NBA Lockout Update: Feeling Any Pain Yet?

bentleyforsale101711.gif
Now that two weeks of the season have officially been flushed down the dumper and all games in this calendar year are probably in jeopardy pending tomorrow's meeting, players are nearing the point where this lockout will cause them some actual pain (meaning, the point where the escrow checks the owners were forced to cut will be outpaced by lost wages). Let's take a look at how much money the Sixers have lost to this point, and how much they'll lose if/when all 2011 games are cancelled.

To calculate the lost earnings, I basically took the season as 25 weeks, divided the players' salaries by 25 to get their weekly pay, and then multiplied by the number of lost weeks. Some players are payed on a yearly schedule, some players have deferred payments, but this is the best measure I could come up with. Vucevic hasn't signed a contract yet, so we're going with the money he's slotted to make in his draft spot. Thad and Hawes have both been tendered qualifying offers, so we went with those numbers, though they could sign for much more (and lose much more money).

Two weeks gone

  • Elton Brand: $1.34M
  • Andre Iguodala: $1.08M
  • Andres Nocioni: $532K
  • Louis Williams: $414K
  • Evan Turner: $395K
  • Marreese Speights: $217K
  • Jrue Holiday: $139K
  • Craig Brackins: $112K
  • Jodie Meeks: $70K
  • Spencer Hawes: $324K
  • Thad Young: $319K
  • Nikola Vucevic: $113K

And if no deal is struck tomorrow:

See you in January (maybe)

  • Elton Brand: $6.14M
  • Andre Iguodala: $4.87M
  • Andres Nocioni: $2.39M
  • Louis Williams: $1.86M
  • Evan Turner: $1.78M
  • Marreese Speights: $979K
  • Jrue Holiday: $627K
  • Craig Brackins: $505K
  • Jodie Meeks: $318K
  • Spencer Hawes: $1.46M
  • Thad Young: $1.44M
  • Nikola Vucevic: $509K

Obviously, a few guys have offset their losses by signing overseas, and some of these guys have outside businesses (Brand and his movies, for example), but you have to think if/when your run-of-the-mill minimum salary guy starts to see numbers like this in the lost wages column, they'll start to make some noise in the union meetings (if they haven't already).
