A Battle For First...Seriously

‏@WojYahooNBA Philadelphia has waived Kwame Brown and Darius Morris, league source tells Yahoo Sports

Anybody understand the Darius Morris part?

Must be a trade in the works. Can't see any other reason for it...

wow, really? That's so strange, not the Kwame part, but the Darius part. They're short handed without him. Didn't think he was playing that poorly, either.

Yeah, i mean it has to be because of a trade, but i have no idea how Davies/Thompson survived and Morris didn't. I mean he was the best non-Wroten player on the bench right? I guess Hinkie thinks there is untapped potential in them and not in Morris...

Maybe it's Turner to Dallas and we're getting Larkin as part of the package in return. That would be sweet. Maybe they were showcasing Larkin the other night.

And Dallas does that why?

Interesting - I forgot Kwame was even on the roster

Dallas is the team that signed Monta. Wouldn't shock me if they liked Turner. Same type of player, minus any shred of athleticism. They don't really have a three, either. Marion's more of a four, no handle at all. I could see it.

MCW will play tonight

no minute restriction according to brown

this only gives them 9 healthy players

so i think they will be adding a player soon

If it's Asik / Hawes / Orlando - I want a cookie :)

When Royce White was cut it seemed a big reason why was his meltdown and tech in a pre season game so maybe et could be going now

I'm willing to bet the reason was more than just one game - and I doubt evan turner would be traded for just one game either (plus - evan turner doesn't make tons of money - why so much roster space needed)

Looking forward to the news - make another good splash Sammy

On Daily News Live - Elliot Williams and Lorenzo Brown signed by the Sixers.

Well poo - that's no fun at all

Bleh, that's a Stefanski-like move.

Actually, it's a Hinkie move. Stefanski would've signed Royal Ivey. Or Chris Duhon. Or someone like that.

I agree with Xsage - Stef would bring in 'veteran presence'

I think Sam was bored, and wanted to mess with people - I LIKE IT

Good. I was not a fan of Morris in the slightest. He did not bulk up at all in three years and could not run an offense whatsoever.

wasnt eddies' heady's the big lorenzo brown fan?

Not so much a big fan, only just mentioned the day he got cut from Minny that I got wind from a source that the Sixers were interested in him. And asked on here had anyone heard the same, as I had no idea how reliable the source was, but no one replied. Guess the guy knew something or another.

no thad young tonight(personal reasons)

Daniel Orton starting for him

Wow, the Sixers are already tanking...

MCW missed 4 games, now Thad...

Wow, Orton and Hawes up front. This should be interesting.

If Toronto wants to run, their bigs should have no trouble beating our bigs down the floor tonight. Perimeter guys need to keep the floor balanced, which has been a huge issue.

eddies' heady's reply to Brian on Nov 20 at 19:22

Lo Brown is a natural combo guard, but was converted to PG after Ryan Harrow transferred to Kentucky. His handle is loose and his shot is questionable, has decent athleticism. His on- and off-ball D in college was bad, gambles for steals though.

Think Eliot was a SG. At least he was recruited as one at Duke.

Curious as hell to the thought processes behind closed doors with management. Morris was really not playing bad at all, he was surprisingly decent as a backup. Wonder do they just want to see what Lo Brown or Eliot can do, or did they think Morris was 'helping' out too much. Maybe they had enough of a look-see.

POTG is clearly Hawes, if you want to win.

If you're a pro-tanker, MCW and Turner really battle it out for most damage done to the team. Turner turned in a sparkling 4/13 from the floor (5/6 from the line), with 3 turnovers and 4 of his shots were blocked. An impressive .416 TS. Stellar.

MCW in his first game back from injury shot 2/10 from the floor (5/5 from the line) with 5 turnovers. .369 TS. Extra-stellar.

Who gets your vote for tanker of the game?

I'm so close to spending the $50 to sponsor Evan Turner's B-R.com page with a friendly "Please trade this bum" message.

Wonder where Spiller has been since game 7? Figured he'd love to talk about Turner being exactly who he's always been (maybe worse). link

The sixers currently have the fourth worst point differential in the NBA.

It's all happening!

4th worst isn't good enough.

True - but the trend is in the 'right' direction - wouldn't you say?

Is it not? Besides the real chance at #4 of winning the whole lottery, like NOP in 2012, the draft could get so scrambled this year that the best player could go third. For instance, some team picks first and thinks to themselves, Randle was the best player in college basketball this season and franchise bigs still are essential. So they pick Randle. Next team picks and they're wowed by Parker, like him better than Wiggins on the basis of intangibles/production/polish. If we move to third, we get the most talented player in the draft. That actually seems like a perfectly plausible scenario. Or, suppose Wiggins goes first. Then a team like Utah or Sacramento that's "set" up front goes second, so they pick Parker, or even Exum if they're smart. Then we could get Randle, who at the least should be a dominant offensive force in the NBA. You could even dream up a scenario where a team in the top three picks Smart. Orlando probably needs a point guard more than anything else. For that matter, there are teams that might like Gordon better than Randle on the basis of makeup. NBA GM's can be kind of stupid at times; some may look at Randle and see Cousins. My point isn't that there's so much talent in the draft that the 4th best player will necessarily be great, but that there's so much talent in the draft that the teams who pick at the very top could screw up identifying who the first and second and third best players are.

I want the worst record so we have a guaranteed top 4 pick. That's my main motivation.

Worst record gives us a 64% chance at a top 3 pick and a 100% chance at a top 4 pick. 3rd worst record gives us a 47% chance at a top 3 pick, 22.6% chance at 4th pick and 26.5% chance at 5th pick. I'd sleep much better at night with the worst record.

As for best player going 3rd, of course. But if you have faith in Hinkie, you want him to have his choice between as many as possible, not leave fate up to the mistakes of other GM's.

I think most of us really want the worst record. We understand the percentages and are fully on board with it. I just don't think not having the worst record but still having a bottom 3-4 record is the end of the world though.

I think between a top 5 pick, cap space, the pelicans pick and three solid prospects/players in MCW, Noel and Thad, Hinkie has plenty to work with. Not having the worst record is not optimal, but as long as you are in the top 5 it's enough to be in position to build a young team that can become a future perennial contender.

I definitely want to end up top 3. I like Exum and Gordon, but I don't think they're on the same level. Not having worst record isn't the end of the world, but it will cause me more anxiety between the end of the season and the lottery.

I have a top 4+1 at the moment, but it really is too early to tell.

Anyway, for some reason, i think Exum and Gordon are exactly the type of prospects that could thrive in the player development environment the Sixers are creating. In a way, i think Wiggins, Exum and Gordon might be higher on Hinkie's board than Parker and Randle. They completely fit the athletes that need to develop their jump shot to succeed strategy the Sixers have started this year. Gordon especially, looks to me like a boom or bust prospect that could thrive in the right team that knows how to develop him like George/Leonard/Ibaka/Batum but could get lost on the wrong team D.Williams/Vesely/Aminu/(Kidd-Gilchrist???).

MKG's doing alright as of late.

He's not a lost cause yet. That's why i put question marks next to him :). He hasn't been great though and certainly nowhere near number 2 pick in the draft worthy. His shot looks completely broken and i haven't seen any improvement in it from last year. I still have hopes for him, but i think he needs to get out of Charlotte ASAP.

user-pic
Tray reply to Xsago on Nov 22 at 17:52
+/-

I guess my quibble is more that MKG isn't lost, he just was never more than a poor man's Iguodala in the first place. This year he's not taking a lot of shots he can't make and is coming closer to fulfilling his potential.

The Sixers are about a sixth through the season and have won 2 games more than expected in their first 13. They are on pace for about 31 wins as opposed to 19 had they 3 wins right now instead of 5.

If the wheels fall off now then I doubt 2 winds has a huge impact. Probably 25 winds or less puts them in position to draft an impact player. But I would not be surprised if they continue to steal games to where they get closer to 30 games. Bottom 5 is key, so it will be interesting.

I have zero worries that they will finish in the bottom 5. They won't finish 30th because it's impossible to out-tank the worst team in the west (the disparity between the eastern and western conferences has never been bigger), but will be very bad. Their point differential suggests much less than 30 wins anyway and Hinkie will make sure they'll be even worse by trading some players.

I'm not really sure why people make such a big deal of the 'disparity' - 56 games are exactly the same - plus two head to head, 70% of the season is identical

True, and in a normal year the difference in strength between conferences, is not represented by more than 2 wins in either way. This year though the difference is enormous (at least so far). The west is winning almost 70% of the inter-conference games (35-17) so far. That's a ton. As a result the number of wins by the worst western team will be less than usual. Those 3-5 wins are more than enough to ensure finishing with the worst record IMO.

Magic Carter-Williams was wandless, whiney and a while from winsome.

Turner is settling into a groove - leading league SFs in shot attempts blocked.

Spencer rising for bitcoin.

Statistically speaking, Kwame peaked early - 3rd yr, age 21 for 25-57 Wiz. Then grew some into gruesome. Met fan expectations here in Philadelphia. 22 games and 269 minutes is hardly enough for a fellow to find his niche, but he succeeded. Last year's .368 free throw results (7-19) were nettlesome, hard to abide going forward I suppose.

Raptors-Sixers was an unsavory serving of NBA goulash. Imagine the majesty of the Christiana-Landenberg-Cecil County 87ers product. "I-95 S - and step on it!"

An interesting (sad?) development this year:

12 of the top 17 teams (14 of the top 21) in Hollinger's rankings are from the west. Essentially, the only truly bad Western team is Utah, which is dead last as a result (they haven't faced an eastern team at home so far)

http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerrankings/_/page/2

In other words Sacramento would be a playoff team in the eastern conference. Yikes!

P.S. Sixers are 27th right now.

The Sixers have now played their last 5 games missing one of their best 4 players (MagicCW and now Thad) and are 1-4 in those games. The team is bad either way, but it seems like they can steal wins when their best players are healthy, but completely hopeless with one out.

Last year was similar- the Sixers played 10 games without Thad or Jrue (Hawes and ET played all 82.) The Sixers were 1-9 in those games, and 33-39 in the games when they were healthy.

So the team needs either a Jeff Gillooly shot or a trade and then I think all will be well in terms of their future drafting needs.

And you know at least one of their three "veterans" will be traded probably after the December 15 deadline for players signed in the offseason.

No way, no how. I trade this guy. He's terrible. Why take back salary on him? Let him get out of town quietly. The perfect Tank Commander. He'll get paid alright, as the 10th Man somewhere. A legend in his own mind.

I think the Brooklyn Nets might be in the worst situation right now in the league. The gave up the #3 overall pick in 2010, the #3 overall pick in 2011, the #6 overall pick in 2012, and the #18 and #21 overall picks in 2013 to build their 3-8 team. Their 2014 pick can be swapped with Atlanta's pick and then given to Boston. They have to give up their 2016 and 2018 1st round draft picks to Boston and they might have to swap their 1st round picks in 2015 and 2017. The Nets are paying $80 million in luxury tax alone for their roster and even if KG were to retire, the Nets would be capped out until 2016. Deron Williams has been terrible all season because of his injuries. He might be the next Gilbert Arenas. As bad as Stefanski was he was an improvement over Billy King. It's going to be funny to see the Nets repeat this cycle again with Kevin Durant in 2016.
