matter either. It was just too easy for NOH to generate good looks, even when the ball pressure was good.

user-pic
johnrosz on Jan 16 at 1:15

I think some of you will rip on me for this, but I'd like to see Tony D run the show again, I really enjoyed his stint as interim HC. I loved the way he schemed against the Magic in that first round series. I loved the way he used Iggy, and Thad, they actually drew up plays out of timeouts that worked. They just flowed together nicely, he squeezed quality minutes out of guys like Donyell Marshall and Theo on his last legs.

Think people ragged on him because he's quiet and a mellow guy, but he knows his x's and o's.

I never had a problem with DiLeo, i liked him during his brief stint. That being said Collins is a better coach than him. These losses are not a result of the players tuning him out or him not being able to coach. They are a result of a serious lack of talent.

user-pic
Rob_STC reply to Xsago on Jan 16 at 8:11

What bothers me about Collins is that he wanted to get Hawes resigned. Not sure if he had visions of making Hawes a poor man's Pau Gasol but the guy is an absolute stiff. Hawes and Allen has a combined 2 rebounds in 36 minutes. If you are out there that long rebounds are going to fall in your lap. So Collins says the team lacks speed on the wings and no rim protection so that pretty much says this team that was put together with a terrible roster.Didn't Collins have a hand in acquiring some of the personnel ? I hate to say it but this very much looks every bit as bad as the Eddie Jordan year. Even that team had more athleticism than this one.

I'd say Collins had more than a hand in putting the roster together. He was calling all the shots this summer.

Collins as a de facto GM? We'll see how he performs in the long run. I am just evaluating him as a coach. And as a coach he is pretty good.

I think a lot of you mix his coaching performance with the fact that he resigned Hawes when evaluating him as a coach, which is simply wrong.

user-pic
eddies' heady's reply to Xsago on Jan 16 at 9:40

Totally agree with this. Funny how the tuning him out chatter died down after a win on Saturday night. Wed night loss to TOR and cries of he's lost the team. Saturday night win vs HOU and Doug is the rally-king adjustment-maestro. Lose to NOH last night and they've tuned him out again. Hilarious when the one constant is the talent never changed.

Tough loss to that pesky 12-26 New Orleans team. Mad respect to Evan Turner, who continues to keep his cool with refs when it's clear he's given no respect from them, ever. We've got a bright future with him. Let's just hope Bynum is back soon for a few games to show everyone what he can really do and we can sign him to a 5-year contract, missing cartilage and arthritis problems and 200 or so missed regular season games be damned.
