Several things about tonight's overtime loss to the Thunder were pleasant surprises, if not downright shocks. First, Thad was a man. Not just the rebounding, but late in the fourth and also in overtime, he demanded the matchup with Durant. On the final play of regulation, he stifled Durant, wouldn't let him loose to get the ball. A few more positives to take from this loss to follow.

The loss isn't the tough thing to take. If OKC isn't the best team in the league, they're number 2 or 3. On the second night of a back-to-back, against OKC with a boatload of rest. Losing this game is something you can live with. Standing toe-to-toe with the Thunder for 11 rounds, smothering their strength with your strength only to see it all slip away in the 12th round, and not because they hit you with a haymaker, but because you just couldn't finish them off when you had them on the ropes? That's what hurts. The how hurts oh so much. (game capsule).

When the Sixers play host to the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight, for two-and-a-half hours I plan on forgetting all about the previous 35 games, the remaining 30, the race for home-court advantage in the East, the team's long-term cap situation and really anything other than what's happening on the court. Specifically, what's happening with two superb matchups.

It's taken several hours, but I feel like I can finally remove myself from the emotion involved in last night's 110-105 overtime loss enough to find some meaning. What went wrong? What went right? Who (if anyone) is to blame? Let's discuss.

The prevent offense run by the Sixers for the final three minutes of regulation is a perfect way to give a game away. Andre Iguodala was put on Kevin Durant's list and Jrue Holiday was shoved to the side after outplaying Russell Westbrook for three quarters. Tough loss to swallow, all things considered.

30-17 over their last 47. 9-2 over their last 11. 15-5 in their last 20 home games. These streaks are meaningless to a lot of people. Some are starting to catch on, but I think what's missing is a signature win. Why the San Antonio win doesn't count is beyond me, maybe it's just that the Spurs aren't everyone's darling. Enter Kevin Durant and the uber-special OKC Thunder. Tonight is a chance for the Sixers to make a statement on their home floor and send a message people can't ignore.

Outgunned and down their best player, the Sixers went into Oklahoma City tonight prohibitive underdogs. They limped out with their sixth loss in eight games, but the guys who suited up deserve to board their charter flight to Dallas with their heads held high.

How many times have you heard Sixers fans long for our team to be like Oklahoma City? If only we had a guy like Durant. If only we could stockpile high lottery picks, make shrewd cap moves and set ourselves up for the future like they have. If only. Well, year three in OKC's upward progression is off to a slower start than most expected and the Sixers have a chance to make that start even slower tonight.

Yesterday's Pressing Questions thread was dominated by a discussion of the positive vs. negative outlook on the upcoming Sixers season. I was, and remain, in the negative camp, mainly because I don't see how the bigs can compete on the defensive end, nor on the glass. When you look at league-wide results from last season, however, it does seem as though it's possible.

Believe it or not, I thoroughly enjoyed that game. The Sixers didn't mail this one in, the guys on the floor played hard. There was some excitement in the form of a half dozen Iguodala dunks and Elton Brand's excellent play on the blocks. It was a disappointment to see Jrue saddled with foul problems, but overall, a fun game to watch. If a win mattered, it would've maddened me, but all I was really looking for was some entertainment out of the night, and the teams delivered.
