Since the argument over Andre Iguodala's worth vs. his salary seems to never end (and yes, I realize I'm more guilty than anyone), I realized there was some flawed logic to
the post I wrote last month. Explanation and a monster list after the jump.
When I wrote that post, I compared Iguodala to the best performers in the league, based on win shares. Then I listed the salaries of the players on the list to see how Iguodala's deal measured up. The flaw in the logic was that we were only looking at the contracts handed out that actually paid off. That's an incomplete picture. We're leaving out all the players who are grossly overpaid, and I think they should be involved in the conversation as well.
So here's your comprehensive list. All the players in the NBA, ranked by their 2009-2010 salary. Sixers are in bold, players in parenthesis have been waived or bought out of their current contracts, the number next to them is the amount of salary counting against the cap for the team that cut/bought them out. Salary figures drawn from

I'd never seen the salaries listed out this way, and I'm sure there are several GMs who wish no one had ever seen it. Thoughts in the comments.
Willie Green makes more money than 273 NBA players.
That seems wrong
Michael Redd #10.
The Sixers have 3 of the top 50 salaries, and they're 10-23. Ugh.
Sure, and McGrady is #3 but at one point those guys sort of accomplished something in the NBA - Willie Green still makes more than half the league...that's nuts.
I'll risk stating the obvious...Brand will be ascending that list pretty rapidly with the raises he will be getting. Would be fine if the cap and tax were not going down.
What percentage of guys on the list don't have escalating salaries?
1.7324689376356%
approximately
Offset by players whose contracts will expire.
Offset again by players who are coming off their rookie contracts and reaching free agency.
But those players won't have starting salaries > Brand's that year, because max is based on experience.
Brand is very likely to climb those rankings.
Oh, he'll definitely climb in the rankings. I'm just hoping he doesn't turn into the Jermaine O'Neal of this list in three years.
Odds that Arenas is the TMac of the list (assuming he isn't in the Big House and his contract isn't nullified).
I looked at every salary up to Iguodala's.
Most of the salaries are epiring by next the end of next year. With the tax going down only a few players will be able to demand salaries anywhere near the PhillyMax after next season.
So it will look really ugly in 2 years when Iguodala/Brand will combine for 30M and 33M in successive season. They will be easier to deal at that point, but forget about adding other big name players to the team for the next 4 years if Iguodala and Brand remain on the roster.
Kobe Bryant $23,034,375... expires in 1 year. Top 5 NBA player
Jermaine O'Neal $23,016,000... Expires. Will make much less
Tracy McGrady $22,483,124... Expires. Will make much less
Tim Duncan $22,183,220... expires in 2 years. Top 10 NBA player
Shaquille O'Neal $21,000,000... Expires. Will make much less

Ray Allen $18,776,860...expires
Rashard Lewis $18,010,791... horrible contract but top 2 player on contender
Michael Redd $17,040,000... expires in 1 year. Was a Brand like contract

Elton Brand $14,858,472... grows 1-2M each year for 3 more years
Richard Jefferson $14,200,000...expires in 1 year.

Predrag Stojakovic $13,392,000...expires in 1 year.
Jason Richardson $13,333,332...expires in 1 year.
Steve Nash $13,125,000... 2 more years of declining salary (drops down to 10M so will make 6M less than Brand that year.
Tony Parker $12,600,000...expires in 1 year
Andrew Bynum $12,500,000... Brand like contract, age 22
Carlos Boozer $12,323,900... expiring. Debatable how much he will make next year
Brad Miller $12,250,000... expiring
Andre Iguodala $12,200,000... 4 more years with 1-2M raise each year.
So really the only to 38 contracts that extend beyond next season are:
Brand, Iguodala
Lewis, Gasol, Arenas, Bynum.
2 Lakers, 2 Magic, 2 Sixers, 1 Bullet (may be voided.)
What is wrong with this picture?
All of the other future big contracts will have to be awarded in the next 2 years, when big money likely will not be thrown around for complementary players.
Roy and Aldridge will both be in there. Did anyone else get early extensions from that draft class?
Yeah, some of the the lower guys will get up to Iguodala range (Aldridge has almost the same deal as Iguodala.) They won't get near Brand's range. For example, Josh Smith will get 13M the year Brand gets 18M and Igudoala gets 15M.
My main point is that most of the horrible contacts of old will be gone in 2 years. The really bad deals remaining were all signed the same summer as Igudala and Brand (Arenas, Baron, Bogut, Okafor...) So its not like E.S. was unique in his bad judgement or bad luck... but we are the only team stuck with two of those bad deals.
There will be a new CBA and it remains to be seen if any teams will spend beyond the huge names with the tax going down.
Yep, so dumping Brand is imperative
Dalembert isn't stealing as much money as I once thought. $23mil for Jermaine O'Neal? Wow.
Cost versus performance, I don't think Elton was worth that much even in his prime.
Check out the BK specials on this list:
Dalembert
Kenny Thomas
Greg Buckner (I believe)
Willie Green
Ugh. It seems the 76ers have eternally had at least 1-2 'bad contracts' since Billy King became GM.
People complain about Willie Green but what about a guy like Kapono? He is in the 84th percentile by salary for a guy who essentially is a one-trick pony.
What always amazes me is all of the rumors of how many of the NBA players will supposedly have difficulty paying their bills if their is a lockout for a year. Making money that rivals Fortune 1000 CEOs and well-paid financial industry people and still can't pay their bills.
Not even close to what fortune 1000 CEO's make - and FORTUNE 1000 CEO's have a lot less 'mouths' to feed out of their pay check...I'm not saying they make a pittance, but they tend to have a lot more hnagers on, with less experience and guidance on what to do with the money (one place where the NBA PLayers union fails miserably)...
The NFL Players union kills the NBA in that regard.
NFL Players union kills most unions in most regards (except in treatment of retired players, but all leagues are god awful at that really) - though this negotiation might be really interesting now that it's new leaders on both sides (and owner against owner as well)
I need to join a wealthy CEO's posse.
so we won't be able to sign a big name player as long as we have iguodala and brand? suddenly that deal with the cavs Brian talked about doesn't sound so bad at all
The Sixers would only have a large amount of cap space in 2011 if they don't resign Young. And its unlikely the would make a trade for a star while still having Iguodala and Brands big contracts pushing them over the tax. They'd probably only be willing to go over the tax if they were a sure fire contender.
Have to point out that Elton has been playing exactly how we hoped over the last 20 games. IF he stays healthy and continues this performance is he worth the contract? Of course our coach has to continue to play him 32-35 minutes a game.
He's worth maybe 9-10M a year assuming he is playing at his current best. He will be making 14,15,16,18M
His current best is probably better than 20/10/2 blocks per 36 minutes. His season numbers are up to 16/8/1.6 including his slow start, he's almost at 50% shooting.
I think 9-10M is way low considering the production he's giving. Just imagine if he was getting starter's minutes for a real coach.
what is a brand like contract?
I’m still waiting for some interesting thoughts from your side in your next post thanks
