CSN is reporting the Sixers checked in with the Knicks on Amare Stoudemire's availability. It was described as nothing more than "due diligence" but let's break it down anyway.
First, let me state, unequivocally that I don't want any part of Amare. I don't care how much or how little the Sixers would need to give up for him, I don't think he's the piece this team needs and there's absolutely no way I'd take on the remainder of his contract, especially since it's not insured.
Now, if you can put all of that stuff aside (which you shouldn't be able to), I can't help but imagine what it would be like for this team to get a big man who can run the floor and finish on the inside. Jrue, Turner, Iguodala and Lou can all run the pick and roll and hurt teams in multiple ways. The missing ingredient has pretty much always been a big who can catch and finish on the roll, and not just the pop like Brand and Hawes (sometimes). Amare, at least prior to this season, was the embodiment of a perfect roll big for these guys to play with.
Amare's added offense would probably more than make up for his lackluster defense, there's just way too much risk involved in trading for him. It's also hard to put together a deal the Knicks would find palatable which didn't involve Iguodala, or Jrue. Here's one variation. I'd have to think the Knicks would only move Amare if the deal would either give them another star or near star to help them right away, or clear enough cap space for them to sign Deron Williams this summer. Nothing else makes a whole lot of sense, they aren't going to tear it all down 20 games into this new era of Knicks basketball.
Anyway, it's not going to happen. It shouldn't happen. I'm just a sucker for any rumor that gets a big who can finish to Philly, only not this particular big.
