Which Teams Will Show Up?

Man, Jrue has been about as bad as you can be in the second half of the season. Really disappointed by his play.

If you look at his month to month stats, Holiday peaked in January (a very good month for him) and has been steadily declining since. In the 24 games since the all star break he has shot 39% from the field. In retrospect the all star hype followed by his selection may have been a curse. Too much too soon.

I think Jrue is not as focused to the game as he used to be. After the allstar break, ever since he realized that the Sixers are not going to make the playoffs he has not been the same. I don't expect much in the last few games.

I do expect him to come back even better next year though, assuming the Sixers don't go into full tanking mode before the season even begins.

I was very pleasantly surprised with last night's game. Unfortunately, I think we can figure out exactly what to expect in tonight's game. On regular rest I'd like the Sixers chances to make this a very competitive game.

Based on the pattern that's been evident in virtually every back to back game since the first of the year, I expect very poor performances from both Jrue and Thad. Don't know whether it is poor physical conditioning or inability to focus mentally - but these guys seem to be worse than average players whenever there is a back to back situation.

Poor play by Jrue and Thad in the same game typically translates to the Sixers being blown out. Expect a 20+ point loss tonight.

Here's hoping I'm as wrong. Glad the Phillies will be on to switch back and forth in case things get just too ugly.

Did you read Brian's pregame write-up? No Lebron, no Wade, and no Ray Allen either. I'm not expecting a blowout. Miami performed well against the Bobcats last night but their starters are Bosch, Mike Miller, Chalmers, Haslem, and Rashard Lewis. Of course they still have a better bench than we do with Battier, Bird Andersen, Norris Cole, Joel Anthony, and James Jones.

‏@Sixers 15s
Update: Coach Spoelstra says Bosh (sore knee) & Wade (ankle) will not play tonight; James (hamstring) is probable, but w/ limited minutes.

The one thing that is at stake in our remaining games is whether we finish 11th in the lottery or 12th. (Toronto's now 2.5 games behind us and I doubt we catch them.) Portland's now just 1.5 games behind us for the 11th spot, having lost 7 straight. Portland may have very different priorities than us; their rookie center, Meyers Leonard, has played well in some recent games. On the other hand, perhaps their biggest need, 2 guard (with all respect to Wesley Matthews), is one we share, so it's possible that their picking ahead of us could affect who we get. Especially if we decide we want to bring Bynum back.

I will repost this with more detail in a later thread, but I just want to say that whatever oscillations we see in Jrue's shooting the rest of the season, the numbers Jrue's put up for this year are not at all out of character for him. They're only slightly worse than his last two years, and some decline in inefficiency is to be expected with the big usage uptick. Further, if you look at his shooting splits, he's shooting respectably from all parts of the court. He's shooting almost 39% on long twos, a good, above-average number, and 60% at the rim, also a decent number (and as high as he's ever been in his career). The problem is just that he's a volume mid-range jump shooter and doesn't get to the rim *that* much, which is totally to be expected given his less than stellar quickness and athleticism. Besides, the distribution of the shots he's taken hasn't changed significantly over the last few years, so this isn't a new thing either. He's never gotten to the line a whole lot, and our coach isn't one of the handful of coaches who hugely emphasizes taking a ton of threes, so unless we hire one of them, that won't change either. I think Jrue will forever be a relatively inefficient scorer.

-33 for turner. some bad luk involved there, but he didnt look good tonight, despite continuing his reasonably efficient scoring streak with fourteen on ten shots. he was playing an awful lot of point in the second half. went pretty well in the third, not so much in the fourth. jrue broke out of his shooting slump by moving off the ball for a healthy chunk of the second half. again, this worked out ok in the third when jrue hit 3/3 from three, but even with those made threes, only managed 18 on 17 shots. TS% on the right side of fifty, but just barely. had some success in the second quarter especially as a distributor, as the team dug out of their first quarter hole...3 pts,6 assists in the first half; `15 pts, 0 assists in the second half. his ballhandling was very sloppy at times though, some bad tos

In case anybody missed it - the quintessential Iguodala play: gets the steal on one end, some fancy dribble moves and alley oop to the Manimal. http://youtu.be/vUaNZPi4iUw

Funny how much fun basketball looks when there are actual athletic big men on the roster.

Vucevic may never amount to all that much, but he does put up some impressive lines. Today, he put up a rare 21/21/6/2 (blocks). Only 12 other players have ever done that since 1985, and Vucevic is the youngest player to do it since 1985 by about six months; perhaps the worst player to do it before Vucevic was Joe Barry Carroll, the #1 draft pick in 1985, one-time All Star, runner up in the ROY voting to Derrick Coleman and, more notably, someone who averaged 20, 8 and 2 blocks over his first six seasons. The other names are Barkley (four times), Terry Cummings, Divac (twice), Duncan, Garnett (seven times), Malone, Noah, Dirk, Olajuwon, Robinson, and Webber (twice). Of course, it's a lot more impressive in today's slower-paced NBA; there have been only 9 such games since 2000, each, with the possible exception of Noah's, by a future Hall of Famer. Joe Barry Carroll had his 21/21/6/2 game in a 150-147 squeaker.

user-pic
buke reply to Tray on Apr 7 at 22:37
+/-

Ah...your time line concerning Joe Barry Carroll is a little off if I am reading it correctly.

Joe Barry Carroll played in the 1980 final four so he would have left Purdue well before 1985. And he couldn't have competed with Derrick Coleman for rookie of the year because Coleman was a freshman in college when he played for losing team Syracuse in the 1987 national championship. I don't believe Coleman came to the NBA until 1989 or 1990.

user-pic
Tray reply to buke on Apr 8 at 0:08
+/-

Yes. I blame the article I read on his career. It said these things. I should've realized anyway though, because when I figured out his stats I saw his rookie season was 1980.

user-pic
buke reply to Tray on Apr 8 at 15:27
+/-

Well, you might consider not accepting that source for your research anymore. Those things I pointed out about Joe Barry Carroll I just knew because of historical memory. I didn't bother to check any of the other statements, but if the author can't even state a reasonably accurate time line, I wouldn't have confidence in anything he writes.

I blame such examples of shoddy journalism partially on the emphasis of sensitivity and self-esteem over quality that is manifest in modern educational philosophies. We were ridiculed when we made stupid and utterly avoidable mistakes. The little extra effort was worth the avoidance of ridicule. Today that is considered bullying.

user-pic
Tray reply to buke on Apr 8 at 15:32
+/-

I mean, if you thought about this for a moment you'd probably realize that, unless the source was Wikipedia, any source of Joe Barry Carroll info probably wouldn't be a source I would turn to regularly for other matters. In this case it was a Purdue blog.

user-pic
mymanjrue reply to buke on Apr 8 at 15:52
+/-

another reason for the shift you describe is the proliferation of sources...in the internet age, standards for publication are much lower. Some dude running a purdue basketball blog can do shoddy work and hit publish and turn up in your joe barry carroll google search-pre-0internet there was significantly more vetting involved prior to content getting published.

As a kid I was reading a biography-I think it was FDR-and talking about it with my grandmother-she told me, in a memorable way, that I should never accept one person's perspective as word-and that it's important to consider the source of information and opinions. That stuck with me and i've found it a very valuable thing to keep in mind

Man, take a look at how much this Rice thing is costing Rutgers. Or should I say take a look at how much money Rutgers is paying to try to make this whole thing just go away. They should be firing both the coach and the AD with cause and not paying them a cent, but the President is covering his own ass. At least that's my take.
