How many times have you heard Sixers fans long for our team to be like Oklahoma City? If only we had a guy like Durant. If only we could stockpile high lottery picks, make shrewd cap moves and set ourselves up for the future like they have. If only. Well, year three in OKC's upward progression is off to a slower start than most expected and the Sixers have a chance to make that start even slower tonight.

Cleveland shocked the world in their opener. First, the mighty Celtics downed LeBron James and his Miami Heat. Then the LeBron-less Cavs took down the Celtics. Dan Gilbert popped some champagne, Cleveland rejoiced. It was a fairy tale. Since that epic first game of the season, Cleveland has been pretty much what they are, a bad basketball team.

For the second time in five days, the Sixers will take on the Indiana Pacers on the second night of a back-to-back. This time, the odds are stacked even more in the Indiana's favor. The Sixers are coming off a backbreaking overtime loss to the Wizards. Their only interior player of any note, Elton Brand, played 42 hard minutes last night. Meanwhile, Danny Granger put into practice a skill he perfected while playing for Team USA this summer...he sat around and did nothing.

Two winless teams will enter, only one will emerge fully scathed. The Sixers have the rare opportunity of handing two subpar teams a win in their home openers, in consecutive games. The Pacers are a bad team. They're mired in mediocrity, with an over-rated "star" as their centerpiece, a couple of young pieces with some potential and a cast of supporting characters who just don't fit. Some people would say the Sixers are in the same boat. I think the Sixers are in a better situation for the short and long term, but playing the second night of a back-to-back is probably a worse situation for Philly than Indy.

For the second time in three days, the Sixers will take on a team bound for the playoffs. The Atlanta Hawks put on an offensive show against the Grizzlies on Wednesday, dropping 119 points in a 15-point win. This team isn't searching for the offensive identity like the Heat were, they're familiar with each other and they're going to present significant matchup problems.

A team with ten times as many questions as answers will be put to the test immediately by Wade and his sidekicks. Let's break it down.

Believe it or not, I'm mustering some excitement for game 82 of this putrid season which seemed like it would never end. This season of demoralizing losses, head-scratching press conferences and flatlined interest from the fans is ever so slowly grinding to a halt, but it does appear as though Eddie Jordan will not go down without slinging some mud. Personally, I hope he exercises the scintilla of power he has remaining and benches Elton Brand and Sam Dalembert for most of the game again tonight. That should result in a 50-point loss in Miami.

The Sixers have been taking on water all season. They came into the year with expectations that were probably a bit too high, but a there was some hope they could overcome the loss of Andre Miller with the return of Elton Brand and the continued improvement of their young core. Today's 1 p.m. start at the Wach vs. the Raptors is a rarity for out beloved 76ers. I was lucky enough to score a pair of complimentary tickets for this one (so apparently they can give them away), and I'll be taking my kids to their first "professional" basketball game. Take one team, with nothing at all to play for, on the second night of a back-to-back, with injury problems and questionable effort. Make them play on the road against a relatively well-rested, physical, defensive team, coached by Larry Brown fighting for playoff seeding, and well, this just simply isn't going to be pretty.
