We've spent plenty of time in the comments here debating not only who may be the league's MVP, but also the best way to define the award. Is the MVP simply the best player in the league? Or is he the player who is most valuable to his team? I tend toward the latter. Neil Paine from Basketball-Reference.com thinks differently.

Fresh off an uninspiring win over the hapless Cavs, a date with the 43-16 Dallas Mavericks looming and the team remains focused. Doug Collins has them saying and doing all the right things, they've come together as a unit. A few topics for an open discussion to follow on our (hopefully still) surging Sixers to follow.

The Sixers did everything they could in the first and fourth quarters to insure they wouldn't capture that elusive four-game win streak, but when push came to shove, Thad Young decided to shove. You certainly can't commend them for the game they played, but pulling out the road W was huge and as I write, the Sixers are only a half game out of the #6 seed.

It's been a long time since the Sixers were .500, and a long time coming for this surging team. Getting here wasn't the goal, though, it's just one step. Spend your Saturday relishing the fact that tonight's drubbing of the unraveling Pistons was the Sixers 12th win in their past 16 games. They're officially the hottest team in the league.

Like a bunch of unbathed hippies, the Detroit Pistons have apparently organized a group protest. Five of their veteran players - Ben Wallace, Tracy McGrady, Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox and Tayshaun Prince - all missed the team's shootaround this morning. It's being described as a protest against their head coach. It's unclear whether Keuster has lost his team, Joe Dumars thinks this one could go either way.

What's done is done. Whatever bones you have to pick with the Sixers front office, whatever moves (or lack thereof) you wish they had or hadn't made, they don't matter. Whether Comcast is unbelievably cheap or willing to spend through the nose to put a winner on the floor, that's irrelevant as well. The trade deadline has passed, outside a token pickup, this roster is set. It's time to get behind the guys out on the floor.

It took the Sixers 12 minutes to wake up from their All Star break slumber, then they methodically put the Washington Wizards to bed. The 117-94 final score makes the game look closer than it was. The Sixers absolutely dominated Washington in a demonstrative opener to the final 26 games.

Just when the Sixers string together some solid play and things begin to look up, one team in their division trades for a pseudo star, then another trades for a legit superstar. In the grand scheme of things, the Melo trade is a novelty that probably won't change things in the Atlantic a whole lot. The Deron Williams move, though, could catapult another team ahead of Philly in the East for the next couple of seasons. Luckily, we have a game tonight to distract us from Rod Thorn's inactivity at the helm of the Sixers. Say it with me, "Player Development."

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Nets have a "done deal" with the Utah Jazz to acquire Deron Williams. It's a three-team trade, with Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and picks going to Utah, Troy Murphy going to Golden State and other moving parts.

The first 56 games of the Sixers schedule represented a grueling test for this young squad. 30 games on the road, 20 against the Western Conference, 16 back-to-backs, the Ice Capades trip. To have survived at only two games below .500 is an accomplishment, all things considered. Now it's time to sprint to the finish. Forget surviving, now it's time to thrive, to feast on a much easier schedule over the final 26 games.
