The trip is over. The excuses are gone. The Sixers will play 13 of 15 on their home floor now, beginning tonight against the surging Brooklyn Nets. It's time for them to translate effort into wins if they're going to remain in the playoff hunt.

With their maddeningly, disgustingly predictable 2-6 road trip behind them, the Sixers sit five games under .500 heading into what remains of the New Year. An update on Andrew Bynum is supposedly in the works for tomorrow, let's say a Valentine's Day return is the best case scenario. Where could/should/will the Sixers be by then?

With the same energy they displayed in dispatching the Lakers on Tuesday, the Sixers would've cruised to a win in Phoenix last night. But that energy was nowhere to be found. In its place, a team who coasted through long stretches of the game with this false sense of security. This unfounded belief they would be able to turn it on late to pull out a win. They couldn't.

2012 could've been better, could've been worse as a Sixers fan. We had the high of 13 tough playoff games. We had the low of the early summer personnel moves followed by the high of the Bynum trade then the low of the Bynum injury. Looking back, you can't help but wonder what could have been. Looking forward? Well, let's talk about it.

Way back in the beginning of October that the Sixers would play their first 29 games of the season without a single minute from Andrew Bynum, how many wins would you have predicted they'd have by this point? So knowing the roster, knowing how players had performed in the past, knowing the pieces they gave up, pieces they acquired, where would you think they'd be right now? The Memphis Grizzlies and the second or third-best perimeter defender in the league await the Sixers tonight for the second game of the Ice Capades trip. Jason Richardson is out, which leaves Doug Collins with a decision for his starting lineup.

Part one of the "hold on until Bynum hits the floor" strategy is to remain as close to .500 as possible for as long as possible. Part two is to steal as many games as you can from teams you'll be chasing for playoff position. This afternoon's game in Brooklyn is a prime example. The Sixers' first trip to Brooklyn features a game which falls into both categories.

In what is sure to be a sideshow compared to the Bynum news we're expecting to hear today, Lou Williams is coming to town for the first time in a uniform other than the Sixers. The 15-8 Atlanta Hawks haven't missed a beat without Joe Johnson (or his $125M contract), but the Sixers have to be desperate to kill their five-game slide prior to leaving for their Ice Capades trip.

I'm not a hard man to please. Today, I don't care about the Sixers' embarrassing loss to the Rockets last night, I don't care about Turner's twisted ankle or Jrue's soft-tissue foot injury. I don't care the team has less depth than one of these. All I ask is that at some point today, a doctor says, "Andrew Bynum is cleared for basketball activities." Let me head into tomorrow's zombie apocalypse feeling good about something related to the Sixers, I think I've earned it.
