Where is MCW? Last three games no blow.

Stan reply to Jswigga on Nov 18 at 18:45

He's going to sit out this road trip. Should be back for their next home game.

I wouldn't call Nowitzki one of the worst defenders in the league at his position. He's improved greatly as a team defender over the years. He's not really a rim protector or a great rebounder, but his fundamentals and positioning are decent.

Calderon and Ellis though, really are bad.

Aaaaaand we're off...Hawes wins the tip.

Dallas is starting Jae Crowder instead of Dalembert.

Wroten misses a three on the first possession. Wroten is shooting 23.8% from three on 3.9 attempts/game, which is not good offense.

Turner misses a bad jumper, Dirk misses a late-transition three on the other end. Thad blows a bunny, Wroten gets blocked, Crowder throws the outlet pass away. Sloppy favors the poor team.

3 minutes in, 0-0.

Turner breaks the seal with a long-two off the dribble. Yay!

sissy 3!

You missed maybe the sloppiest collective 3 minutes of basketball I've ever seen.

Sissy three with the quick release.

I gotta say, think sitting Dalembert was a stupid move on Dallas' part.

Not sure I've ever seen him dribble with his right hand period.

anderson to hawes

nice pass

Lavoy working the o-boards.

et corner 3!

on the second try

Turner bricks a corner three, gets it right back and hits the second time.

Of course, the thing that goes unnoticed there is Turner never moved a step after missing the three. If Thompson hadn't come down with the offensive board, it would've been a fast break going the other way with Turner standing there holding his follow through in the corner.

game so far looks like a run at the Y

Barry Larkin isn't in the stands at the Y.

I missed that grade b sighting. Schottzie would be more amusing, not to mention miraculous. And I wonder who Pete picked tonight.

Pete always bets on the home team. Don't think Schottie would enjoy the pigmentation on the floor.

Why so?

21-18 after one.

Dallas missed a ton of open shots in the first, if the defense doesn't improve, they're going to lose by 20 easy when the shots start falling.

Does Dallas always employ this zone? Or just vs. us? We seem to be having some success against it.

My feelings on the zone in the NBA: It's what bad defensive teams do to try to hide the fact that they're bad defensive teams. So I assume the Mavs use it all the time.

DAL uses it more than the average team(even did it in the finals 2 years ago)

I realize my Turner commentary has probably gone overboard, and I'm going to keep it in check going forward, but first an honest question. When was the last time, on either end of the floor, Turner did something where you were like "wow, great effort."

user-pic
Geese reply to Brian on Nov 19 at 0:10
+/-

When was the last time I said "wow, great effort" on the part of Evan Turner?

Honest answer?
Every game that he scores 20+ points. Without Evan's 20+ points per night the Sixers would have actually been blown out in every game so far this year & in games where he doesn't put up points they have been blown out.

As for tonight? I don't have a problem with Evan Turner because slop shot or not, it goes in. It gets blocked? Then it gets blocked. But that drive in the final four minutes where he got fouled & got no call was blatant. I already knew he was gonna explode because it was a blatant no-call when the game was in the balance. He got hit with the tech, not shocked. And? Not pissed about it.

Overall?

Turner has shown that his slop shot & shitty dribbling is GOOD ENOUGH to be in the NBA & I wish him the best! And I'm enjoying watching him play this year, especially without Doug Collins & Jrue Holiday being here.

Could you do a recap post (like you used to) describing all the awful things he did? Or maybe just a recap comment? I'd enjoy that. Hopefully GM's will just see the gaudy stat line.

Those used to be a lot of fun. Not sure i have the stomach for this one.

Basically, from the start of the fourth, he missed two jumpers, had 4 shots blocked (it was actually five, but they didn't count one and he wound up scoring on the play), missed 2 free throws, failed to get back on defense because he was complaining about a no-call, which resulted in a wide-open three for Calderon, then got called for a technical foul when they got the ball back... Oh, and he let about 9 seconds go off the clock in a four-point game with 20 seconds left because he didn't want to commit the foul and foul out of the game.

Oh, almost forget the behind-the-back dribble into the first row, turning the ball over with a minute to go, and the delay of game violation. It really was a thing of beauty. Obviously Doug Collims' fault. But hey, doesn't matter. He's going to get paid and he scored 26 points!!!

buke reply to Tray on Nov 19 at 13:39

Wow! Not only do you revel in a player's meltdown, you need someone to help you relive it. That request says a lot about you and and what it says isn't good.

To be fair, that was a monumental meltdown. It's rare someone is left on the floor to do that much damage in a single quarter.

He got hacked a couple of times, although not as many as he thinks, and got a make up call at one point. I think Brown also wanted to send a message to the refs that this is an aggressive team that will eventually force their hand by attacking the rack constantly. It didn't pan out the way, but I think it bodes well going forward. On another note, Evan operating as the workhorse and driving twice for every one pull-up attempt is probably better than anything else we have right now.

I'd rather have spencer killing kittens

user-pic
buke reply to Brian on Nov 19 at 19:40

Wasn't the whole quarter. Probably less than half of the quarter. Up until that point he was having one of his best games of the season, maybe even one of the better games of his career. There have been rumors about Dallas as a possible trade partner and up until he lost it, he was making a favorable impression.

I don't care if he was getting mauled. If what he's doing stops working, he needs to learn to shut up, back off, and find another way to score (hopefully one involving the rest of his teammates). He's been great at the free throw line this year but he even missed two of them once he got into his frenzy. From what is reported today, he seems to understand that he messed up. One can only hope.

Well, it started pretty much immediately when he came into the game at the 10:37 mark, and he had that behind-the-back turnover with 0:59 left, then he decided not to foul so he wouldn't foul out of the game with 20 seconds left. So we're talking about 10 minutes plus.

The guy imploded, not sure why the apologists are still defending him, but whatever. I'm counting the turnovers and bricks until he's killing some other team.

user-pic
Stan reply to Brian on Nov 19 at 20:55

He only had 3 personal fouls. Thad was the one who had 5.

Then I have no idea what the hell he was doing not fouling. I guess he thought his sick defense would cause a turnover.

I hope they don't wind up with Marcus Smart in the draft.

user-pic
Tray reply to buke on Nov 19 at 16:28

Relive it? I never saw the game, had no idea what happened. Just wanted to be informed.

I hope Brooklyn misses the playoffs, gets a high lottery pick(right after the Sixers pick), and has that pick swapped with the Hawks. Atlanta's pick would then go to the Celtics.

If the Sixers get a top 3 pick, I hope it's #1 or #3. I really don't want #2. #2 has not been kind to the Sixers. The Sixers first #2 pick was Marvin Barnes in 1974. He never played for them.
I don't know why they drafted him:

"In 1972, while playing center for Providence College, he attacked a teammate with a tire iron. He later pled guilty to assault, paid the victim $10,000 and was placed on probation. He violated probation in October 1976 when an unloaded gun was found in his bag at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and served 152 days in Rhode Island state prison. Upon release he returned to the Detroit Pistons. He has been arrested for burglary, drug possession, and trespassing. Because of his drug use, his NBA career was cut short and he wound up homeless in San Diego, California in the early 1980s."

It doesn't end there:

"The flight leaves Louisville at 8 pm and is scheduled to arrive in St. Louis at 7:56 pm. Upon reading the flight itinerary he becomes confused and asks how can this be, someone breaks down the time zones and how St. Louis is an hour behind Louisville. He says that they can cancel his ticket because “I ain’t gettin’ on no time machine!” He proceeded to rent a car for the trip."

"I remember (while playing for the Celtics) I had just come out of the game and was sitting at the end of the bench. Before I had come out for warmups, I had stashed a bag of coke into my jacket pocket. Now I put a towel over my head and began snorting the stuff. I think Nate Archibald or Don Chaney saw what I was doing because when I looked up, I saw them both scrambling to sit as far away from me as they could."

Yeah, ESPN just aired a documentary on the Spirits of St. Louis a few weeks ago. It was interesting and the first time I had ever heard of this guy and that team. Dr. J mentioned in the documentary that Marvin Barnes was one of the best ever and couldn't be stopped.

It's a must see for any basketball enthusiast if ESPN reruns it (which they should).

Here's an article:

The Silna brothers get a percentage of the NBA's TV money in perpetuity, yes.

Can't say I am a huge Marcus Smart fan, but I do expect him to get a lot of attention and stay in the top 5 category. Great defensive instinct. Noticeable improvement in his jump shot as well... I just don't know how much a true pg he will be (part of that is due to his role as more of a scorer in this offense).

Perhaps I am drinking the cool-aid, but I am really buying into this draft hype.

It is still early, but who do we see as the best type of guard to pair with MCW. I actually think Turner helps his development now because he handles the ball and takes some pressure off of him (sort of) but down the line I picture more of a jump shooter, ideally a Ray Allen/Klay Thompson type.

user-pic
Stan reply to Rusty on Nov 20 at 12:17

I don't understand why he didn't declare in last year's crappy draft. He would have been a top 5 pick. This year he has to compete with Wigggins, Parker, Randle, Gordon, Embid, Harris, Exum, and Selden.

He didn't declare because he didn't think he was ready and there were some things he wanted to improve in his game to make him more NBA ready. Now if those things have actually improved I can't tell you but his thought process to me makes sense.

Or he just didn't want to go to Cleveland - which also makes sense

Wow, the Philly media is adapting to Hinkie: usage rate and sport VU tracking data used in a philly.com article

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pattisonave/drives-evan-turner-key.html

Michael is a philly.com blogger, but he's a 'new age' guy. He's actually also a philadunkia blogger.

Also, Rich Hofmann puts up a weekly article there as well. Philly.com has traditional beats, and a 'blogging' section. The blogging section is much more relevant.

Are the comments much less awful?

Tonight is a key game in the tanking / competitive argument...Toronto isn't good and also have a 'new school' GM who might be trying to move an over rated asset (Rudy Gay).

Raptors are a weird team. They've been outscored on the season by just 0.2 points a game, to our 6.2 points a game, but they're 4-7 with two overtime losses to top Western Conference teams. They have the lowest pace in the league. They have the tenth ranked defense but they give up an above-average shooting percentage. They have a league-average offense, but are 27th in the league in shooting and only pull it off by leading the league in offensive rebounding, having a low turnover rate, and getting to the line a lot. The three guys who shoot the most from the floor for them, Gay, DeRozan and Lowry, shoot .382, .404, and .386 from the floor respectively, although Gay and DeRozan are shooting the three well enough. Only Lowry gets to the line much, but their big men get to the line a ton; Hansbrough is taking almost 9 foul shots per 10 shots from the field, an absurd number. IF their defense continues to be as decent as it's been, they ought to be an okay team, as Gay and DeRozan and Lowry won't shoot 38-40% all season. Of course, they could regress in some other area besides defense, like their dominance of the offensive glass.

user-pic
Tray reply to Tray on Nov 20 at 12:09

Of course, Toronto was a lousy defensive team last year, but that team played Calderon and Bargnani and Jonas was a rookie who played 23 minutes a game. This team, with Lowry and Jonas and Amir Johnson and Gay (an underrated defender), has some potential. Last year, their current starting lineup gave up 92.5 points per 100 possessions.

MCW went through shootaround, he thinks he can play but the final word will come from the coaches so he is probably a GTD

Only 8 of 12 - not golden arches. 'Reds' Braun would've given it a go by now.

Not worth risking anything unless he's 100%

yep last thing i want to see is his arch injury turn into an Achilles injury

First thing I want to see the latest, greatest golden calf do is shoot 40%. Think he's got it in him. Even Pearl Washington shot .452 in 194 career games.

Probably will depend more on shout selection as opposed to shoot making.

I've actually enjoyed watching Wroten in his place. His relentless attack mode is sometimes ill advised but fun to watch. Sort of like watching the A Team, except the plan only occasionally comes together... But just as fearless and brash.

user-pic

Or shot selection

Got a hard J. But he's Parnelli Jones to the hoop most laps. Has a natural advantage as it's tough guarding lefties - - squirrelly son of a guns; a counterintuitive task, even for rapt, committed defenders.

Wroten, fierce, wild as the wind, young as Miley Cyrus.

but you want to stick with shoot making :)
