All told, the summer months were a mixed bag. As fans, we had highs (Eddie Jordan's ouster, the draft lottery, Doug Collins and Rod Thorn), and insufferable lows (the Dalembert trade, the preseason). After today, we can put the big picture thinking in the closet for a little while at least and start concentrating on actual basketball. We'll have game threads, stats to devour, x's and o'x to dissect. On the eve of opening night, though, it's time for one last in-depth look at this team.
Latest comment: from GoSixersFor the most part of that game Lebron was the best cavs player on the floor :)...
The West has gotten weaker. At least on paper, it seems that way. Amare and Boozer fled the West, along with a slew of lesser talents. A new championship contender has emerged in the East. The Lakers still have to be the favorites to win it all, but overall, I do believe there will be more parity between the conferences.
Latest comment: from Tom MooreWould say McKie seems to be on course to be a head coach. Snow could be, too, though he's a longer way from that day....
The regular season begins tomorrow night with a battle between the Heat and the Celtics. Much like last season's Finals, I'm left with choosing between teams I loathe to root for, so I'll probably sit this out, emotionally. With the clock ticking down, however, it is time for me to get my predictions on the record. We'll take a look from a difference perspective this season.
I'm a realist: The majority of this preseason has been negative. Yeah, it started out well because we all were thrilled to have a new coach. The way Doug Collins handled the media and more importantly the upgrade he seems to be over Eddie Jordan just from his quotes had many of us excited initially. After a less than stellar preseason, the tide seems to have turned quickly around here. There are many reasons why any 76ers fan could have their doubts after this preseason.

In expected news, the Sixers have exercised their team options on Jrue Holiday (3rd-year option) and Marreese Speights (4th-year option). They also cut ties with both Trent Plaisted and Chris Quinn, trimming the roster to 14. They'll probably go to war with these guys and leave the final roster spot open for flexibility/cheapness, depending on your level of annoyance with the front office.
Admittedly, it's going to be very difficult for anyone with a sporting pulse to pay any kind of attention to tonight's clash of the titans in Cincinnati. The Sixers (1-5) will tip it off against the Cavaliers (fresh off a loss to CSKA Moscow). Some of us may be tempted to watch baseball, fourteen of us will be taking part in the Depressed Fan fantasy basketball draft, but they'll still play the game. Thoughts after the jump.

Call it constant fiddling, call it musical chairs, call it a desperate coach trying any combination he can think of ... whatever you call it, though, Doug Collins can't seem to go more than a week without turning his starting lineup on its head. The latest permutation has Evan Turner and Thad Young headed to the bench with Craig Brackins and Jason Kapono taking their spots on the A team. Thoughts after the jump.
Just after Labor Day, voters here at Depressed Fan were what I would call bullish on the team's prospects. Since then, Doug Collins has changed his lineup 30 times, a couple of guys have gone down with injuries and most of us have seen this team on the floor. It's time for another poll.
For the record, I typically fall in the "pro-Iguodala" camp. I see him as a somewhat underappreciated top 20-35 NBA player whose top 40 salary is reasonable market value. As the team's best player and only 26-years-old, I was against trading away Iguodala last season at the trade deadline - unless they received something of actual value such as a top 5 draft pick. But some things have changed in Sixersland, so it is time to re-address the situation.

The image atop this post makes me feel exactly like tonight's double-overtime loss to the Raptors did: Completely amused, when I know I should be alarmed. Seriously, take a closer look at that photo. Toronto's backup center has the goofiest, fish-in-a-barrel grin on his face. Freebie rebounds don't come against every team, after all. And then look at Elton Brand, "Hmmn, it's either try for the rebound or try to scare him into dropping it." Obviously, Brand chose the latter. More coherent thoughts to follow.
