Several things about tonight's overtime loss to the Thunder were pleasant surprises, if not downright shocks. First, Thad was a man. Not just the rebounding, but late in the fourth and also in overtime, he demanded the matchup with Durant. On the final play of regulation, he stifled Durant, wouldn't let him loose to get the ball. A few more positives to take from this loss to follow.

If my reading of the tea leaves is incorrect (and it probably is), and the more optimistic members of the fan base are correct, the Sixers have a plan. They're laying the groundwork for a slow rebuild, or a delayed rebuild. They're clearing their books for two years from now. I say if that's the plan, then do it right.

Another backbreaking, gut-wrenching loss to an elite team. Losses like this are so unbelievably tough to take because they tease you. They tell you the Sixers are so close to being on Chicago's level, a Chicago team that really wanted this game (wanted it so badly that Derrick Rose played the entire first, third and fourth quarters and only sat six minutes all night), and they nearly couldn't have it. So close. But when all is said and done, it's just another loss. (game capsule).

It's good to know the stretch of seven games against top-notch opponents didn't make the Sixers forget how to treat a bad team. Last night, the Sixers manhandled the Cavs and put another lopsided win on the board. (game capsule).

The Sixers manhandled the #2 offense in the league tonight. They held them to 78 points. They made Blake Griffin use 19 shots to score 16 points. They held Chris Paul to 4 assists. They did all of that, and absolutely, positively pissed the game away on the offensive end. (game capsule).

36 minutes just doesn't cut it when you're playing a team like the Heat. The Sixers matched them step-for-step through three quarters. Answered every run, threw in a couple of their own, beat them at their own game, but when the Heat put their foot on the gas in the fourth, the Sixers just had nothing left in the tank. The latest in a string of demonstrative wins came over Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls tonight at the Wells Fargo Center, 98-82. Here's the thing about this win that should have people taking notice. The Sixers played the exact same game they've been playing all year. They used the exact same formula they've been using to kill bad teams to absolutely demoralize the Chicago Bulls. Derek Rose had no clue what to do against the Sixers defense in the third quarter. For all intents and purposes, the Bulls looked about as effective against this Sixers defense as the Wizards. (game capsule, by the way, check after the jump for the rest of the posterization above)

Way back in May, before the owners and union crushed our souls, it was apparent the Sixers biggest decision this offseason would be what to do with Thad Young. Thad is a restricted free agent, he was a big part of the team's improvement/success last season, he was the team's fastball off the bench, their scoring punch, their instant mismatch. He did basically everything that was asked of him and Doug Collins seemed to fall in love. Now it's time to put emotion aside, assess the new reality of the NBA and figure out what this guy is worth

Last summer the fear was that Thad Young would show sudden improvement in his walk year. Improvement to the point where the Sixers would feel obligated to sign him to a lucrative extension or watch him walk away in restricted free agency. It was a fear because it's hard to trust a sudden bump in production in the year prior to free agency immediately following a couple of lackluster seasons with very little growth. Let's see if that fear came true.

Taking game one in Miami would've been unbelievable. Ideal, even. It didn't happen, but perhaps something more important did. No one knew if the Sixers who went on that tremendous run could suddenly reappear for the playoffs. Well, they did, in a big way.
