We've spent some time discussing advanced statistics around here over the past three years, some may think too much time, some not enough. Whether you buy into the value of these advanced metrics or not, understanding them certainly won't hurt you. With that in mind, I thought we'd spend today taking a closer look at the basic stats available to all of us every day, and I'll tell you how I try to add some perspective to the rows and columns of numbers printed in every newspaper worth its salt.

A year ago yesterday, we took a look at what the Sixers would be missing in the absence of Andre Miller, and how they could make up for that production. Today, let's see how that worked out.

No games have been played, training camp hasn't even begun. Since he was hired, we've heard some smart things from Doug Collins, we've seen a trade that you'd think he at least had to OK. We've heard the rough outline of some of his plans. Obviously, the proof is in the pudding, but I want to know how you guys feel right now. I hope everyone was paying attention to Andre Iguodala's play in the Team USA scrimmage on Saturday night. If you missed it, Iguodala scored 17 points on 6 shots. He picked his spots and facilitated on the offensive end, locked down on defense. Here's the fun thing, this type of play isn't a surprise from Iguodala, it's who he is.

ESPN2 will air the Team USA scrimmage tonight at 10 pm, so if you're dying for hoops, Iguodala will be on the court. I'll be watching, check in here if you are too.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm quite down on the Sixers front office these days. In fact, this is probably the lowest I've been on them in the past decade.

Ed Stefanski has another feather for his cap. His eternal quest to fill the Sixers' front court with players who can neither rebound, nor block shots just keeps on rolling. The latest addition, according to Tom Moore in the comments, is Tony Battie.

Marc Stein threw a bone to Sixers fans everywhere yesterday in his column. He mentioned the Sixers would be open to trading Kapono, which isn't really a shock. I scoured the Internet tonight to see if there was some kind of buzz and guess what? I found someone who wants him. Granted, it's a Kings blogger, but still. Someone does want him.

It's a statement made by many NBA fans and heard often on this blog: "You can't win in the NBA without superstars." The follow-up statement is often attached: "I'm only going to be happy/excited about my team if they have a chance to win." For many 76ers fans, several woeful statements then follow logically: (1) the 76ers don't currently have any superstars; (2) it is unlikely they will ever attract a superstar through free agency or trade; (3) the only reasonable course of action is to be a terrible team year after year and hope to land that superstar through the lottery. This line of reasoning is even more depressing with the realization that your team can win the lottery and still not land a superstar, as many are starting to fear with the Sixers and Evan Turner in 2010. But is the whole mindset of "superstar or bust" a reasonable one? Because there's a thorny problem to think about: while having a superstar is a necessary condition for winning in the NBA ("a team can't win unless it has a superstar") it is not a sufficient condition ("If a team has a superstar, it will win"). I'm still sitting around waiting for Ed Stefanski to make a meaningful trade which actually makes the Sixers better on the court. It hasn't happened yet in his tenure as the team's general manager. Last night, I decided to take a look around the league and see if I could find something simple in the hopes that someone might be able to somehow get word to the big man.
