Believe it or not, the last time the Sixers faced the Bucks this season was salvageable. If everything had gone according to (heavily-modified) plan, they would've won that game, gone into the All Star break two games behind the #8 seed and come out with Bynum added to their lineup for a run to the playoffs. Things did not work out as planned.

Yes, this is about as big as the final game prior to the All Star break can get for a team who has clearly played over its head through the first 50 games of the season (and playing over its head led to a 22-28 record). Beat Milwaukee, in Milwaukee tonight and the Sixers will go into the break only two games out of the playoffs. Lose, and the deficit grows to four games.

Watching this team can be maddening, at times. Over the past two games, they've played basically 48 minutes of quality, hard-nosed defensive basketball (entire second half + overtime against Toronto, entire second half minus a five-minute stretch vs. San Antonio). Against the bad team, one half was enough. Against the good team, it wasn't. Against Milwaukee tonight, they aren't going to have the legs to make a big comeback.

In a game which they had to lose, if facing the Bulls instead of the Heat in the first round is preferable (Evan Turner thinks it is), the Sixers just couldn't help but win. You can't expect the players to tank, and I suppose leaving three of his best players behind in Pennsylvania and a fourth in street clothes was as far as Doug Collins was willing to go in the tanking direction. Luckily, the Knicks pulled out a win over the Clippers, so it's no harm no foul. (game capsule)

The Sixers will take the floor in Milwaukee tonight without Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young for a game that I honestly don't want them to win. The result is only meaningful if they somehow pass the Knicks over these final two games, but that doesn't mean they should turn this into a Summer League game. There's work to be done.

The Sixers dropped another close game tonight to the Milwaukee Bucks on the back of two tremendous efforts from Brandon Jennings and Drew Gooden. Evan Turner's first start of the season was unspectacular, some familiar problems reared their ugly heads late, but it's never as bad as you think it is after a close loss. (game capsule).

If the trend of the second half continues tonight in Milwaukee, the weary Sixers will take care of the rested Bucks in demonstrative fashion on the road. Last night's game wasn't your average game, though. The Sixers fought tooth and nail against the Bulls and relied on their most important guys for some heavy, intense minutes. Bouncing back is going to be difficult.

The list of things that could've swung this game the other way is very, very long. If Jrue hits even half of the good looks he missed, they win. If Brand connects on one or two more of those elbow jumpers, they win. If Jrue's pass to Thad on the final play of regulation isn't three feet too high, they win. For tonight, take solace in that, chalk this one up as an ugly loss, and move on. When you wake up tomorrow, though, realize they have to rebound from this game quickly, and it's not going to be easy.

What we saw on the floor tonight from the Sixers in no way resembled the basketball we've seen from them this season. If you want to dwell on it as some sort of indicator, that's your prerogative. For me, and more importantly for the team, it's just a blip. It's over, delete it from your memory banks and get ready for the Jazz on Monday night.
