, all the time

I read some column yesterday that suggested that no matter how far the Yankees fall behind in the AL East, Joe Torre will remain manager for the rest of the year.

The reasoning was that Don Mattingly is next in line, and Steinbrenner wouldn't want him to be in charge of a sinking ship. So Joe will just have to take all the blame.

I agree that Mattingly doesn't take over this year. He's the long-term solution, no way do they let him take over in a huge hole. He'll get a fresh season.

That being said, I'm not 100% sure Torre will last the year. If he goes, I think Bowa takes over as interim manager. He's pretty much the opposite of Joe, and the thinking may be that he can motivate these guys w/ tough love.

I don't think it's a good idea, but I think it is a possibility. Especially if the Yanks fold in the next 4 games.
