I've kind of written off the whole, "worst team ever" thing where the Nets are concerned this season, mainly because I thought they had some decent pieces and they've just run into some bad luck from the jump this year. After what I saw on the floor last night, though, I'm pretty sure they've earned their record.

Some movies are so bad, they're good. So horrible, you can't help but watch. Drama becomes comedy, comedy becomes tragedy. You get the picture. I'm wondering if tonight's Sixers/Nets game will have that same sort of train wreck atmosphere. I guess at least the Nets have something to play for (avoiding the worst record in the history of the league). Preview and game thread after the jump.

Part of me wishes I could be a fly on the wall in the Sixers team bus right now. Part of me is deathly afraid that I'd have a massive coronary if saw anyone celebrating. This was not a win to be cherished. This was another in what is a growing long line of piss poor performances.

Three wins, two losses. I've been chanting those four words to myself since the game ended to remind myself that the Sixers won a game they should've won tonight. That's a positive. Whenever the loop ends, I'm left with nagging thoughts about a lackluster performance in front of a pitiful crowd. Still, the Sixers came away with a 97-94 win over the depleted New Jersey Nets. Last season, the Sixers finished 41-41, 6th in the Eastern Conference, 2 games behind the Miami Heat for 5th. The difference between a first-round matchup with the Atlanta Hawks or the Orlando Magic was two games. If you're looking to point a finger as to why the Sixers dropped to sixth, look not further than the New Jersey Nets. The Sixers were 0-4 against New Jersey, a split of those four games would've made all the difference in the world. Tonight, it's time to make sure history doesn't repeat itself.

This one was not pretty. From the time I took my seat until the time I left, the Nets dominated this game. Unfortunate for what was a decent preseason run to end on such a low note, but at least the game didn't count. A few notes and observations after the jump.

The Sixers will tip off their final preseason game in about four hours, at St. John's University, against the Nets. Reports earlier this week pegged this as the date for Rodney Carney's return from a hamstring injury, Christmas and Bowman have both been released, meaning this will probably be our first look at the actual roster in game action. As far as I can tell, the game won't be aired anywhere, but fear not. I'll be there in person and I'll have a full report later tonight.

I do have a little bit to say about tonight's pounding at the hands of the New Jersey Nets. It's not going to be about why they lost, I think that's pretty clear. Instead, it's going to be about how the team, and certain people in particular, responded to the situation.

If you're looking for excuses, it won't be hard to find one. The Sixers are coming off an emotional win. Their two best players logged 45 minutes of heavy action yesterday. Thad Young is still out. Samuel Dalembert's calf still seems to be bothering him. Andre Miller's middle finger got dinged up again late in the game. Pick one or two from that list and it could excuse a loss to the Nets today. Unfortunately, there's a battle going on and to be honest, there is absolutely no acceptable excuse in the world for being swept 4-0 by the New Jersey Nets.

That was the view I had of the three refs huddled around the video monitor for 2:30, deciding the Sixers' fate. I put myself through it when I got home, I watched the replay, and they made the right call from the replay, the shot was off in time, just in time. The problem is, there shouldn't have been any time left on the clock.

The Sixers need to make a statement tonight. Think back to January 1st. Since that date, the Sixers have played 23 games and compiled a 14-9 record. Good, but not great. Now consider that in that time they've only lost 2 games to teams with worse records than they have. One of those losses was the now infamous 0-18 disaster against the Nets. Tonight's game is about making two statements: 1) We are a much, much better team than the Nets; 2) The past 23 games have not been a fluke.

It's extremely hard to give away a 17-point lead while playing strong defense, but somehow, it happened tonight. It's nothing short of a tragedy that the Nets walked out of town with an 85-82 win.
